Kroc wanted to expand and work out a deal where he could be responsible for expanding. He does that, he's annoyed that requests take forever to get approved and then ultimately are not approved (I know the feeling), and he doesn't like his cut. So he goes into the real estate business and leases land to franchisees and vastly increase his fortunes, and by the time the brothers are ready to stop him, they can't because he's too big and they'd bankrupt themselves fighting him. So they get a lucrative check and a handshake deal that is never honored, they have to take down the MacDonald's name that they created, and Kroc creates a McDonald's across from the original MacDonald's and runs the brothers out of business.
