It's a good game.  I played it without knowledge of the first two, and it does a really great job of recapping the story in way that feels natural and cinematic.  The gameplay can be rough around the edges, and the shooting I found to be sluggish overall, but the environment and the atmosphere are really top-notch, and despite the awkward and stilted dialogue, it's an interesting and well-told story.  If you approach it with the understanding that it's an ambitious and creative but flawed game, you'll have a great time.

If you don't like the voice acting/dialogue switch it to the native Russian with subtitles. It adds a heck of a lot to the atmosphere.

  2. Not sure if it's just me that's changing but as I approach 40, it's getting harder and harder for me to get excited about new games. I still enjoy a good FPS now and then, and still enjoy good sequels to revisit favorites but everything new the past 5-6 years has really had that been there-done that feel. There are some exceptions (Last of us/Witcher 3/Horizon/God of War/Overwatch) but mostly meh.

That said, I've been playing some VR stuff on my buddy's vive and the good ones seem fresh. Which has prompted me to pre-order an index.

I guess this is the point where I remind people that lifestyle (live service) games are maximally repetitive by virtue of the kind of player they cater to. These games are victimized by the mere fact that people who aren't your typical gamer playing games for not more than a couple hours a week end up exhausting all of the available fresh content within days of release. These are games designed specifically for long term enjoyment, to be played over the course of multiple months, if not years. If you play any game of this nature (Destiny, Anthem, etc) like you would most single player games, you're going to be bored out of your mind very quickly.

Also, The Division 2 absolutely fits the bill for adopting a modern/near future militaristic sci-fi look and feel. More fantastical sci-fi games in the same vein already exist, or have we forgotten about Destiny 2 and War Frame already?

I'm probably guilty of this. I played the heck out of it. Was consumed by it and then after slogging through the world tiers just lost interest. When I think about games like this, I think Destiny really is the only one that's had legs for me because the moment to moment combat is so good and the enemy types vary. It rewards accuracy. However, where Division 2 fails (and this has been my main complaint since D1) is the spongy enemies. You basically need to use the same strats for all of them which is to cover,  chip away, and make sure you don't get flanked.

Now, if they'd have made the games combat a little more like R6, or wildlands then we'd be talking. That and release another survival mode.

Yes, it is completely unnecessary. Yes it is cool. Adding Atari games and the like is simply because Elon Musk is a gamer and a geek. I wouldn't expect the game to run well.

They actually run very well. Especially if you hook up a USB Controller. Keep in mind the Car has an Nvidia Pascal GPU in it (mostly for auto pilot) that can be leveraged for other things while the car is in park. If you haven't used a Tesla screen they are super responsive and smooth to use (pretty much on par with an Ipad).

So far, for me and my buying habits, they have been a good deal! I usually buy 2-3 games a year from each of the big publishers so I've actually "saved" about 60 dollars per provider of such a service.

Agree... and I'm not even talking about the $99 annual deal which I think is pretty solid for gamers that are definitely buying more than 1 of their games. Sales aside, if you play 2 of their full priced games you've broken even on that deal.

  6. I know I'm probably in the minority here, but I actually like these services. EA Premier has saved me a ton of $$. I sign up for a month, binge-play the games I want to play and then cancel. So instead of ~$50 for a new game I pay $15, play it, finish it, then cancel the service. It's also nice to try out  super media hyped games that release with mixed reviews (Anthem) without shelling out.

The other difference is that Ubisoft has been consistently improving themselves and their games support over the years, going from "lol, look at how bad & glitchy their games are" to releasing massive, feature complete and actually good games with continued support and amazing community interaction. Bioware and EA don't have this going on and based on the recent Kotaku article, I would say that it's safe to write off Anthem as another Fallout 76.

The one critique I have of UBI right now is that their games are a bit... samey. AC/FC/Division all seem to be built around stronghold capture with lots of POI's to hit. Great open worlds but they are starting to feel like cookie cutters with a different coat of paint. That said, what they've been putting out the last few years have been technically solid and well built. Now I'd just like to see them start branching a bit, maybe adding some narrative. Hopefully Beyond Good and Evil 2 starts something on that front.

How does half of a fucking thousand people indicate half the player base?  While I would say that a good chunk of the player base has probably put it on pause until things improve, that article is literally saying nothing.

For me, they got my money and I don't regret it one bit.  I'll be with them to the end, but I can easily play something else until they sort things out.

As for saying the game is too broken to fix?  What the fuck is that?  Do we have some super secret knowledge of how this game was developed to say such a thing?  Somehow I think not.

The Division is the poster child for why you shouldn't give up or drop support for something like this.  The parallels to what Massive went through on D1 are almost identical.  Fantastic and detail world? Check.  Fun gameplay? Check.  Incredibly complex systems that are a real challenge to have working properly and not have something broken? Check.  Lacking content and meaningful things to do?  Check.  Fucked up loot situation at launch?  Check.

If given the chance, they'll fix it and it will end up in a really good place.  I don't know how you can just say fuck it to 6 years of development cost and abandon it.

The difference with Division was that the publisher shoved the game out the door before Massive was ready. That's fairly well documented.

Looking at things we've heard from various sources it sounds like Anthem's problems are rooted from studio disfunction. I hope they turn Anthem around like the Division did, but I'm wouldn't predict it at this point.

  9. So I'm going on a trip with some long flights. Looking for some good games to play on the flight that are more engaging than solitaire or word puzzles. Since I'll be flying I have no idea if the airline will offer wifi at a reasonable rate or if it's fast/reliable enough to do any kind of online gaming so offline would be preferred. I'd imagine something turn based or slower paced would be good. Probably an RPG or strategy game.

    Thanks in advance.

The reviver hive is mostly about survivability since you will get jumped every now and then by an elite shotgunner who will wipe you out in short order. It will automatically deploy and revive you. Also, don't move as it revives you as you technically become invulnerable for about 5 seconds. This gives you enough time to pop armor and then roll out of the way. That and if you're in a group, you can revive others without putting yourself at risk. Start figuring out how you want to build your character and finalize that build by GS 500. Btw, GS 450 stuff is still viable in WT 5 so long as you're spec'd well.

I really like the large clip LMGs. Sometimes in a 4-man I'll carry 2. With Specialization perks and 100 round clips I'm practically and endless bullet hose. I carry Marksman primarily solo so I can grenade/headshot kill mechanical types sending drones and car bombs at me.

So far my favorite gun has been a 600RPM / 100 magazine with a perk that caused hits to have a chance to refill the mag.

For CP3 Solo you're going to want to build for the following:

    Crit Chance

    Crit Damage

    Weapon Damage

    Armor Regeneration /s

    Armor on Kill

    Useful Skills would be:

    Healing Chem Launcher

    Reviver Hive

    Useful Specialization would be:

Demolitionist or Survivalist. The former because the grenade launcher has amazing kill potential and the latter because incendiary grenades are great for crowd control.

Useful talents to go for, in no particular order, would be things like:

    Unhinged

    Breadbasket

    Killer

    Patience

    On The Ropes

    Safeguard

    Preservation

    First Blood

    Frenzied

    Strained

    Recharged

    Rooted

    Beserk

    Clutch

    Efficient

    Mad Bomber

Finally, you'll want to Mix and Match Brand Sets to maximize your damage output based on the weapons you plan to use/enjoy using.

As far as the best way to Gear Up? Farming landmarks in the Occupied Dark Zone or level 3 CP are good ways to farm. Your Gear Score is an average of everything you currently have equipped as well as what is in your backpack. If you want to move up fast, get rid of anything lower than your current GS.

Edit: if you get a goo gun healing mod that doubles its ammo, you have gained the ability to face tank tough enemies. Goo healing stacks, so you can drop 3 goo, stand up and blast away without a care in the world.

Also, if you wonder why I don't have elite damage up there, if you spec for nothing but that or have an incredibly high amount of it, you're going to have trouble with purple mobs as they are not considered to be elite despite being armored. You will underperform against them whereas elites get melted. Boosting Crit Damage, Crit Chance and Weapon damage will make you effective against everyone.

Thanks for this. I've been full demolitionist since specializations. While solo I usually run LMG/Marksman. LMG being something with a 100 round clip and Marksman being something high enough damage to 1 headshot kill things without armor. With a friend or small group I'll drop the Marksman and switch to an SMG. Definitely didn't know about GS being affected by what I'm carrying, not just what is equipped.

Since I've mostly been focused on just getting my gearscore up I haven't really been picky about specific gear perks/talents so far. I figured I'd start getting more picky once I got near/to the cap.

Skills-wise I've been using the flame turret (mostly for CC reasons). I've mostly stuck with the healing hive but I should probably try out revive.

  12. IMHO, Gamestop is going to be the next Blockbuster Video. It's going to take longer but the pattern will be similar. Areas with good broadband coverage are going to see more & more digital distribution (I haven't purchased a physical game in several years). Combine that with Amazon's shipping, Stadia, etc... and things are going to shift further away from anyone wanting to go to a store to buy games.

  13. The interesting thing for me is whether this game is able to turn around like the Division did. The games came out in a similar state... Very good core gameplay, cool world, great graphics, but buggy and with a rough end game. In Divisions case, if felt like the release product was more the case of a publisher pushing the game out the door before it was ready in addition to some beginner mistakes in regards to MMOish games than just a bad development effort.

Anthem's struggles seem to be more of a developer in disarray. Lots of engine and design disfunction, which I think giving Bioware's history are a little big harder to forgive. They've released some absolutely amazing games, they've released a somewhat successful MMO (SWTOR), and they've done lots of open worlds, rpgs, and shooters. So now things are going to be dependent less on the competence of the developers technical ability and more on whether or not they can be a functional development studio again.

The "World Events" are all over the place, but I already find myself skipping the majority of them as they already feel repetitive.  None of them introduce any exciting gameplay elements.

Save the hostage - Shoot at the enemies and clear like 2/3 waves of reinforcements.

Hostile Territory - Kill a few waves of enemies

Propaganda - Kill 3 waves of enemies

Control Point - Kill Guarding enemies then kill a few waves of enemies and boss

Supply Drops - Kill 3 Enemies standing near supply drops, kill 3 waves of enemies, open supply drops

Every single activity is the same, kill 3 waves of enemies with sometimes a heavily armored boss at the end.  They are just titled differently.  It's what I was getting to at the beginning,  if the character builds themselves don't feel drastically unique and different, I'm not sure End Game is gonna be what its hyped up to be if the gameplay doesnt feel all that unique.  So far the builds seem like they may have some potential, but I'll have to see.

I am excited for the Raid though as requiring 8 players I hope it introducing some cool new mechanics or puzzles that require teamwork.

I hope this doesn't sound too condescending... but this is just the basic open world PVE loop for the game, however with side missions / bounties / main missions / Darkzone / Exploring there's a lot more to it. Kinda like Event's in Destiny... they'll surely add more and the first few times they'll be fun but after that they'll get repetitive. Such is the MMO/MMO-lite genre.

Weirdly enough, I almost feel like Ghost Recon Wildlands had better/more detailed character models. That could just be because of the larger number of wearable items in Div2 though.

But the female faces look.. off.. for some reason. Like the eye are too bulgy or something. it took me a few minutes worth of tweaking to make my fem agent not look ugmo.

The character created was limited. The males are either clean shaven or have untold months of growth. Why no stubble?

Maybe I’ll find “stubble” in the world or unlock it with some challenge.

It better not show up as a mtx. If it does... oh well.

Honestly, I think this is just a general UBI issue across the board... outside of a few exceptions (main characters), the character faces in almost all of their games are just a little off. Doesn't matter if it's GR, R6, Division, AC. To me they just stand out more in games with cut scenes and character interaction because you're looking fairly close at them.
