"Separating the art from the artist," as I understand it, initially came about as a way to not stifle discussion about art when the person making it did lousy things. So you could have a discussion about the merits of The Shining or Kubrick's oeuvre without the discussing his treatment of Shelley Duvall.

The notion of whether spending money on art / media you like that's made by someone problematic, alive, and who stands to profit from the purchase is a newer, different thing.

This is 100% correct. The concept of separating the art from the artist, has everything to do with artistic criticism and nothing to do with the political complexities of supporting problematic people.

    Rosemary's Baby isn't a bad movie because Polanski's a rapist.

Harry Potter isn't a bad series of books because Rowling's a TERF.

Hitler's art is bad, but not because he's a nazi.

    That's it.

Separating the art from the artist has nothing to do with whether or not you should stream Rosemary's Baby on Prime or buy the new Harry Potter game. That's a different, albeit valuable conversation, that has nothing to do with the quality of the art in question.

I begrudgingly agree. Playing Diablo 2 again made me realize how much I'm primarily looking at the map overlay and looking at the game second. Playing the Diablo 4 beta without it and looking at the game world (which is much more interactive) was nice.

I can see why people would want it back, but the game is probably better without it.

I do think the whole thing begs a pretty important question about game design. A well-designed game should be most fun when played most optimally. If playing the game on the cutting edge is a worse experience than playing at a middling level, the game's design is flawed. That said, I can think of very few games that actually live up to this standard, and I wish designers put more effort into designing systems where the fun can't be min-maxed out. The recent DOOM games are the only example I can think of where truly the better I got and the harder the game became the more fun I had until my wrists fell off from frantic weapon swapping.

I like that Blizzard is at least trying with Diablo 4. I think the benefits of not having a map overlay probably outweigh the costs, but not including QOL features to try to enhance immersion seems like a pretty inelegant way to force players to have fun.

"Baffling" is absolutely the way I'd describe this:

An often vital QoL feature for ARPGs is purposefully being left out by Blizzard.

I'm honestly with them on this. The full minimap overlay in ARPGs pretty quickly becomes the primary control surface and the game becomes the background. It's a useful tool but it allows players to min-max the fun out of the game really fast.

  4. Looks cool but I'm not sure about the True Detective branding. This doesn't appear to have been written by Pizzolatto, which makes me pretty skeptical. Season 2 was interesting and probably could have been really good if it was a little more coherent or had a little more to say about incoherence. Season 3 was good but ultimately was just chasing Season 1's tail. And, Season 1 is of course one of the best shows ever made.

  5. It's going to be interesting to see how the kids act now that they're finally out from under Logan's heel. Their entire lives orbited around Logan, and I have a feeling they're going to be completely unmoored by his absence. I have a feeling they’re mostly going to keep dancing for his ghost but we also might see some previously suppressed desires and behaviors emerge in them.

The casting for the movies was really good(except hermione and second dumbledore) but I think the only character that would have a real uphill climb to winning people over is whoever they cast for Snape. Good luck my dude.

People underestimate fans willingness to accept new actors in rolls. As long as they’re good they’ll be accepted within the first few episodes.

    This one's actually super easy.

I feel like this show does a really good job of showing the often conflicting drives to be understanding to others and to be understanding to one's self. Ted goes out of his way to prioritize the feelings of everyone around him over his own emotional needs, and it's wearing away at him. He was unable to lead his team in the match against West Ham because he couldn't even acknowledge his feelings about Nate's betrayal to himself, let alone turn those feelings into something productive. What I love about the show, and Ted specifically, is that it's not just a "sad clown" thing. The point isn't that just because he's peppy on the outside doesn't mean that he can't be an interior mess. The point is that because he's so empathetic towards, others when he finds himself in a conflict with someone, he's prone to taking their side against him.

The look on Logan's face when he says "They have some fucking juice." He just loves the thrill of the hunt. He always says "everthing I've done, I've done for my children," which would be true if you swap the word "for" with "to." He truly only lives to abuse people. his children most of all.

Also yeah, the Connor speech at the end was fantastic. It's the type of thing only a character who's been pointedly ignored or derided for several seasons could pull off.

  9. It may just be the time skip but the Roy kids all seem kind of flanderized. The dialogue continues to be all bangers all the time, but I’m starting to feel like there might actually be too many bangers and they’ve gone too far upstream from anything anyone would ever say.

Also I’m officially casting my lot with team Disgusting Brothers. I hope they win the game of thrones.

I know I'm several years late to the party but man, Deep Rock Galactic is incredible.

It's hard to know where to start because everything about this game is fantastically made. The enemy design is fantastic and does a lot to elevate it above other horde shooters. The levels and objectives allow each class to shine in certain circumstances while avoiding making certain compositions mandatory. The vibes of everything are just impeccable. The economy and reward system feel really good since you aren't chasing iLevel upgrades on the same old gear. Everything feels laid out in an approachable way without compromising depth.

I really just started playing this a week ago and I feel like I haven't been left behind in the way I would if I tried playing (somewhat) similar co-op games like Destiny.
