Since you've been living in a cave the past month. Sony doesn't allow crossplay and if anyone logs on to fortnite with their PS4 they can't play it on the switch or any other platform ever.

Holy shit. You can’t be serious. That fucking sucks.

    Up yours, Sony. :|

I will add you when I get home tonight.  How are you liking it on the Switch?  I wanted to play on my Switch but I logged in on my PS4 once sooooooo... :(

Wanna play online with us? Hit up some cross-platform online multiplayer, dude!

I mean, if we're dismissing a game as being "decent" for averaging 78% on Metacritic, I'm not sure what that says about Kirby (73%), Mario Tennis (76%), or Mario + Rabbids DLC (81%, only three points higher) :p. Octopath looks really nice, but with its publisher being Square-Enix, I'm not sure it's not eventually coming to other platforms.

Most of the multi-plat stuff is old and already on PS4/XBO/PC, whereas the new multiplats are on those three (Far Cry, Monster Hunter World, which is never coming to Switch, Yakuza 6 on PS4). If you think the multiplat stuff is great, then it should be easy to see what's so good about the other libraries!

The libraries are fine, don’t misunderstand me! Just kinda surprised that the PS4 took off as well as it did.

But if this is what’s making the PS4 sell, then that’s cool. Thanks.:peace:

God of War has a 94 Metacritic

Monster Hunter: World has a 90 Metacritic

Far Cry 5 has an 81 Metacritic (and is the best selling game in 2018)

Every single game that was on Matt's list for a top ten game is available on PS4.  All of the top 8 best selling games of 2018 are available on PS4.  9 of the top 10 best selling games over the last 12 months are available on PS4.  They may not be to your taste, but people are buying them.

Yeah, and I get that. But why on PS4? A lot of those games are multi-plat/on PC. What’s the draw to Playstation?

    Brand name/loyalty? Nostalgia? Something else?

    Honestly curious.

No, but it's weird that someone invested in the Nintendo ecosystem can't see things like this. Like, brushing off two of the games as sequels, but... you're a Nintendo fan. That's sequel city; many of the sequels happen to be a high quality. Their big games this holiday are Super Smash and Pokemon, and last year's biggest games were Zelda, Mario and Splatoon. The Switch library isn't as good as PC, Xbox One or PS4 so far this year. I mean... what am I missing? :p

Yeah, wasn’t sure what the metric was. I’m cool with sequels. :D

Switch has some pretty good stuff this year already with Kirby, Mario Tennis, Mario + Rabbids DLC, Octopath Traveler and the two holiday titles coming up you already mentioned.

Plus all the great multi-plat stuff.

I don't know how else to tell you this...

But many of Switch's games this year have been old PS4 games, Wii U ports, and in some cases remasters of 16-bit games.

Is that what is driving PS4 sales?

PS4 has had a stellar year so far.  God of War, Detroit, Yakuza 6 and Shadow of the Colossus was a strong line-up of exclusives for the first half.  A few 'console exclusives' as well, for whatever that's worth.

Has it? Two sequels in old franchises, a decent "choose-your-own-adventure" game (78% on metacritic), and a remaster of a PS2 game from 2005. That equals a "stellar" year so far?

I mean, I'm okay if it is. I'm just not sure what the criteria is anymore.

I'd take a TMNT game with an actual deep combat system over a Superman any day.

I just wish TMNT would pick an identity and stick with it. This re-branding, re-booting of the franchise every four or five years is bullshit.

    Agreed.

I understand.  It will be interesting to see if that is enough to shrink the sales gap in Europe between Switch and PS4.

Agreed. Though, Pokémon is a really big franchise. And Smash is pretty big, too. Guess we’ll see.

I’m a little surprised PS4 is still doing as well as it is. I don’t know what keeps driving it, but Sony better not let off the gas.

  9. Subjectively: Gameboy. Too much nostalgia for me to ignore.

Objectively: 3DS. All the great stuff of the DS/DSi, plus solid smatterings from all

of Nintendo’s other handhelds, Game Gear, NES, SNES and Genesis.

Modding taken into account: Probably the Vita. Or that GDP Win thing.

Honorable mentions:  Neo Geo Pocket Color. This thing was just so cool and had a small library of incredible games. Plus connectivity with Dreamcast! Awesome.

PSP: Fantastic handheld, and incredible tech for the time. Just kinda rendered obsolete thanks to Vita.

It's funny; I loved that intro for every PS1 game:

It sounded majestic, like you were getting into a whole world of wonder and it got me psyched.

No need anymore with suspend/resume. It's so much more convenient now to just jump into a game or whatever app I'm using, even if that means I'm not getting that awesome startup screen that I remember so positively. :p

I both loved and hated that startup. I loved it for the same reasons you stated...but I also hated it because it took sssssoooo long just to get to the game. You basically wait for a good minute or two before you actually get to start playing what you want, lol. :p

The lightning-quick start up of the N64 often made that system my console of choice during that gen.

Thankfully, the startups of the following generation of consoles were both kind of epic/memorable as well...but didn’t waste as much of your time before letting you start playing!

  11. Home consoles only? It’s either SNES, Dreamcast or Gamecube.

I’m mostly into portable gaming though, so the original Gameboy or the original DS hold higher regard for me than the consoles. 3DS ranks really high as well.

But if we’re talking home consoles, I’m going to give it to the ‘Cube. So many great titles, many of which I played during my college days. LAN play with Mario Kart: Double Dash!! was insane, and playing online with Phantasy Star Online was awesome. But the thing that really tips it over the edge? The best peripheral ever made: the Gameboy Player. Having all my Gameboy/Color/Advance games playable on a single system along with all the GCN-exclusive stuff was just too perfect.

Close runner-up is Dreamcast, and then SNES.
