CitizenVectron
Canadians will no longer have access to news content on Facebook and Instagram, Meta says | CBC News WWW.CBC.CA The social media giant Meta has confirmed that it will end access to news on its social media sites for all Canadian users before Bill C-18, the Online News Act, comes into force. Cry babies, but good news for people I guess. Quote The social media giant Meta has confirmed that it will end access to news on its social media sites for all Canadian users before Bill C-18, the Online News Act, comes into force. The tech company made the announcement on Thursday, the same day the bill received royal assent. The law will force tech giants like Meta and Google to pay news outlets for posting their journalism on their platforms. In reality, this will only really remove legit news sources from Facebook, and the fake news stuff will still be on there.
Jason
Eh, I think forcing companies like Facebook to pay for links to news sites is dumb. It's free advertising for the news sites. I can understand making the tech company pay if it's something like Google Amp where they're extracting the entire article and interfering with the ability to get ad views for people who actually click through to read the article, but paying for simply providing the link has been tried in Europe before and was abandoned pretty quickly because of how dumb it is. Xbob42
...do the news sites have to pay Meta or Twitter for linking to Facebook/Twitter? Like 80% of articles I've seen lately do?
