I'm from Austin.  Our city leadership is notoriously oblivious, and has been for decades, so its no surprise they waited this long.  Locals are worried that people will come anyways, as some events are still happening at the encouragement of local businesses.

 

Two days ago the mayor was saying that SXSW wouldn't put the public at any greater risk.  :shock:

Yeah SXSW is usually bigger than the event itself. I mean that when they are having parties and concerts that the rest of the town are throwing corporate parties for the interactive crowd and the music section has local places all over playing bands. Tons of Live music that week. Bands just want to say they played during SXSW in Austin. As someone that lives here. I don't mind them  closing it huge traffic headache. I normally avoid it.
