I am 100% on the Indigenous protester's side here. However, it's a pet peeve of mind when people claim that the Americas were a peaceful utopia before Europeans came. There was war, tribalism, murder, rape, and everything else that the rest of the world had. The only difference was that the Indigenous people hadn't advanced to the same level of technology so it was less organized. But we barely have any recorded history for the continent, and to assume that they were all hunter-gatherers who co-existed peacefully is pretty naive. Having said that, what happened to their civilization was awful.

Well, to be fair 'we never had walls here' is a pretty uncontroversial statement. I mean, there was mostly free movement of people all over the world really until less than 100 years ago.

I would like to see Tesla bought by a major car company that knows how to pump cars out so the prices of these things can come down. Fuck I feel like I am going to be 80 before these things become standard.

Give it a couple years and one of the major manufacturers will buy the pieces of Tesla after bankruptcy.

  3. I don’t care if you live in NYC or Silicon Valley, a $500k income gives you resources that the average person could only dream of and is therefore reasonable to call it rich.

Like, even the most swanky Manhattan condominiums still have janitors that are definitely not making even $100k, but I’m supppsed to believe that $500k is just doing ok because it’s just so expensive to live in some places? Get real.

Well, sometimes. In Canada this year in local elections it resulted in some weird results. The main issue is that many people don't put down second or third choices, so the ultimate winner can still have a sub-50 victory. Also, in almost all cases the front-runner wins in the end.

It's really not that great of a system in terms of representative democracy, especially in places with more than two legitimate choices. The only reason Americans like it is because it further entrenches the two-party system.

You’ve said this before and I’m not really sure which elections you’re talking about. Ranked choice isn’t exactly new in Canada — it’s been used for years for party leadership votes and the results are not how you’re describing them. As one example, the CPC use a ranked ballot, and in their last leadership race Andrew Scheer won even though in the first round he only had 21% of the votes compared to Maxime Bernier with 28%.

  5. Basically, sexual harassment/assault is done by people that do not respect people’s boundaries / feel entitled to do what they want to other people (or even get off on pushing past someone’s boundaries). The suggestion that NDT’s attractiveness would have any bearing on this comes off very incel-ish because no matter how attractive you think NDT is, it’s plainly true that most women aren’t going to enjoy him awkwardly lifting at their shoulder straps or whatever else he is accused of doing.

The city held a plebiscite and a majority voted against bidding for the Olympics. For those who don't know, Calgary (and Alberta in general) is experiencing a 5+ year major downturn on the back of low oil prices.

    I'm very happy about this.

Why would you be happy GOSH! Vancouver 2010 was AWESOME, this would’ve been even better. ALSO Calgary (all of Alberta really) could use a make work project — this would be much better than a fucking pipeline.

edit: @mclumber1‘s idea is the worst idea in the history of ideas.
