CitizenVectron Posted July 6, 2021 Share Posted July 6, 2021 I imagine the vetting for this choice was substantially better than for the previous GG (who turned out to be a horrible person, even if she was an astronaut). And, as obviously political as the appointment is (in terms of optics in choosing an Indigenous GG), it's still a good thing. For anyone not familiar, the GG role is effectively Canada's head of state, and serves as stand-in for the Queen in approving Canadian laws, calling elections, etc. It is a ceremonial role that only very, very occasionally has any impact on governance (can decide who becomes government in minority situations, approve or deny dissolving Parliament for an election, etc).
