Grease payments are actually part of the natural course of business - we were taught it in graduate business school.

However, bribes are illegal and frowned up even in the business community (at least academically).

I was taught it as well, and while it might be legal for American businesses to make them to foreign governments it sure as fuck isn't legal in the United States.

  2. Anyone that grew up in the New York Area and grew up with seeing Trump on TV 15 years before Trump was a reality TV star knew is he was crooked. You don't get buildings made in Manhattan without large amounts of grease money going to certain people. Even if it was his father doing most of the work. How anyone could think this guy walked a straight line to be a billionaire is a fucken moron.

From my understanding (which could be incorrect), aren't a lot of standard costs not included in inflation calculations, like fuel costs and rent? Both of those have been increasing at much higher rates over the past few decades than other costs, which could explain the gap between the modern measurements and the old ones. All I know is that the government always says that inflation is 2 or 3%, yet in reality most people's costs are going up at a much higher rate, year-to-year.

I know fuel is included in the calculation, and I believe landlords are surveyed about rental rates, but  I am not 100% sure on that one.

  4. Lol the enlistment oath you take at MEPS when you join is to make you think you joined so there is less chance of you flaking out before going to bootcamp. It doesn't mean anything. These are DEP discharges. They are not servicemembers.

However, immigration attorneys told the AP that many immigrants let go in recent weeks were an “uncharacterized discharge,” neither dishonorable nor honorable.

Thats because they havn't actually served in the military. They just signed an enlistment contract. It is called a DEP discharge. Until they do their second oath right before they get on the plane to go to bootcamp they are not considered a service member.

That isn't a comment on what is going on, just trying to clarify something blatantly left out by the article.

I am 100% sure that I am 0% proud to be an American.

used to be when I thought that to some degree we were the liberal, progressive ideal in the world. The "shining city on a hill". The "bring your meek, your poor, your huddled masses".  Not overly proud, I've always been critical of America and its policies.

But since Trump? This is next level. Nope. We're an actively "shithole country" now.

Can you state the years when any of this existed?

It sounded like you were dismissing it as something that did nothing, but it was an impressive and long-lasting movement. Apologies.

Anyway, I'm not predicting that the seat won't get filled. I said from the start that I feel that there's a pretty high chance this gets filled unless a Republican surprises me (one that's not running for reelection) and votes no. The reason I brought up Alabama (and it wasn't to remind people I was saying it was competitive even before we found out Moore was a pedophile), the gun control movement, the health care protests, and let's add the #metoo movement as well, is because all of them were probably told, "Good luck with that. We're screwed." Yet Roger Ailes fell in disgrace, Bill O'Reilly was canned, Matt Lauer was let go, Harvey Weinstein was toppled, gun control laws were enacted (yes, I'd like even more enacted, but a GOP legislature/governor being pressured to act was freaking huge down here), gun control groups became more powerful, Democrats are likelier to attack and fight against the NRA, health care repeal was gutted as people protested in even deep red districts, and Doug Jones won Alabama.

This very well could go exactly as we're thinking it's going to go, but I'd like to be able to say I exercised my right to contact my Senator, and with future judicial nominations still in play in 2019 and 2020, it makes 2018 even more important (another vacancy opening up but with a Democratic leader of the Senate would be way preferable).

If you agree with all this, great. Let's work the phones and do our part even if it's for naught. This doesn't depress me; it just makes me more motivated to vote in even the tiniest elections and referendums.

When we tell you you're awesome and welcome here always. :)

I would think after this next justice is placed all of the recent gun control laws passed by states are going to be the first things to go once they make it up there.

  7. Sounds like they pulled too many amps when they were both running. Can you not just plug the AC into another line that has nothing else drawing a lot of amps through it? The 14 guage wire is rated for 15 amps. I would think that an AC would need a bit heavier line going to it. But I don't know what the ac you have will draw.
