An innovative new chip uses light for fast, efficient AI computations, promising a leap in processing speeds and privacy.

Penn Engineers have developed a new chip that uses light waves, rather than electricity, to perform the complex math essential to training AI. The chip has the potential to radically accelerate the processing speed of computers while also reducing their energy consumption.

The silicon-photonic (SiPh) chip’s design is the first to bring together Benjamin Franklin Medal Laureate and H. Nedwill Ramsey Professor Nader Engheta’s pioneering research in manipulating materials at the nanoscale to perform mathematical computations using light — the fastest possible means of communication — with the SiPh platform, which uses silicon, the cheap, abundant element used to mass-produce computer chips.

Paramount Plus and Peacock could be the next bundled streaming services.

In Comcast’s case it may make sense. Both Paramount Plus and Peacock have been working hard to court subscribers in order to further solidify their respective statuses as lasting players in the streaming space. According to a new report, the platforms’ parent companies could be considering a unique partnership.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Comcast and Paramount have been in recent talks about a potential streaming partnership that could see Paramount Plus and Peacock being offered to subscribers together as a package deal. Along with making access to the two platforms comparatively cheaper than buying separate subscriptions, the partnership would help Comcast and Paramount “produce significant cost savings — from spending on programming to marketing.”

A report from the Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) concludes that U.S. fab construction is among the slowest in the entire world, and it's because of messy and complex regulatory policies (via Dylan Patel). The report concludes that the CHIPS Act isn't enough to improve fab construction regarding cost and time, and suggests reform at all levels of government is necessary to get the U.S. on par with China, Europe, and Taiwan.

The vital issue for fab construction in the U.S. is regulation, according to the report, which notes it is "beneficial to the general public but present tradeoffs for semiconductor manufacturers" and describes it as "arcane." The study doesn't recommend scrapping regulation entirely, but instead suggests removing redundant rules and carving out exceptions for the semiconductor industry.

The findings aren't surprising, as many high-profile fabs have missed their original targets for production. TSMC's Fab 21 in Arizona recently added a one-year delay, Intel's Ohio fabs are apparently slipping from 2025 to late 2026, and Samsung delayed a Texas-based foundry to 2025 due to not receiving its CHIPS Act funds.

Another critical priority which cannot be overlooked is the impending skilled-worker shortage. Recent estimates indicate the U.S. semiconductor industry is on track to face a shortfall of 300,000 engineers and 90,000 skilled technicians by 2030, making this a crucial issue.

One rapid way to help close this gap is to establish and expand chip-related training programs, including factory automation, chemical engineering, material science and advanced vacuum systems at technical colleges located near planned manufacturing centers. Addressing the labor gap in more advanced engineering and design roles will also require a concerted effort to grow the pipeline of U.S. STEM students, attract more of them to the semiconductor industry, and bring more STEM professionals into the U.S. economy from overseas.

Growing up in a suburb I didn't have the ability to get to a store very easily, so the first time I'm certain I bought a game with my own money on launch day was 9-9-99, for the Dreamcast launch.

That was the first launch system I ever bought, followed by the PS2. I don't remember my first launch game, so it was most likely a PlayStation game like GTA 2 or something. I might have bought a Sega Genesis launch game, but I mostly bought used games back then.

New CW heads Dennis Miller and Brad Schwartz came to the TCA armed with a message: Consider us a Big 5 network, right alongside ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox.

“We have ambitious goals, but we recognize where we’re coming from,” Schwartz said. “We’re the underdog competing against titans. But ultimately what we are striving for is to have everyone stop writing ‘Big 4 networks’ and start writing ‘Big 5.’ We know it’s gonna take some time, but that’s the goal.”

The CW appears to be currently in a major volume push, as Schwartz noted that the CW will be airing more than 500 hours of sports and more than 450 hours of original series this year. “We’re trying lots of new things,” he said. “We want to be a big five network. And now with news sports talk scripted unscripted live events, game shows, we’re getting there… we couldn’t operate this as a niche kind of cable brand anymore. And specifically only targeted audience that they need isn’t watching as much broadcast TV as they used to.”

It's hard to imagine that happening when they will be making less content worth watching. When they no longer have DC content, I doubt I'll be watching that station at all. Maybe to watch WWE NXT if it doesn't stay available on Peacock?

First up, the biggest reveal of the lot: the Fantastic Four movie's official cast. Making the announcement on its social media channels – including X/Twitter – Marvel confirmed that Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us), Vanessa Kirby (Napoleon), Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear) have officially signed on to play Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, and Ben Grimm/The Thing.

    Sounds great to me!
