    Is it just me?

    It is not just you.

I loved JC3 and probably played about 100 hours of it.
I only played JC4 for about 4 hours.

An example of why I don't like JC4:

One of my fav activities in JC3 was the simple wing suit missions. You'd goto a mission start point, usually on top of a mountain, and then Wingsuit through check points. It was simple fun and a great way to explore how huge the world was.

In JC4 those missions are now gone. They have been replaced with "Wingsuit Stunts" (there is a storyline where your helping get cool shots for a director with these "Stunt" missions). Each of these Wingsuit stunts are about 3 checkpoints and last about 8 seconds. They are near pointless.

I thought there was a lot of work that went into game specific network code to make online play good.  This sounds like it will be hit-or-miss.

There is a ton of work that goes into a games netcode. But that's not what's happening here.

This isn't somehow giving the game the ability to have netcode.

The game still thinks it's being played locally.

Steam is broadcasting the hosts screen to all the other remote players (like a twitch livestream).

Steam is also detecting the other remote players controllers and emulating those controllers on the hosts computer, so that games think everyones controller is plugged into the hosts system.

This is how Parsec does it and it works well, as long as the host has good internet.

  3. Interesting. This is what the Parsec app does.

I assume that Steam will implement this in the same way, where the Host needs to stream their screen to all other players.

As long as the host has a very good connection, it works very well.
I've played games like Crawl, Diner Bros, Octodad, Death Squared, Lego Marvel, and a whole lot more with Parsec.

Glad to see more options coming for Local co-op only games.

  4. Who is playing?
The way the game progresses now is extremely interesting.
You no longer level up. Instead everything is gear based.

And on top of that, all gear is sorta "locked" to the biome you found it in.
So if you are totally tricked out in legendary loot, the moment you step into the next biome all that gear becomes dramatically weaker.
Kinda of a shock if, like me, you were curious to explore around at first.

Seems like the game is built to have you focus on one area at a time now.

I played about 6 hours today, and am really enjoying myself.

The main tip I'll give to anyone starting out is go directly to a town and talk to EVERY NPC.

Any of them could have a quest. The quests will show up on your map, and they will be colored for how difficult they are (white being the easiest).

Do quests first, as each quest gives you good loot, and sometimes some special items (like your hang glider, climbing shoes, etc...)

Also, it's dramatically easier to fast travel in the game. You just have to find "Life Shrines" around the map, and then you can click on any of them to fast travel to that point.

Pic of me and my gear so far. I can pretty much kill anything in the current zone without any worry.

    But it kinda is.

Nah, stuff like the social club is baked into the games themselves and bug you constantly to join and try out their new features. So it's fine.

A launcher is something that you interact with for 2 seconds to launch the game. So it should be boycotted.

They paid for a studio that wouldve made exclusives for them anyway?

Would've made exclusives for them anyway... as long as Microsoft didn't buy them.

And considering that Insomniac and Microsoft have done games in the past, and the rate at which Microsoft has been buying larger indie studios, i would not be shocked if Microsoft had made them an offer.

  7. So I decided to give Gamepass for PC a try this week.

The last time I tried out the Xbox app on my PC was during Sea of Thieves Open Beta, and I had a pretty awful experience with trying to get it to work.

There was a bunch of issues with it requiring Windows Update to be enabled, it required Windows Firewall to be enabled (for some reasons I will never understand), and then just inviting friends to my party worked very poorly.

But I gotta say, this new beta Xbox app for the Gamepass for PC is pretty solid. And beyond having to update to Windows v1903, there was no other hoops to jump through. The app no longer cares if Windows Update or Windows Firewall is enabled. It's pretty damn easy to use, and friends joining my game was as easy as them right clicking my name in the Xbox app and selecting "join".

Been super pleased with it so far.

I see you still live in the fantasy universe where "competition is always good" still makes some sort of sense

You're right, markets where monopolies thrive are great. Just look at how many people enjoy Comcast!

Driving more and more users towards another platform, like Epic, creates competition

It does the exact opposite , if I can only buy something from 1 store its not much of a competition.

    ???
If you can only buy something from one marketplace, then that is competition for all other marketplaces.

Exclusivity to Epic may not be something that you personally enjoy, but by doing that it does drive users towards it.

Epic doesnt want to compete because they know they cant.

I truely don't understand this statement.

You might be saying "Epic can't currently compete with steam in terms of extra features", which would be true.

But Epics users don't care. At least right now they don't.
Epics active user base is larger than steams active user base.
This is overwhelmingly because of Fortnite.

These users are very young, and will be growing up with the Epic Launcher being the main game launcher that they know.

In 5 to 10 years, as that user group matures, the Epic Store will continue to stay relevant if it can continue to cater to them.

Which means offering more than just Fortnite.

  9. Just to be the odd man out, I'll go ahead and argue that what Epic is doing does benefit us as consumers:

The dozen or so other PC Gaming storefronts (Uplay, Origin, GoG, etc) haven't really put a dent in Steams overall complete control of the PC Gaming marketplace.
Having one platform that controls 90+% of the market is bad for pricing, and bad for consumers.

Driving more and more users towards another platform, like Epic, creates competition.
If Epic gets large enough for Steam to actually view it as competition, it'll be forced to react and adjust.

These types of adjustments are almost always better for the consumer.

Really? Because it took Risk of Rain 2 in Early Access like a week to hit 650k, and a million in just one month, and that game visually looks like a high-res, unfinished PS1 game. I bet Satisfactory would've been 2+ million by now easy.

But sure, this confirms the "majority" of people don't care about launchers. As long as you ignore all the contrary evidence. :daydream:

I mean... RoR2 is a different genre of game, it is a sequel to a game that already sold 1-2 million copies, and it was announced for release at the Gearbox Borderlands 3 event.

But I guess that main thing it has going for it over Satisfactory is that it's on Steam. Sure.

Wonder how many million they'd be up to by now if not exclusive? Even something like Factorio, which is like a pretty ugly 2D version of Satisfactory, is around the 1-2 million mark last I checked. These games do gangbusters on Steam.

It took Factorio multiple years to reach 1-2 million.

500K for Satisfactory in the first 10 weeks is pretty damn good numbers.

If anything I think these numbers show that a majority of gamers probably couldn't care less what launcher they are using to play the game they want to play.
