I still remember a bonkers argument I had on this board probably almost a decade ago now.

It was some bill or another that got passed with a bipartisan vote. And one of the conservatives that still posted here at the time insisted without shame or doubt or self awareness that the conservatives who went out of their way to keep X out of the bill now deserved a huge amount of credit for getting X done. It was like arguing with a funhouse mirror as he totally believed that something Dems were responsible for, and which they had to give concessions to get....was now something Republicans could take credit for because they ultimately voted for the bill.

I always remember this argument in moments like this because Dems need to be aware that if they vote to support ANY Republican for Speaker they now own everything that Speaker does. For instance, as far as right wing talking points going forward they will have essentially endorsed the impeachment of Joe Biden....

I understand there might be political calculus to eventually supporting someone in some scenario, but they damn well better make sure it's worth it because Republicans will bludgeon them with every horrible thing they do from now until Nov. '24.

Okay, I have a legit question for those who say Netflix isn't worth it..... HOW?!

Yes, Netflix puts out a lot of shit, and a lot of it is shit, but just in the last few months - British Bake Off, Castlevania, The Fall of the House of Usher, Our Planet, Nimona, One Piece, They Cloned Tyrone, they just recently got a bunch of HBO content... I'm probably forgetting a lot of things right now.

With services like Max or Disney+, there might be 1 thing running at a time that I want to watch. Sometimes nothing. With Netflix, there's ALWAYS something.  How in the titty fucking christ could you possibly say Netflix doesn't have enough content for you, but Max or Disney+ do? Yeah, 75% of Netflix's content is shit, but they only need 25% of it to be good for it to still far outpace anything anyone else does.

There are a lot of reasons to dislike how Netflix runs things, but if anyone ever says "Netflix doesn't have enough quality content," I want some of what you're smoking because you're fucking high as gas.

I care much more about existing content rather than sampling new stuff. Particularly TV shows.

Netflix is by far the worst when it comes to offering classic content.

I have 5 services and Netflix ain't one of them. Haven't had it for a year or two and haven't missed it in the least. I'll get a month or two once Stranger Things and Cobrai Kai's final seasons go up next year.

    From Politico's Olivia Beavers:

I wonder if there is some vicarious living going on with this one.

Jordan and Hannity thought they could play Trump style bully ball on this(and maybe they could have if the margin wasn't so tight) but they got the opposite reaction. As in some Reps reacted like, "I may have had to kowtow to that orange bastard for years, but I'll be damned if I am going to be the bitch for some nobody from nowhere Ohio.....".

  4. Just finished the show.

Archer is kind of unique in that the show's quality didn't really go down. All the moving parts could be as sharp as ever during a scene.

The problem is after 14 seasons and 150ish episodes you can only see "team goes on a mission that devolves into chaos" so many times.

That's why, despite some misses, I think the experimental seasons were a good thing overall. At least they tried some different stuff.

  5. Well that was unexpected.

Just days after the finale aired they have announced a 3 part special to air in December.  It will act as a new three part finale called Archer: Into the Cold.

Considering that the regular seasons have only been about 8 episodes each for years now, a 3 episode special out of no where seems like a pretty substantial surprise.....

    Quote

Archer‘s globetrotting adventures aren’t done after all: FXX has ordered a new three-part finale for the animated spy comedy, just two days after what was billed as its series finale. The new finale, titled Archer: Into the Cold, will air Sunday, Dec. 17 at 10/9c on FX as well as FXX, and will stream the next day on Hulu.

These things never had showrunners!? That's wild to think about. Maybe that's part of why so many of these things have felt merely "OK".

Wanda and Hawkeye were really good, and then Falcon and the Winter Soldier was good but also felt a bit like checking a box to get the shield on Sam. All of the shows since have been pretty bland to me. Secret Invasion really drove it home to me that not only are these shows just alright, somewhere along the way the shorter seasons went from making each episode feel special to being like.....oh, it's like a regular show only you get half or even a quarter of the episodes...fun!

The thing that really hit me with Secret Invasion was that I had just finished a rewatch of Agents of Shield. While there have been some real gems with the short show prestige stuff from streaming channels.....if you want a stark contrast to the other side of the coin of how we have reinvented television for the worst go watch AoS and then SI and appreciate that it is basically just a season of AoS.....with one fourth of the content.....and you have to pay for it....

Rep. Mike says McCarthy should be reinstated as Speaker.

“I believe he is the right person to lead,” he tells reporters.

Asked about his troubles getting 217 votes, Lawler says: “Well, who can?”

“Does anybody have the votes? No.”

That moment when you realize the Rep you are interviewing truly has no idea who the next Speaker should be much less how to get the votes for it.....

  8. I was paying over 300 dollars for a cable bill back in 2012 or 2013. It had ballooned over time because of people moving in and moving out and adding packages, DVRs and such.

When it finally came time that I couldn't afford it I was trying to reduce the package to something manable. I was going through the absolute bare bones options and they told me the best they could do was one box for one TV with basic cable that was only like 8 channels. And it was still going to be a little over 150 bucks.

I offhand mentioned that at this point I was just trying to keep some kind of cable because I thought it was required to have the Internet from them and they said it wasn't. So I dropped the cable altogether and my bill turned into 60 bucks per month for internet.

I grumble about the streamers nowadays, but I always try to remember that for Amazon, Hulu, Disney, Paramount, and Peacock I still pay substantially less in 2023 for all those channels and the Internet connection to go with them than they wanted me to pay for 1 cable box on 1 TV in 2015.

I would never allow a cable box in my house again. I would go without digital entertainment altogether before I ever let a cable company chain another one of those boxes to my ankle.

  9. I have no idea what is going on with my Hulu/Disney+. But I have been preparing for D+ to blow up in price so I am ready to drop it whenever

My billing lists Hulu as 14.99 for No Ads and a while back I was offered D+ No Ads for 2.99 as an add on. I have never been clear if that was the typical Disney/Hulu bundle, or if it was some promotional deal I got by chance.

I do know that it is saying that my Hulu No Ads is going up to 17.99 in November, but no mention of my 2.99 Disney add on going up.

Is this the price increase everyone else is getting?

State appeals court upholds the firing of two LAPD officers who admitted they were playing Pokémon instead of responding to a Compton robbery in 2017.

Whenever this thread gets bumped my masochistic self always thinks, "What the hell, my blood pressure could stand to go way up today!" as I click on it expecting the worst.

It goes to show the low bar that all I can really manage reading this is, "At least they didn't kill anyone.....".

And it turned out to be a septuagenarian game show host

There was a time when Cruz and Rubio were also seen as the youthful future of the party, as well.

Whatever you think of these boring white coat racks personally, it IS funny to watch the GOP repeatedly feed what they think is their future leadership to Trump because.....well hell, who even knows why because anymore. He's basically lost them every election since '16. His underperformance in '22 itself is why McCarthy's whole Speakership has an asterisk next to it like a Barry Bonds batting record right up to and including getting ousted by Captain Helmet Hair.

I guess because it's easier to win a Republican primary by being a bobblehead.

Boy, Trump's combover is really starting to lose structural integrity.

Steve Scalise should take a shot at the job.

Whenever Scalise takes another step on the GOP leadership ladder I like to post this link about the time Scalise refered to himself as "David Duke without the baggage".

A quote itself that gained prominence in 2015 when it was uncovered that Scalise had given a speech at a white supremacist/neo-nazi summit in 2002.
