I've never played a Ys game so is it ok to just hop into the newest one?

(I know the giveaway is over but just keeping the good vibes going :p )

Ys 8 is the best, but it's also the beefiest. Most of the games can be beaten in 20 hours max. Ys 8 takes like 50+ hours. I would recommend starting with Ys 7 or Memories of Celceta to see if you like it. Oath in Felghana is the only one that I think is actively shitty, the rest are fun. But I wouldn't start with Origin, I&II Chronicles, or Ys 6. Make sure you like the gameplay format before you dive into those. The games kind of play like a super fast-paced Secret of Mana. The bosses in the earlier games pretty much turn into bullet hell, and they can be super hard.

Also the games don't really have much connecting plot. Some characters show up in multiple games, but it's not a big deal. The general premise is "Adol gets into some shit," you don't need any backstory. There is a technical chronological order, but it really doesn't matter.

I really should get into this series. I love Falcom.

It's honestly one of my favorite franchises. I haven't finished 9, but I've played every other game. Some of the earlier ones can be really, really hard, so be aware of that. If you want to jump into the series, I would recommend starting with Ys 7 or Memories of Celceta. They're relatively short (20 hours or so) and will give you a good idea of the gameplay. Ys 8 and 9 are much bigger.

Also the series has the absolute sickest music. Ys 8 might have my favorite JRPG soundtrack of all time.

The game is pretty outstanding. It’s a shame it got completely ignored during awards(for whatever the fuck they’re worth anyway)

to be fair - gameplay-wise, it's not very deep. I couldn't in good conscience recommend it for GOTY compared to something like Baldur's Gate 3. The game claims to be an RPG, but it really isn't. You don't have much agency over anything. Even which house you choose in the beginning or whether you use the unforgivable curses barely ever matters.

That being said, the way they brought Hogwarts to life is nothing short of spectacular. The game is worth playing just for that alone if you've ever been a fan of Harry Potter, and it's still a pretty good game on top of that if you haven't. I've been considering giving it a replay recently.

If it will be about the same total runtime as season 1, I'm not sure why they would skip anything - not every scene has to have a "point" so unless they are stupid, ignoring anything from season 1 except nips and tucks would be silly since they have the runtime to fit it all in. Why do you think they won't?

I guess I mean I fear they won't just devote time to silliness. My point was that in the original, there were entire episodes that were decidedly NOT really about anything. We just spend time getting to know the characters. When you only have 8 episodes, I feel like those moments might get sacrificed. That happens a fair amount in modern binge TV.

That's a surprise, but I guess that means they won't be cutting anything.

Yeah, the question is more how things are going to be edited. The original series was formatted for 24 minute mostly self-contained episodes, while the Netflix series will be 8 hour-long episodes. That means the stuff from the filler episodes is likely gone, but what are they going to replace it with? They have to fill the runtime with something.

The Tales of Ba Sing Se was a filler episode, but was also the best episode (and incidentally it was also an episode the original creators had basically nothing to do with, which is one of the reasons I'm not necessarily worried about their lack of involvement)

I think it has the looks, but I'm still uneasy about this adaptation. The thing that actually gives me hope is One Piece. I'm not aware of the productions having anything in common beyond Netflix, but it did show that a goofy animated show can make a successful transition. However, One Piece had the benefit of being a pretty messy story that they were able to edit down and improve pretty significantly (IMO). Avatar is already paced pretty well, so I can imagine it feeling a bit more rushed.

Guess we'll find out soon enough.

The runtime of the Netflix series will actually be slightly longer than the first season of the original series. So if anything the question is how they're going to draw things out.

Yeah I was just thinking how they need to completely rework the way their algorithm works because it’s completely broken in 2024. It needs to push all the AI generated shit out or it’s going to be useless as a search engine. Maybe they can use AI to detect the AI. It needs to somehow prioritize human written material.

If they don’t step it up I think it could be a good time for a competitor to figure it out and step in. Google originally became popular because its algorithm was simply better than the competition. I think that’s something people will be drawn to again if presented with it.

I mean... I wasn't joking about bing porn searches. I've found videos with the barest of search criteria. It's like the engine read my mind

  7. I mean the search engine. IE what they initially did.

I can't find fucking anything anymore. Any time I'm doing research for something, whatever I'm actually looking for is on like page 3 (if it even shows up at all) behind all the ads and sites gameifying the system.

At least bing lets you search for porn videos.

Can confirm! I went to a nearby sandwich shop yesterday (Snappy's, if you know it, over on Ankeny and SE 6th) and when I told the guy I was glad they were open, he said "Yeah, after a week of being closed we had to be."

The ice is just so thick, there's plenty of it left even after it got up to 40 today. I'm just glad I never lost power in all of this; some people on r/Portland were saying they were without power for nearly a week and even inside their house it got down into the 30s (when it was closer to 0 outside). :s

I bartend at George's Corner on Interstate and Killingsworth a couple nights a week. It was funny. We probably didn't need to close on Tuesday because it was just a bit of powder snow, but we did anyway. Friday, when the sidewalks are a fucking death trap, it was like "ehhh, figure it out, capitalism go brrrr"

  9. We're in classic Portland mode. It snowed on Tuesday, then it rained and got cold enough for all the rain to freeze. Like the best way to get around on foot is on ice skates. Initially all of the business are like "we take the safety of everyone seriously, don't travel, stay home if you can," but after 3 days it's "fuck it YOLO, please come spend money."

  10. This morning, I woke up with practically every muscle in my body feeling like I just did an intense workout. My back, my arms, my neck, my abs, even my legs a little bit all feel like I did some major weight lifting yesterday. But I didn't. I did inventory at work, went on a date, and took a nap yesterday.

I remember this happening once before, where I had a dream in which I was running up a hill of sand. I woke up with my legs being sore as fuck. This is like that, but I don't remember any dreams.

  11. It just started raining here, hopefully all the snow will be melted by tonight (right now it's all ice). Everywhere is closed, including my work. It sucks. Fuck the cold. Put me in a swamp any day.

  12. Speaking as someone who has an Elder Scrolls tattoo...

... GTA 6. Bethesda hasn't made a great game *since* Skyrim. Fallout 4 was alright, not great. I haven't played Starfield yet, but most people say something similar. On the other hand, I LOVED RDR2.

Oh yeah, same here Nokra, audio freezes & repeats a lot lately even I am noticing. Looking back, Youtube should have stayed on it's own & grown in lieu of the Google buyout.

I think Google and Pornhub are the only companies on earth with enough potential server space to host something like YouTube.

It was like 40 last night, super cold.

In my opinion, anything under 40 I may as well be in Siberia.

Though one thing I have noticed -  when it gets below 30 it gets so cold that I don't want to smoke cigarettes anymore because my fingers get too cold. So maybe if I do want to quit smoking I should move to Pittsburgh for a year.
