Mainframe Industries, a European video game studio founded in 2019, finally revealed its first project on Wednesday — a new MMO role-playing game called Pax Dei. Mainframe bills it as an “immense, player-driven, social sandbox” filled with political machinations and player groups numbering in the thousands, a heady combination of Eve Online and Rust. What Polygon was able to see during a brief, hands-off demo in late February was a tremendously beautiful game, but questions still remain on whether or not the seasoned team of industry veterans can pull off its ambitious goals — which includes a PC version as well as a cloud-based client playable on “any screen,” including consoles and mobile phones.

Pax Dei is high-fantasy MMO filled with gameplay elements borrowed from the survival genre, games like Ark: Survival Evolved. In motion it looks like The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, but built with Unreal Engine 5. It boasts impressive lighting and materials interaction, with cloth that ripples realistically, hair that bounces, and shafts of light catching motes of dust as they stream through the windows of rural cottages. Moreover, the game borrows its economic model from Eve, meaning that both geography and scarcity will play a role in a dynamic marketplace.

Fight supernatural beasts and gather resources in a vast open world driven by players.

A few of the people behind EVE Online, along with former Blizzard, Ubisoft, and Remedy developers, have formed a new studio to make their own sandbox MMO. Mainframe's first game, Pax Dei, sounds a lot like EVE Online, except it's down on Earth (or something like it) and set in the Middle Ages.

In Pax Dei, myths, magic, and the supernatural are real. Your character will start with nothing in a zone protected by one of the gods, and as you explore the "procedurally aided" open world and collect resources, you can build a home. Pax Dei encourages players to form communities, or clans, in several ways, like giving you larger plots of land when you place them near others.

"You can play solo to your heart's content in the game," lead game designer Pétur Örn Þórarinsson said in an interview with PC Gamer. "But there's a lot of soft incentives to work with other people."

I've had a presentation for a promising new sandbox MMO called Pax Dei.

It looks like an Arthurian fairytale. I saw characters in flowing dresses in a sun-dappled wood working together to build picturesque hamlets or settlements. They placed down floors and walls in a blueprint-style way, as in other building games, before equipping plate armour and weaponry and venturing to darker, more barren and dangerous areas of the world. The smoky spirit-like enemies they encountered there were genuinely scary.

One of the most eye-catching things about Pax Dei is its looks. This is Unreal Engine 5 and Pax Dei is a handsome beast, and you can see some of that in the screenshots here, although I think they're pulled from the announcement trailer. But in play, it looks similar, and the settlements you create are gorgeous.

The second notable thing about the pitch is sandbox player freedom. In Pax Dei, there are no NPCs, besides monsters, which means you can forget about the usual towns you find in other MMOs. There are none. Every settlement is made by players, which also means that all the vendors or quest-givers you find in other MMOs are not here either. Again, that all comes from you.
