  1. To add to my rant, why the likes of Apple don't provide numpads on their entire line of Macbooks is also beyond me. Not sure if someone there has some sort of symmetry fetish where a numpad will ruin the design of the laptop, but they can go fuck themselves. Even Razer doesn't appear to have numpads on any of their laptops either, even their "productivity" laptops. It's idiotic.

The strangest PC-fetish I have stumbled across in a long time are the keyboard fanatics.

    1)  I never realized it was possible to spend $800 on a keyboard (and have to assemble it yourself)

    2)  Their hate for the number pad is a little strange

    3)  I still laugh every time they talk about lubing their switches

The hatred for numpads I also don't understand. If you do any sort of work on your computer besides gaming, numpads are vastly superior compared to the line of numbers above the letters. Hell, some older games (maybe some newer games do this also) that have numpads for entering passcodes, you can use the numpad to type those numbers. OG Deus Ex springs to mind when entering numbers to unlock a door, safe, computer panel, etc.

I'm actually being too nice about it. Numpads are OBJECTIVELY better than using the other numbers.

Think about how much a night at the movies are. Sporting event. Concerts. For a few hours. Games bring hundreds of hours of entertainment on you schedule anytime you want. Seems like a bargain to me.

One way to determine if it's worth it is Hours Per Dollar, or Dollars per Hour, depending on how you want to phrase it.

EDIT: Hardware geeks use Cost Per Frame to justify if a GPU is worth it or not, so why not apply similar framework for gaming hours?

On a serious note, I really enjoy seeing people experience games like this for the first time.  I’m not someone who spends my time replaying games ofren, but it’s fun to read impressions to kind of relive it that way.

What I'm finding myself doing is kind of hybrid of the two. I'm playing new games, but they're still old. So I'm playing Hollow Knight for the first time right now, but then on the flip side I'm replaying Xenoblade Chronicles for the 3rd time, but it's the Definitive Edition on Switch that I've never played.

I'm less inclined these days to buy games day one because of my back log, but then find my self replaying the same games on other systems. I'm also playing Doom 2016 off and on, and this is the third time I've played it, and on a 3rd different system (Played it first on PS4, sold that, got it for Switch, played that, and now have it on PC, and played on Deck).

And then playing Ass Creed Unity on PC, which I've never played before. I kind of just go with the flow when it comes to play games these days.

A $40 remake is not fine because we should have gotten the whole trilogy.  Except not, because we actually need Metroid Prime 4 instead of old games.  Retro Studios should have never worked on a remake.  Even if by doing so, they got the job to make Prime 4.  But Prime 4 might have released on aged Switch hardware if they started sooner, which would suck.  But nevermind that, fuck remakes.  They're cash grabs excused by desperate fanboys.

Only it's cool that EA gives a shit about Dead Space again.  But not really, because fuck, that it's a remake too.  If only 343i didn't focus on the Master Chief Collection, Halo Infinite would still be alive.  I'm ready and primed to shit on a Bloodborne remake next.  But maybe not, because it'd be on a modern console.  But probably, because it'd be $70!  ARGGHHHH!

Sounds like you have a huge beef with remakes/remasters then.

I think I'll consider the Deck depending on how Nintendo handles the Switch 2.

Right now, my PC is pretty much exclusively for AAA, and the Switch is for Nintendo, indies, and smaller titles. However, if the Switch 2 doesn't have backward compatibility, I'd seriously consider getting a Deck for anything non-Nintendo and never having to worry about backwards compatibility for the foreseeable future.

Take the Steam Deck's hardware capabilities, slap the Nintendo logo on it, and there's your Switch 2. In terms of BC, I cannot imagine Nintendo not including it. It would be extremely boneheaded, and they've made some pretty boneheaded decisions in their time.

I’m actually starting to go the other way with remasters lol. I find as I get older I’m less interested in at least the bigger releases. I find a lot of comfort in playing my old tried and true favorites, so I know lots of them are petty cash grabs and I understand peoples’ frustrations with them (though even then I think folks are hyperbolic about it), but every time a game I like gets announced as a remaster I’m pretty happy about it.

There's also the aspect of...not everyone played these games back in the day, let alone some of them were not even born yet. So to provide these games on newer systems as ports/remasters/remakes, you'd think more folks would be more excited that more gamers can experience them. But it tends to be more, "Just more rehashes and ports. I want new games, durrr!" You'll get your new games, but it's going to take more time. This isn't the 2000s anymore where a developer could make a AAA game from Concept to Gold in 2 years.

It's because everyone wants to repeat in some form or fashion that the Switch is too old.  Yes, we get it.  We know.

These people should just enjoy it in an emulator to stick it to the man with their too-good-for-Nintendo PCs.

They're the same type of people who complain when Toyota doesn't provide a new generation of their 4Runner quickly enough. God Damn thing still sells hot cakes despite how old it is. And as long as the Switch continues to sell well, Nintendo can hold off as long as they want if you ask me. I'm not even mad at this point because I have a Steam Deck to keep my handheld urges occupied, but of course others aren't so fortunate.

Even with the Switch 2, it won't be PS5 levels of graphics anyway. More like PS4/PS4 Pro, which is perfect for a handheld. And even by then, people will complain about it being too underpowered. :silly:

Some weird takes in this thread with the basic criticism being that Nintendo is releasing games on switch still.

This is running at 60fps at what looks to be at least close to native res undocked on the Switch. It looks about as good as is probably possible given that. It’s honestly one of the nicest looking Switch games especially of those without a cartoony style.

If you are upset this doesn’t look better you just wish they would have waited until a Switch 2, which, kinda same, but acting like it’s ridiculous for Nintendo to charge $40 for it is just silly and part of a much larger criticism that has nothing to do with this game so it’s weird to single it out.

Skyward Sword Remaster for $60? Yeah, all day long full rip. But a remake built to about the extent of what the current system can do for $40? That’s fine.

What is interesting is games like Demon Souls, TLOU, Dead Space, etc all got remakes/remasters, and those were all full price if I'm not mistaken. Then this comes out as sort of a hybrid of a remaster/remake for a more budget price, and some folks (not exclusively here) complain about it. Hell, TLOU Part 1 is the most egregious of them all, but that's neither here nor there.

The SS Remaster is interesting because on the one hand it's really just an upres with maybe some slightly clearer textures, there were some QOL improvements to the game itself, including control options, AND the boost to 60fps vs. 30 in the original. Now, do I consider that worthy of full price? No, you're absolutely right. Though a 40 price tag would've been perfect for sure. Even SS wasn't just simple rush job, but still does not justify its price.

I know. I was being sarcastic with the 8 year old comment. If you guys enjoy Nintendo then that's terrific. I think I litteraly hate them at this point.  😆

That being said, as a gamer, I'll probably buy Zelda and the Switch 2 because when Nintendo makes their first party titles they are usually special. It's just that they release those titles once every 4-5 years.

I get that. I hate Nintendo sometimes too, even though I continue to buy their shit.

I'm actually finding myself being less and less a PlayStation person, and going exclusively Nintendo, and PC these days. That could change though in the future. If Sony somehow or another made a new PS5 version that played all previous consoles, I'd buy it straight away.

Adults in their 20s/30s are far and away the largest demographic on Switch.

Yeah, and I think Gen Xers also take up a sizable portion of the demographic too. I want to say between Millennials, and Gen X, that's about 2/3rds of the install base.

Nintendo has provided an updated look at the age distribution of annual playing users on Switch, which we have above. President Shuntaro Furukawa pointed out in a briefing today that there are all types of users ranging from kids to seniors. Over the past year, the number of annual playing users has grown across all age groups. Also highlighted is...

They have been reportedly sitting on this and the two Zelda games for a while now. That's why Jeff Grubb had to cut his hair because they were supposed to announce it at the last direct but they said "fuck your hair!" :p

Not only that, but I think it was the Gamingleaksandrumors Subreddit when the rumor came out the Direct would happen on the week of the 6th, and some folks said it wouldn't happen because the Investor's meeting was that week, and they don't do Directs the same week. I honestly don't know if that's actually true, but if so, I find it absolutely hilarious.

Nintendo may be greedy at times, but they're not stupid. They know their audience better than we do.

  13. My tinfoil hat says Retro not only did this, and had been done for sometime given how it was a stealth drop, but they're working on, or have worked on remastered the rest of the trilogy in prep for Prime 4 coming out later on.

My other thought is this is more of a test bench for the devs as most of the original staff are no longer there.

I'm personally excited for this as it's clearly not a simple rush job. It looks like a nice balance between what most remasters are, and a full on remake. Geometry is clearly updated from the original, on top of all the lighting, textures, and shadows. There's some actual work being done here. And on top of that, they're providing all the different control options from Classic, all the way to conventional dual analog, which is great. I'll probably stick with classic myself, but may give the other controls a try.

This is how a remaster should be done.

I think there were a lot of :megaton: announcements BUT Nintendo played them off low key and then sandwiched them between meh stuff. Like they showed Metroid Prime remaster and then follow it up with some post-cognition detective game or show off some fashion game. :p

It's a very Nintendo way of doing things, for better or worse. On the one hand, launching it without much fanfare is a bit disappointing, but on the other, they know fans will eat it up regardless. I'm personally excited this was done, and can't wait for the physical release! :D

Looking at ddr5 prices they actually don’t look TOO bad. I know ram was dirt cheap for awhile so it’s more now but 32gb of ddr5 6000 for $150 or so seems fine?

Guess it means getting some DDR4 3200 memory for my rig would be cheap, no? :p

I may be dead in terms of no real upgrade path (LGA1200 mobo), but it's not to say 11th gen Intel is "slow."

    Can’t you do ddr5 motherboard/ram though?

I'm spit-balling here, but maybe with the Software he's using DDR5 doesn't provide any real advantage, and you're better off using high amounts of ram to compensate?
