  1. I can't say I'm "thrilled" about the potential of Nintendo games costing 70 dollars, but it's also just what the market is doing. That said, unlike just about every other publisher, Nintendo doesn't do price drops willy-nilly, so good luck finding a copy for under 50 bucks in 3 years after launch unless there's a 3rd party discount somewhere for some retail store.

I'll still wait and see what holds when the info drops though. It's possible it's 60 bucks for base game, and 70 bucks including a Season Pass, but I believe that was 20 bucks or something for BOTW. Needless to say, if the game is as vast, and packed as we're all hoping, it could turn out Xenoblade levels of gameplay time, and help "justify" the possible price point.

Also agree with this, I don't think the remakes replace either RE2 or RE3. Maybe it's because I grew up with them but I replayed both not that long ago and both still ruled, archaic controls or not.

The archaic controls are why I can't play the OG Resi games. People have been complaining about Goldeneye's controls, but OG Resident Evil's controls are about as useful as shoving peppercorns up your asshole. Played maybe an hour of REmake on GCN, plus some of OG RE2 way back in the day, and noped real quickly.

Now the REmake games, plus RE2, and 3 though have piqued my interest for awhile now, and with Revelations 1 & 2 on top of that, that could compliment my PC library quite nicely.

To some degree.  The housing market has been going up significantly in the 13 years since I had left (more than doubled in value) -- yes, it did get much worse in the pandemic.

There is SOOO much to do on this house.  I've also put in a new AC unit, a new water heater (tankless), and re-insulated my attic.  My whole house has 40-year old parquet flooring, and I just pulled up 20-year old carpeting from my stairs (and have bare pine showing).  I would have been OK living with someone else's finishes for a while.  :)

I was about to mention about Abestos, and Lead Paint concerns for you, but I think those were banned in Canada decades before the US did.

sounds like it’s time to start embezzling from the different project budgets a bit. Siphon off some money from each one and then you got your tv money.

I did just spend a few hundreds dollars buying some more Milwaukee tools + Batteries. My EGO, and Milwaukee lineup of tools is growing day by day. That, and I'm spending funds to keep my vehicle on the road for the next 3-4 years (that money though is earmarked for automotive).

At this point though, I'm done buying electronic hardware for gaming purposes (Upgraded PC + Steam Deck last year), so housing projects (both big, and small) have taken much of the time and effort. Got a new Metal Roof last year (because it's our forever home), plus water heater, and softener, and previously upgraded the furnace when we first got the house.

When we moved back to Canada in '19 -- we were forced to buy a "fixer" due to the ridiculous housing inflation in Canada.

We've redone the windows, siding, eaves/gutters, lighting on the upstairs level and 2 of the three bathrooms.  (Doing almost all of the interior work ourselves.)

Fortunately, the city just re-did the electrical/sewer/roads/sidewalk and dug up half our driveway -- so we ended up getting the rest paved for C$1,600.

I imagine the housing market in Canada got particularly bad during the Pandemic though, correct? And was probably better you got the house then rather than in the middle of it all, or slightly afterwards? At least with all the stuff you've replaced, and done, it makes the whole place feel your own, and not so much someone else's place you just happen to buy it from, which I find a big joy in owning a house. You slowly make it yours.

I was looking at similar size TVs at Costco -- and am waiting for the same thing.

We're redoing the Master Bath shortly, and the Kitchen comes next....  So it may be a couple more years...

Good stuff! We're unfortunately putting that off to address upgrading the electrical in the whole house later this spring, plus a new driveway afterwards possibly next year if not sooner. Then the Kitchen, and Bathroom remodel will commence. And only then will I tackle the basement. So much money...

At 4x the size of my 37", the does translate to about 75 or so inches for 4k, which for me makes the perfect upgrade size. Though, I'm going to wait until the basement is finished in a few short years before I take the plunge. Currently doing a long-term Radon test to see if we'll need a mitigation system or not. Also properly patching any cracks in the foundation walls beforehand (though luckily a wet basement we haven't had since we moved almost 3 years ago)

I’ve actually got it connected to my Tv. The LG 65QNED90. It has Gsync for the PC and free sync for the XsX.

Jokes on me. I'm still rockin' a 37" Samsung 1080p TV from around 2007-2008.

Even my PARENTS have a 4K TV now. :|

  8. Look at you guys with your fancy-schmancy 1440p, and 4k monitors...

     Fail Spider Man GIF

Though truthfully, I'd like to upgrade to Alienware's 34" QD-OLED, but a grand is difficult to justify. Would rather buy more power tools at this rate. Damn you, Adulting!

You are likely cpu bound in this scenario so that’s why there isn’t much of a gain in that case. I think you’d also want to replace its dlss version with 2.5.1 to help with those fine detail issues. But you don’t need the boost there, so it would only be worth it for the better AA.

Probably would recommend turning on MSI Afterburner, and seeing what kind of usage he's getting.

I should say that the higher the res it works better too. All my impressions are based off 4k really. I know it scales down much better than fsr2 but typically I hear you really want to do quality for 1080p, at least balanced for 1440p. Performance works best on 4k, and ultra performance works best on 8k.

The quality modes are basically how many times down it will scale the internal res so dor 4k it’s 720p, 1080p, 1260p, 1440p (ultra performance, performance, balanced, quality) so when you start at 1440p or 1080p or what have you then those quality modes scale the same which means you get into some really low native resolutions. And with a lower native resolution you will have less detail for the process to pick up and upscale from and that’s when you’ll see more issues pop up (blur during movement, artifacts, flickering)

I think I had it on Quality DLSS at first, but then bumped it down to Balanced for more consistent frames. It can run at 60fps with some tweaks, contrary to what nVidia said. Geez.

    1 minute ago, Spawn_of_Apathy said:

not that I’ve seen. I’ve been playing Horizon Zero Dawn on PC set to 1440p with Ultra settings getting about 90-120fps. I tried turning DLSS on and got about a 10-20% bump in fps, but was seeing some graphical weirdness in places.

like Aloy’s hair would have a bit of blur to it when moving. There were these lines on bridges that when running they would appear static. As though the bridge was suddenly a scrolling 2D image on a CRT Tv.

I didn’t play it that way for long. I turned it back off.

Sounds like some artifacting, and/or shimmering effects as a result of those fine details.

  11. 4 minutes ago, stepee said:

It would because a frame with artifacts is less noticeable the less on-screen time it has. That isn’t a typical experience with dlss though. Dlss quality looks better than native most of the time, balanced about on par, and performance not quite as good but the gains at that point are huge and I’d probably equate it to about 1800p for iq.

I was able to play Portal RTX on my 3060 with DLSS, and overall thought it looked pretty good. But playing at 1080p is a standard resolution these days, so not as though I'm expecting the set my rockers on fire.

Maybe they were the wrong games for it, but I’ve tried DLSS and didn’t find the fps boost to be worth the weird graphical quirkiness of just running it natively.

I have yet to play games beyond 60fps. Would much higher frame rates, say 120fps and above help hide or mitigate those graphical quirks more? Similar to 3D/VR benefitting with high frame rates?

  13. I'm prepared for disappointment, but I'll give it a go in guessing:

    Possibly to happen:

-Zelda TOTK of course will be shown, possibly some gameplay elements, and the size of the world

-Advance Wars, plus Kirby to be shown as well

-DLC for MK8D, plus XC3 DLC to be shown, and maybe another DLC for another game

-Indies getting some love as well (Maybe Silksong finally getting revealed?)

-Pikmin 4 will be the last thing with a reveal trailer, plus launch date in late Summer, plus teaser for Pikmin 1 & 2 for Early Summer (Do not believe May is the launch date unless Zelda is delayed again)

-Lego Deku Tree set unveiled as per the "leaked" images (though I do wonder if those are fake, but we'll see)

    -Bayo Origins

-Some AAA 3rd Party franchise coming to Switch for the first time

    Wishful Thinking:

-The first two Golden Sun games getting remade into one game as the developers intended

    -Prime Trilogy

-Baten Kaitos remake (as per the rumors)

-Grezzo remaking another classic Zelda title, possibly the Oracle of Ages/Seasons games

-Skies of Arcadia getting the Switch treatment as part of new line of Sega Ages titles (only because it's my GOAT)

    Won't happen at all:

    -Prime 4 reveal

    -Switch 2 announcement

  14. The Deck is total Awesome Sauce. Love mine dearly, and is super comfortable to hold, and game for hours. What I also love about it is for those who want to just pick up, and game, it'll largely speaking do that ala Nintendo Switch. You don't really have to do much tinkering to get games to work. Valve has done an incredible job with the Proton Layer, plus SteamOS, and it's only going to get better!

Switch is theoretically 1tflops to the Xbox One OG’s 1.3, but there’s a lot more to their power gulf and I believe that the 1tflops is measured differently (16bit calculations?) in a way that makes it seem closer than it is in practical terms. I see Wikipedia has it at 500gflops docked, I have a feeling that isn’t totally accurate but it’s probably around there. I think counting the cpu difference it’s probably like 1/3rd there. It’s comfortably between a 360 and a X1.

I think this could be a lot closer, reasonably it should be close to a Series S at least but it’s just that it’s NINTENDO

Say the Switch 2 had a 1.84TFLOP chip like the Base PS4, due to architectural differences, additional feature sets, and other efficiency improvements, it'll be more like PS4 Pro in terms of overall horsepower.

Even the Steam Deck, which is about 2TFLOPS, at 720/800p, that's pretty damn close to the Xbox Series S' 4TFLOP horsepower at 1080p. Sure, it doesn't play Dad of War as good at 1080p as it does on PS4, and it doesn't play Doom Eternal at 120fps (actually it might be able to with some tweaks), but console optimizations play a role in that too.

I did prove it was possible to play Doom 2016 at 60fps while only using a total of 10 watts of power, so maybe some magic could be done?

I used to think that switch 2 would be more powerful than the deck, until I got it. After playing games like Valhalla and Uncharted 4, and Spider-man on it, it’s hard to picture that Nintendo has something beyond that in store.

Now I kind of think it’ll be about on the same level with dlss being the wild card (do they use it to get to that level? or do they release something with the raw power of steam deck and then add dlss3 to make things kinda wild?)

DLSS, or some bespoke variant of it is what I, and others I've talked to on Discord, feel is what'll keep the Switch platform relevant in this growing age of 4k gaming. I believe 1080p docked will still be the target, but DLSS upscaling to 4K for Switch 2. That, and Frame Interpolation could also be a thing, which could be a game changer if done right for getting 30fps targeted games to 60fps, or perhaps in some cases, 60fps titles to 120fps.

On paper, I think Switch 2 will be about on par, but with the improved upscaling techniques that nVidia holds, it'll put it a step above as an actual Hybrid console, compared to the Deck's more handheld-centric design.

I'll still continue to use my Deck, and more than likely for years to come as I could find it being useful as an Emulation Device if it can't run some of the newest titles.

  17. Last Thursday, played several rounds of Online with some buddies, and overall we had a blast down this trip on memory lane. Sure, the frame rate doesn't hold, but it's still FAR better than what the N64 could do. I can definitely tell that aiming with either the Joy-Cons, or Pro Controller isn't the greatest due to how short the sticks are. The taller N64 stick makes it easier to fine tune your aiming, even with the Dual Analog modified controls on Switch.

I also finished the main campaign on Agent, and now going through each level on Secret, and 00 Agent difficulties, and what strikes me the game overall does still hold up. Sure, the AI can be a bit dimwitted, especially when you have 3-5 enemies right beside each other shooting at you, but the additional objectives, and the rather surprising spike in difficulty, on top of the unlockable cheats, it's great. It's too bad most new FPS titles do not include more objectives at higher difficulties, and unlockable cheats, though I guess that's become more of a Retro-style of gaming.

Overall, all Goldeneye needed was a better frame rate, and controls. Otherwise, the core game was already solid.

One thing I’ve been really happy about is how seamless save syncing has been between deck and my pc. I haven’t had any issues except sometimes I need to make it sync when I have a game paused on resume.

This has really been the dream for me, the same game on my handheld and tv seamlessly switching between the two on the same save. I know thats the entire focus of the switch, but I wasn’t ever going to play games looking like that on my tv.

Now I get the best of both worlds and it’s definitely the best thing to happen for me in gaming in a long time. The best is when it’s cross save with Xbox too and I get the trifecta.

I've been thoroughly enjoying my Deck as well. The overall feel of it, the responsiveness of the controls, and of course the performance is really good for its size. It's about what I think a Switch 2 will be capable of if and when that launches, but in a similar form factor to OG Switch.

Been playing Hollow Knight, which is my first go at it, and in a rather masochistic way, have been enjoying it very much. Haven't played a proper Metroidvania game in awhile.
