Brian Mulroney — who, as Canada's 18th prime minister, steered the country through a tumultuous period in national and world affairs but left office deeply unpopular — has died. He was 84.

His legacy will include free trade with the US, the modernization of Canada's sales tax regime, and splitting with the US and UK to push for the end of apartheid in South Africa.

Compared to conservatives today he was very moderate (and I'll give him big credit for standing up to apartheid), but was Reagan lite for Canada. A statesman, but not a good prime minister. There's a reason he went from the greatest majority in history to the destruction and elimination of his entire party.
