oh damn, I forgot to post the interview itself. It’s been a crazy day, still process the whole thing. It doesn’t feel real. I was listening to it at the gym and it’s such a good, honest interview. He explains his rationale his style of comedy that he does and what he considers to be the perfect joke.

Thanks for sharing! Ended up listening to the whole thing, really great interview.

  2. Seemed weird, but the wife and I actually cancelled Netflix and renewed HBO max for another year. Just weren't watching Netflix as much. We have Amazon Prime and Hulu from other subscriptions, no cable, also Disney+. Seems like a rotation of streaming from here on. Disney+, though limited content keeps me engaged as there's been almost weekly Star Wars or Marvel content.

Only so much content one can watch, seems like if you wait long enough shows rotate around the different vendors too.

I think the issue is that we have no proof that plaque causes the harm, or that removing it will help. Many drugs work and we don't fully understand why, and that's good enough to get them approved. But this drug should work (theoretically) but doesn't, so it's not good enough to be approved.

A good comparison would be between Multiple Sclerosis and Vitamin D. We know that people with MS have reduced VitD levels. Is it caused by MS? Or is it a symptom of having MS? Many people, despite any evidence to the former, take huge amounts of D3, hoping it will help their MS. At least in the case of D3 it is cheap, readily available, and in reality, everyone probably needs more VitD than they get. But there is no evidence it works, even though we know low levels are associated with MS.

The only thing that matters is results, and if this drug can't show that it's helpful at all (and in fact, has strong side effects), then it should never be approved. It's like, here is the entire thing distilled in terms of how it should be:

Drug Company: This drug removes plaque.

People: That's awesome! Does removing plaque improve Alzheimer's?

    Drug Company: No

    FDA: DENIED

Hopefully insurance companies and governments deny coverage for this. Unfortunately, that will likely mean people pay out of pocket in Mexico and Russia (or the US) to get their own private supply that does nothing, but still bankrupts them.

Unless there's big rebate dollars on it (Likely will be), I think most health plans will not have this on their formulary. Even with big rebates, Fully Insured plans aren't going to want to pay for it to get some back in rebates, and large enough self-insured payers are going to want this off of their coverage. It'll likely just be small plan sponsors who get forced to cover it as someone. For most, good and bad, only rich people who can pay out of pocket will get it, or not rich people will go bankrupt paying out of pocket because they're understandably desperate. Pretty crappy of FDA to pass the buck to insurance companies to not needlessly cover and pay for a drug that has not been shown to have positive outcomes.

  4. Wasn't much interested in it, watched ep 1, got kind of hooked into it. Enjoying the world building. Worth a try if you're looking for something new and interesting.

Only thing I will say is it my hit a little too close to home with the whole virus piece of it. I'm also a fairly new Dad so the first episode hit me hard too.

  5. I may be the only one here,... I was kind of meh to the idea of The Eternals, similar to Guardians before I saw it.... but after the trailer for The Eternals, I'm sold. To me I just care about more "normal" super heroes, that's what I grew up watching/reading, and "god-level" super heroes didn't interest me. After watching the trailer, seems to be hitting similar MCU notes for me, I'll watch. Started reading up on The Eternals and the history.

Cloth masks are basically theater. I said this many months ago, but one of the unfortunate effects of the masking debate in America is it made people believe that doing risky behaviors was fine so long as they were wearing a mask of any sort. Whooops!

Wow, I knew masks weren't an impenetrable shield, but they only buy an extra 5 minutes!? I guess that's still helpful for running into a store with the public, but for social gatherings it ain't going to matter... Distance and outside seem to be the biggest protections until you get the shot.

Why the fuck does he want a constitutional amendment for a new state?

I don't get this either. As far as I know, there is a process to add states which has been done in the past and it's not a constitutional amendment.

"I will only consider shooting the basketball if it's done blindfolded, balancing on a unicycle, and on fire." You either support it or you don't why only support it if it's done through a much more difficult process. I don't get it.

  8. Akili’s therapeutic video game will be tested as a treatment for Covid ‘brain fog’

    Quote

Akili, which made history last summer by earning regulatory clearance for the first video-game based therapy, now plans to test if its software can help adults suffering from Covid “brain fog.”

    ....

    ....

“The technology that we have at Akili is not very specific to one disease area,” Anil Jina, the company’s chief medical officer, told STAT. “It basically improves attention control, which is one of the aspects of cognition, and that is part and parcel of many different disorders.”
He said that while childhood ADHD made sense as an early commercial target, independent investigators have done many small studies on the underlying technology’s efficacy in treating adults for a range of cognitive conditions, including dementia and mild cognitive impairment.

And my parents said Video Games were bad for me

No.  Fuck it. Do not feel bad. We all need it

Don't be a line jumper, it's wrong. Yes we all need it, but there's people who need it more than you right now (likely, I don't know your particular situation). If you can work from home, if your young and healthy, are in a situation where you can limit your risk, then do the right thing and wait your turn. It's been 12 months, we'll all have it in another month or two.

Requiem For a Dream did infinitely more to convince me to never do hard drugs in 2 hours than years of health class could even hope to accomplish. They should really show that movie in schools.

After watching Requiem for a Dream well geez almost 20 years ago now... I said that was one of the best made films I've ever seen, and I never want to see it again. It's so good, but it's soo good at making you unsettled and yes, staying away from addictions for the rest of your life. So powerful.

Glad to see Irreversible on the list. One of my top movies, but haven't watched it in years. Love the cinematography in it, not one visible cut throughout the whole film, which is even more amazing because the film plays in reverse. That being said, it s a brutal film to watch, with two in particular scenes that are extremely hard to watch.

Enough for the whole of the US by Independence day? Sign me the fuck up

Awesome news, but there's a whole lot of the population under 18. I think it's likely kids don't start getting it until the fall, but timelines there have been pretty vague from what I've seen.

Huge mile stone to have adult population by summer, but still likely put the finish line a little bit further out.
