A company that made a rifle used in one of the US's deadliest school shootings has settled with the families of victims for $73m (£53.9m).

The settlement from Remington Arms comes in response to a lawsuit brought by the families of nine of 26 victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre.

The case marks the first time a gun-maker has faced liability for a mass shooting.

Until now, the industry has been enjoyed immunity from litigation.

Each family will receive a share of the settlement, but other details of the deal were not disclosed.

The duke will pay an undisclosed financial sum to Virginia Giuffre as part of the out-of-court settlement.

Prince Andrew has settled a civil sexual assault case brought against him in the US by Virginia Giuffre.

Ms Giuffre had been suing the Duke of York, claiming he sexually assaulted her on three occasions when she was 17, allegations he has repeatedly denied.

A letter filed to the US district court on Tuesday said the duke and Ms Giuffre had reached an out-of-court settlement.

It said the duke would pay an undisclosed sum to Ms Giuffre.

His representatives said he had no comment beyond what was said in the document filed to the court. Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the settlement.

  • Commissar SFLUFAN changed the title to Lawsuit Settlement Day in the USA: Remington settles with Sandy Hook families for $73 million, Prince Andrew settles with Virginia Giuffre for [undisclosed amount]

The interesting thing about the Remington/Sandy Hook case is that they took a route more like the Tobacco lawsuits of yesteryear and targeted the way Remington advertised their products, specifically how they have paid lots of money in the last decade to have their firearms included in video games. The guns themselves were hardly even an issue.

Will be interesting to see if others jump on this train because the gun industry is overflowing with horrendous marketing of this sort. Bet a lot of companies are mad that Remington didn’t continue fighting it and chose to settle pre-trial.
