While I don't know anything about the culture at Discord, I do think that some huge changes seem inevitable as the service moves out of VC funded growth mode.

I can't find anything to suggest that Nitro subs cover anything close to their burn rate, and while I love the idea of an optional subscription social service succeeding, we haven't seen one yet. If they want to start justifying the hundreds of millions raised, they need to find new ways to monetize and they need to make big changes to make it more accessible to a wider audience. User growth has slowed considerably, which is not a good place for it to be pre-IPO.

One of those reviews mentions that they've been in hyper growth mode but haven't been getting the growth, and that's essentially the problem. They've built a great product for specific use cases, but I'm sure the VCs are not happy with Discord being IRC/Teamspeak for the 2020s.

    Agreed.

They have a massive user base, but not a great monetization model.

Anytime that happens, there is going to be some changes that are going to frustrate users.

IMO I think it would have been smart of them to accept the $10B Microsoft buyout a couple of years ago.

I booted this up. It runs extremely well on the PS5 and looks great. It isn’t a true open world but you get a decent size space to drive around in. There seem to be quite a few worlds that you will be able to access eventually. The driving feels good. It’s a solid game.

Unfortunately, it’s a 2K game. Missions are gated behind levels. I did 2 main races, 2 training events and 1 world event and my level is about 2 3/4. I can’t do the next race until I am level 4.  Not a problem if there is a lot to do but there isn’t much. You are expected to grind the races over and over until you hit the level or buy some micro transactions to bypass. Pretty scummy especially for a game directed at kids. It is unfortunate because there is a good game here.

Most reviews and community responses seem to agree.

There is a solid game here that is unfortunately barred behind an outrageous microtransaction structure, which seems especially bad considering the younger audience that will likely be playing this game.

I hope that the response to the game will trigger a revamp of their monetization model, but it's 2K so im not holding my breath.

  3. I just got into this game game a couple of weeks ago. It's amazing. I can't put it down.

There is no good way to avoid money going to people you find contemptible in a society. Spend however you wish, but it is an illusion that you aren't putting money into the pockets of detestable people when you generally spend money in the market. It simply isn't possible to avoid doing so, but it makes some people feel better to explicitly avoid certain people in the market. Our brains are weird that way.

Sure. I wasn't trying to argue that we all need to be making sure our money always goes towards "good" people.

My issue was more that whenever I, or anyone, brings up that I don't wanna buy this game, people often say "separate art from the artist".

And that in cases where a person doesn't want to support that artist, it's perfectly acceptable to not buy that art.

I'm fully aware that this game is still gonna sell like hotcakes, and that my lack of a purchase will be imperceivable.

But hell, how many times have gamers used the phrase "vote with your wallet"? That's basically all I'm doing.

Wait there's transphobic stuff in the Harry Potter lore??? Also that's sad to hear about her bullshit ruining your childhood love of the books. I'm a firm believer that you can separate the art from the artist as long as they don't infuse the work itself with their problematic bullshit. I get that it would leave a sour taste on your mouth. It would be like me discovering Stan Lee was a Klan member.

I fully agree with enjoying art, and separating art from the artist.

My issue is: If in order to enjoy that art, I have to pay money, and a portion of that money then goes to the artist, then there isn't a great way to separate it.

That said, this is just what I'm choosing to do. I don't hold any ill will towards anyone that wants to enjoy this game.

I just think people use the "separate the art from the artist" line far too often when the artist is still getting paid.

JKR has just decimated my love for a series I was obsessed with for so many years. I still keep my HP books from my youth, but I haven't done my yearly reread of the series in a handful of years now. I just have almost no interest in new HP stuff,  this game included. Nevermind the fact I have so much else to play that it's not like I feel I'm missing out.

With you on that. I still have a lot of love for the Harry Potter books, movies, and overall lore.

And I have a lot of hype for this game.

However, I wont be buying it as I don't wanna do anything that could give JKR any profit.

  8. I've only had a chance to play it for about an hour. And overall I feel like there is a fun game somewhere in here.

However my main concern so far is traveling the world. It seems slow and clunky. Grappling hooking from roof to roof isn't as satisfying as I hoped it'd be. And the motorcycle drives around 15MPH.

Does traversal end up feeling better once you unlock the "heroic" moveable ability (am assuming that's the ability that lets you glide)?

  9. It's a pretty solid catalog.
And as someone that has already been a PS+ subscriber for years, I'm happy for the upgrade.

But when this was first announced, I was most excited for the catalog of classic titles, and that seems to be very lacking in this announcement.
In fact, they don't mention a single PS2 title... which seems odd?

  10. I'm loving the game so far.

But, one of my biggest issues with the game is it's new camera.

In the previous lego games the camera was almost overhead, so you could easily see a large area of the levels and find the collectables.

In this game, the camera is more like a 3rd person over-the-shoulder view, and the FOV is really tight. So it makes it takes more effort to look in every area, and make sure you've explored everything.

    Nah. That's not true.

HZD on ps5 and PS4 are almost different games. It wasn't held back. This is a nonsense fan opinion. PC devs have been doing this for almost 25 years.

I played the PS4 version. Its a pale imitation. Its scaled down a lot in every areas of the game, and uses videos of PS5's real time scenes for fmv, because the console couldn't handle it. Whats more interesting is how they got it running on PS4 at all,  not that the pS5 version suffered.

Bigger question though, why are you so obsessed with graphics?

Graphics are only one part of PS4 vs PS5.

The PS5's new SSD opens up a whole world of freedom when it comes to level design and amount of data that can be pushed.

Take the new Rachet and Clank for example. Because they knew the knew the game would only be played using the PS5's SSD, they could build gameplay mechanics where literally the WHOLE WORLD changes around the player in less than a frame. And they could do that because the SSD was fast enough to support loading that world data that quickly.
However, if they also had to support the PS4, then that is a gameplay mechanic that would never have been considered. It just wouldn't have made it into the game at all.

God of War 2018 already did incredible things in terms of scale. The World Snake was amazing, for example.

But I can't help but imagine how much more amazing these large scale things could be on the PS5, if it didn't also have to run on the PS4.

God of War 2018 also did plenty of clever "walking through a tight space" things to hide level loading. And if the new game only had to be on PS5, that would be unnecessary, and the level designers could explore making levels in new ways. But sadly we are likely going to see those same level design tricks, since this game also has to run on PS4.

Actually, what are some of the best Lego games (available on the Switch)? I just have Worlds and Undercover.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 was always one of my favs.

I never played it on Switch, so I dunno how well it runs on that.

But I love how many different characters are in that one, and the wacky world.

    It's great.
