Sure, but nobody can say the shooting mechanics in this game is bad. It just isn’t.

if you’re playing on consoles, then definitely, the framerates would make it suck. But on PC, frankly, the shooting is some of the best non-twitch shooting out there.

I said it was sub-par. Which was probably still the wrong word to use. The game, at least early on, does nothing to stand out from the hordes of FPS games that are out there.

While perhaps not in the same genre there are a good chunk of games that take the FPS genre to interesting heights, this game isn’t one of them.

I've been trying to find a game with deep action mechanics but nothing so far is scratching that itch.  I'm thinking hand-to-hand combat instead of shooting.  I've tried a couple of Souls games and they do not do it for me.  I do really like character action games, and am working through Metal Gear Rising, which is great if somewhat shallow.  I've already really enjoyed stuff like Bayonetta, God of War, Astral Chain (and most other stuff by Platinum Games), etc.  What else should I hunt down and play, and do you have favorites in this genre?  I'm wondering if I might need to get into fighting games, but they've never really appealed to me since I mostly play single-player stuff.

If you like Platinum what about Nier Automata?

For hand to hand combat I might suggest Absolver or Aragami.

Can't really recommend it, but Dead Island maybe?

Other random games: Shadow or Mordor series, Mirrors Edge series, Darksider series, Dragonball Xenoverse, Quantum Break, Ryse: Son of Rome

I see. Might take time then? I mean, it's definitely not Doom Eternal levels and probably not as good Destiny on the fundamentals (although I do think the combat as a whole is more interesting than Destiny's combat on the whole), but I've been enjoying the combat a lot. Incidentally I mostly use mantis blades which when coupled with double jump and perks to speed you up so so much damn fun. But I also found myself really enjoying the Overwatch iconic sniper rifle on the opposite extreme and some of the revolvers :p

FWIW, the game absolutely takes a some time past the intro where the quests really open up and are really good.

How far are you? I think most of act 1 isn't super compelling narratively, but once you get into the meat of the game with Keanu Reeves things get a lot more interesting. That said, while I've liked a lot of what's going on in the story, I haven't had a "bloody baron" moment yet.

Also the gunplay is great relative to the genre.

Its good to hear that it opens up a bit. I'm really not far at all, I don't even know what the last "main" quest I did was. I just kind of pick up different quests as I go and roll with it.

:/ Are you playing on console? I find the gunplay surprisingly good for an RPG and a million times better than the ME1 gunplay, but I've heard that much like other things on the console version, the controls are hot garbage for aiming. I think I also heard that they can be tweaked in the options to be better though?

Beyond that though, I *do* think the combat continues to get better as you unlock perks for V.

    Nah I'm on PC.

I don't literally mean as bad as ME1, just that it parallels to the same situation. Where its just a sub par experience compared to what else is out there. I guess its not really fair to compare it to like an Arena shooter or something. It would probably be best to compare it to something like Fallout maybe? Destiny to me has some of the best gun play in a video game period and Cyberpunk isn't even the same ballpark. Even like the running animation has this just weird jank off-step to it.

I'm just waiting for something to hook me. I hated Witcher 3 until I got to the bloody baron quest line (even though its only like an hour in), but I still wasn't huge on the combat after that. The story carried me into wanting to play more. 2077 just doesn't have anything yet, I keep chugging through in 30-1h sessions and just can't get into the groove.

For those playing Cyberpunk, immediately go to the settings and widen your field of view as much as possible (cranked mine to 100) and turn off film grain, chromatic aberration, depth of field, lens flare, and motion blur (they all start turned on by default).

Good Christ it helped the game's look on my eyes immensely. It's like how Mass Effect 1 started with the 80's film grain effect turned on initially by default when it first released and you were like: "I get why it's in here, but on default?" It'd be like starting up Ghost of Tsushima with Kurosawa mode on by default. Really helps Cyberpunk I think.

Honestly this game reminds me a lot of Mass Effect 1 in a couple ways. One is its graphical options like with the grain, but the other is that the gun play is just not fun.

Maybe its that I'm not far enough or not spec'ing into the right abilities, but 3 hours and I'm wondering if this will be like Mass Effect where the gun play is just never going to be good. I just have to appreciate the story that hasn't really evolved into anything yet?

yes and no. You may be behind in the story, but there is an induction mission for new players that should make it better getting into the game. You may need a YouTube video or two to get caught up narratively. But the minimum power, the starting power I should say is 1050 now. You don’t have to climb from 0-1200+

Its also stupid easy to get to 1200. Do the story, run a couple strikes, run a lost sector over and over, or just play crucible.

  7. When I was younger and had a much more limited amount of games to play I found myself replaying games often.

Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy 7 and 9, Pokemon, Morrowind, Diablo, etc.

As I've gotten older and have access to way more games its harder to go back and play them. I'll seldom go back and play favorites, but it does happen from time to time. I just recently played Dead Space and have noticed I usually do it when I'm waiting for something to come out or just have an itch for those games.

There are some really hair-raising areas in DS2, that's for sure. And goddamn is pinning enemies against the wall with random environmental shit cool.

If you've never played FEAR I highly recommend it just for the Penetrator. Same concept, a lot more enemies to slam into the wall.

I bought all three Dead Space games in a recent sale having never played them before, and I'm surprised at how well they hold up.  I am nearing the end of the first game, and while the environments are sort of bland and repetitive, the visuals and the gameplay are really excellent.  I don't know if these are enhanced on the Xbox One X, but even on the One S there is a noticeable increase in the visuals over the 360.  What's the consensus with these?  I understand 2 is maybe the best, and 3 is not as well liked.

Having finished up the first game about a week ago I agree. I really think the first game could use a good mod or "remaster". Its textures are really dated.

I think DS2 is the best one overall. It's not as Survival Horror as the first one but I think it nails a good balance between Action and Horror and the gameplay improvements are worth the sacrifice in overall mood to me. I never played DS3.

What I will say is that I noticed just how repetitive and somewhat, and I hate to use the word, lazy the encounters get. DS2 especially gets into that big set piece, quiet walking around, big set piece, quiet walking around rut. Usually the action set pieces involve being locked into an arena with two or three waves of seemingly random enemy types. It's still really fun more often then not but yeah, it really stuck out because I had played Resident Evil 4 shortly before replayed DS1 and DS2.

I'd still have to give it to DS1. It just really nails the presentation and atmosphere. Isolated, persistent fog around the ship/lack of sight, sound cues, etc. It can get a little predictable with enemies later on, but I don't think its really a huge deal breaker.  I like the fact that DS2 goes into Isaac's psyche, dementia, and hallucinations, but I just don't think Titan Station is anywhere near as good as the Ishimura. The areas are more varied, but it loses its claustrophobia often and is rarely scary.

I guess another issue (if you can call it that) is that the Plasma cutter is probably the best gun in DS1. The only reason I even took the Pulse Rifle with me is for situations when I didn't have time to reload or I would run low on ammo. DS2 has some outright OP weapons though. Force Gun and Contact Beam together can obliterate pretty much any situation. If I had to recommend anything in DS2 its that you don't touch any of the DLC weapons until you unlock them in game.

I love the entire trilogy. Each game is uniquely horror, each in a very different way. The co-op in the third was boss. Definitely recommend people should play them all, just know it all ends on an enormous cliffhanger that will never be resolved.

I honestly think Dead Space 3 is underrated. If you ignore all the EA advertising bits, the game truly is pretty epic. If you play co-op, the way you get the dynamic between the two characters is very involving. And there's still plenty of horror. And you travel space a lot, which feels so cool in Dead Space. It's still a Visceral game, which means it's incredibly well made.

Hell, even the Dead Space: Extraction on rails game was awesome, and involved a very interesting subplot in the overall Dead Space mythos that continues with Dead Space 2 DLC. That storyline too, unfortunately, ends on a massive cliffhanger that will never be resolved.

    *sigh*

Its been awhile since I've played DS3, but it brings a lot of the same issues I have with 2, but even more. Gameplay in general feels more actiony and while it has some really beautiful set pieces, they rarely evoke a feeling of horror. The maps feel even larger is scope than 2. Does it have scary moments, sure. If I had to rank the genres by what is most prevalent it would be something like DS1 is a horror sci-fi shooter, DS2 is a sci-fi horror shooter, and DS3 is a Sci-fi shooter with some horror. I don't hate DS3, it just distanced itself further from what I enjoyed about the series than I would have liked.

I don't remember much about reading Martyr, but I do remember enjoying it. Have you read any of the books and are they worth reading?

  10. Dead Space. I wanted to play something spoopy and I've never actually beaten Dead Space. My friend and I would always play games simultaneously as he would come over to my house and we swap between the PC/Xbox. He ended up beating before I did and I watched him, so I never went and finished it. This happened with a lot of games I should go re-finish like Red Dead

Nope. I've never used WASD. I use the numpad for movement. Although for sprints/dodges in games, I always use the thumb button(s) on my mouse. Having them on a key instead of a mouse button feels slower and clunky.

That seems so weird to me, but I guess it makes sense. I know a lot of people move to ESDF or RDFG so that they have more keys available to them.

I've noticed that pushing mouse buttons moves my cursor ever so slightly so I avoid using them for buttons I would need to use while ADSing or something like that.

Although that might just be a me thing.

  12. God of War - I've started and stopped this so many times

Jedi Fallen Order - Played a couple hours at most

Kingdom Hearts 3 - I'm super close to the end. The series just doesn't hold the same charm it use to as a kid/teen.

Shadow of the Colossus - I'm near halfway

FFXV - Once I heard there was going to be a ton of story DLC after I immediately put the game down. Its been on the backburner ever since.

Witcher 3 - Just too big to handle.

    Alien Isolation

That's all I can think of off the top of my head

Yeah if you just hit those few buttons your damage is going to be pitiful.

Yes, your "basic" rotation is that, but there's so much more to do than just hit those abilities in a cycle over and over again.

Although it is significantly pared back from the meme it used to be where you had to cycle through like 60 abilities (not 60 different abilities, but quite a few of them) in a specific order with super precise timing, including positionals, or you'd lose out on tons of damage and would have to start over from the beginning.

    Cool.

The argument wasn't which has more depth. I was saying the FFXIV isn't doing anything drastically different than WoW. You have a few more buttons to push and WoW doesn't boil down push buttons until big attack is ready.

  14. 13 hours ago, Bacon said:

Well, Outlaw/Ass Rogue, Fury Warrior, BM Hunter, and, Frost DK, are all pretty basic. Frost Mage and Destro Warlock aren't much better. And yeah, your rotation can change, but it is pretty simple change. You call Demon Hunter brain dead, but I don't consider the specs I listed to be any less brain dead. Especially Fury and Rogue. All of this is said with PvE in mind. Like, I barely get a full hotbar of consistently useful abilities.

And the only reason Demon Hunter looks so empty is because it doesn't have like any extra class buttons and I don't have any non-spell books things on the bars. Except for the ability on 5.

FFXIV has me using much more of my hotbar.

Your rotation changes in WoW, but you aren't really doing much more stuff. I know Enh Shaman had a bit more going on when I was using the Natural Harmony traits. I haven't really played the other specs of Warlock or Mage. I leveled those classes up but I hate caster classes. Never played a Druid, and I can't remember shit about Ret despite getting that to 120 as well. Never leveled a (shadow)priest either. Well, not past 44 anyway. I mean, of course there is more depth to it than pressing the same button 5 times in a row and then pressing your big dam button, but not a lot and not in the majority of the PvE content. It isn't PvP or Raids, WoW classes feel very samey, or I hear people talk about how all of the classes have been homogenized. Even then, with the Class/Spec combos I play, it is all very simple. With how my WoW keybinds are set up there is almost no difference when I switch character/classes.

Frost DK's have been openly mocked for how simple it is since WotLK. Though for the most part Unholy has output more DPS in most expansions. I haven't played Hunter since Vanilla - WotLK, Never gotten past just leveling a Warrior/Rogue so I can't say much about them.

Havoc Demon Hunter has one rotation, regardless of situation this is it. It has a total of 7 buttons.

Immolation Aura > Fel Rush > Eye Beam > Death Sweep > Metamorphosis > Death Sweep > Eye Beam > Metamorphosis > Immolation Aura > Eye Beam > Chaos Strike/Annihilation > Demon's Bite

Frost Mage has 2 basic rotations, one for multi-target and one for single target. Together it still only totals about 12 abilities, but everything depends on whats proc'd, what debuff is on the target(s) and how you choose to use your cooldowns. It massively affects how much DPS you're doing.

I'll admit I haven't played end game FFXIV or even really gotten that far, I think I'm level 40 on a DPS class and 20 on a healer.

But Dragoon is what I wanted to play so I went searching for its rotation and for the most part its

True Thrust > Disembowel > Chaos Thrust > Wheeling Thrust > Fang and Claw > True Thrust (Raiden) > Vorpal Thrust > Full Thrust > Fang and Claw > Wheeling Thrust.

That doesn't seem massively different than whats going on in WoW.

  15. 21 hours ago, Bacon said:

Something I have wanted to talk about since I beating the Heavensward portion of FFXIV is MMO combat and Xenoblade. I kinda crap on MMO gameplay because it usually isn't fun, but with how encounters are designed in FFXIV I have really been just enjoying the combat, especially with kinda being able to just play another class whenever you want. That and I usually think of WoW when I think of MMO combat. And while they are similar, FFXIV and WoW are different in ways that matter. WoW has this system where you are usually using the same ability over and over again until you gain enough of your resource and then you press a button to spend it all in one single big hit. FFXIV isn't really like that. At this point, every class/job has its own resource or builders and spenders but it isn't the same. You aren't just pressing one button but a series of buttons thanks to the combo system. And while it could be said that you are just pressing more buttons to get the same result, it really isn't like that and I can't really explain it better.

I mean yes, but no. Sure some of the brain dead classes like Havoc Demon Hunter are just a basic rotation in every situation, but when you get into some of the more complicated classes it very much becomes situational and you're rotation can change constantly given the dungeon/raid.

I honestly didn't feel FFXIV was anything to write home about combat wise. Tera is something I wish had gotten more attention or at least its combat because that game was downright fun to play. I actually felt like my character was doing something other than stand in one place and push buttons.
