That video made me realize that I might just not be interested in playing games with this level of violence anymore.  I don't really find the appeal in watching realistically rendered murder animations for 20 hours in a row.  I've played my fair share of extremely violent games, but the best experiences I've had in the past several years have eschewed violence completely.  I hope this game is really excellent and delivers on people's excitement for the franchise, but I think I'm out.

What I see in this game, is sadistic violence.  While I thought God of War was over the top, and I disliked the gruesome attacks on mythological creatures, I was able to disassociate somewhat from it.  In game like Assassin's Creed, the violence is more than I would like, but I am attacking a bunch of non-personified, copy-and-paste faceless drones.

What I have seen in TLOU2, feels more like the player is sadistically killing REAL individuals.  I have never felt that way while playing a game, and I don't think I want to.

I personally like that they're taking a more realistic approach with the violence, because violence is often portrayed as cartoonish and unrealistic in games. But not in this game, it looks brutal, dark and gritty as fuck. I know that's not everyone's thing, but that's part of why the game looks so appealing to me because despite the popularity of the original they're not toning anything down in the sequel to appeal to the masses. They're making the game that they want without caving to mainstream appeal, and I respect that.

damn Ellie became a violent bitch, huh.

Yeah, and I'm sure that there's a reason for it which we'll find out why when we play the game. June 19th can't get here fast enough.

While these games get some hate from some people, I don't think that they're hated by the mass majority. I understand the disappointment that some have with Red Dead Redemption II because I have it too, but I still like it for the most part. Days Gone and The Evil Within are both really good, and I haven't seen a lot of hate for either of them.

Being older this generation, I've not had as much time to play games (and in turn, play bad games) so I can't really think of any...maybe Zombie U? I had a great time with the game and it was the first Wii U game that I completed.

I have it (Zombi) for PS4, and really like it.

Agreed these seem like just mediocre to sub par games

Perhaps hate is too strong of a word for some of them, but I've definitely seen a lot of people hate on them, some more than others of course. While I acknowledge that some of them could be considered average, I don't feel that any of them are mediocre to subpar.

All of that is there, its just not handed out on a silver platter. From allows the players to run thru it for just the challenge or if one chooses to put in the effort they can decipher the story. It often requires one to do weird shit like read item descriptions and pay attention to environment details instead of watching cut scenes.

A good example of this fighting a black knight in Dark Souls 2, they can drop a halberd that the player can use. A player can pick it up , check the stats and equip it and move on, but if you take the time to read the description it gives you more insight to the knights and the world.

"Halberd wielded by knights who served the lord of light in a long-forgotten age."
"Even after their flesh was charred by flame, they remained as strong as ever, and stood watch, challenging visitors to their land."

I realize that From Software Soulsborne games offer stories in them that can be deciphered the way that you described, but that's not my preferred way of storytelling. I personally find it somewhat dull, and often confusing. I know that some people like that form of storytelling and that's perfectly fine, it's just not really my thing.

  4. The following current gen games tend to receive hate from a lot of critics and/or gamers, but I like them:

    Assassin's Creed Unity

    Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

    Darksiders III

    Dragon Age: Inquisition

    Fallout 4

    Final Fantasy XV

    Ghost Recon: Breakpoint

    Killzone: Shadow Fall

    Mafia III

    Mass Effect: Andromeda

    Mirror's Edge: Catalyst

    Need For Speed: Payback

    The Order 1886

    Rage 2

    Shenmue III

Are there any hated current gen games that you like?

I find a lot of these are super well made but I don’t like that I need to be “on” all the time. It’s a great challenge but I don’t think I like to be challenged in a video game this way. I understand that these games are great but don’t think they’re for me.

i think my biggest problem is I also dread losing a ton of progress in games so it gives me stress lol. Getting far and dying to something you’re trying to figure out multiple times is soul crushing to me and I’ll just put down the controller. I don’t really enjoy repeating an area several times in any game.

This is basically how I feel about the From Software Soulsborne games, they're essentially always on challenges with the only real goal of overcoming one challenge after the other without much else on offer. I like more from games than strictly overcoming a continuous set of challenges, I like entertaining stories, interesting characters, some occasional downtime and an incentive to keep pushing forward to see what's going to happen next in them beyond just seeing more of the world, enemies and bosses.

So both breakpoint and wildlands are ~$10 on the Epic store right now.

Are either worth picking up for someone that skipped them both? I see Wildlands has much better reviews, but I'm also wondering if time has made either better. I'd be playing solo, if that makes a difference.

Both are easily worth $10 each. Wildlands is one of my favorite games this gen, it offers a realistically detailed, massive and varied open world Bolivia packed with stuff to do. The story is somewhat thin, but it's a gameplay focused sandbox game similar to the Mercenaries games and is a complete blast to pick up and play. Breakpoint is similar in a lot of ways, but takes place on a fictional island, has sci-fi elements and is more story focused.

I like Wildlands a little more than Breakpoint because it's the better pick up and play and have a good time game, but Breakpoint is a good time as well offering more of a lone wolf action adventure feel to it. If you like third person military action shooters then you can't go wrong with either IMO.

If you come to terms with the fact that Andromeda's  story is utter shit, and are selective with what side quests you take on, you can enjoy it.  The combat is the best of all ME games

I liked the story. It's not as good as the original trilogy's, but I still found it to be entertaining. The game overall is really good IMO, and I don't get the hate for it. I know that it had a lot of issues right out of the gate, but it's a lot better now in its current post update state.

I still see Days Gone pop up a lot, just not on here. People seemed to warm up to it as a solid 7/10 'pretty alright!' type of game.

It was a 9/10 for me, it was one of my favorite games last year and is one of my favorites this gen in general. My only real issue with it were its performance issues, it needed a tad bit more polish. But otherwise it was a solid game throughout.

As for Ghost of Tsushima, it looks good but not great IMO. It looks like a typical third person open world action game, but with a feudal Japan setting and samurai theme. I'm not real big on games grounded in reality or based on historical accuracy, I tend to like them to have some fantasy, horror, or sci-fi elements in them to spice things up. Also, I tend to prefer playing as female protagonists in games. If I have to stare at a character's backside for hours at a time while playing then I prefer it to be a female's. ;) I'm much more excited for Assassin's Creed: Valhalla than I am for Ghost of Tsushima, but I'll still probably check it out when I can get it for cheap.

Thanks for bringing this game to my attention. I thought that it was just another Naruto fighting game (which I'm not into), but knowing that it's a 3D platformer with RPG elements interests me.

Looking at a lot of those games, its sad how few linear action games there are nowadays.

I wish B-tier games would make a comeback. Tired of indies just making pixel art side scrollers and free-to-play battle royales.

Make a good third person shooter or action game, give it 8 or 9 stages and sell it for $20 or $25 and i'm buying that shit all day long.

I agree. This gen has definitely seen a lot less B-tier games compared to previous gens. I'm not really into old school style 2D pixel art platformers these days because I played an overabundance of them while growing up, and I don't need every bigger budget game to be a 100+ hour open world experience.

you can tell that this is a labor of love and yet that love letter is incomplete. Animations are generally tolerable to solid, but enemy AI is horrid.  The hit box range verses the graphical representation is definitely off. There are a series of these rough edges and yet the game does inspire the desire to explore and push forward. The problem is that while handling the world mobs is clunky but totally doable, the bosses are, um, painful. Its not that they are ultra hard, they are just too clumsy to feel like you won through skill, but rather that it was a combination of luck, happenstance, and some input from you as well!

You have a mount and it might be the worst controlling mount in gaming history! No small feat! Also, the regular mobs are actually not dangerous enough. Its not that they don't do enough damage as most enemies can kill you 4-6 hits. Its just that they just sort of flail about and sometimes they connect whereas other times they do not. riveting! During the first boss fight the boss's weapon went clean through me and I took zero damage. Thanks for the freebie, malevolent being!

Basically, this game is a charming clone and its clear that the dev wants it to be special, but its going to be a few months until it is in good enough shape for most folks tastes. Consider this a Steam early access game and you'll be happy with what you are getting, especially for 20.00!

Yeah, the game did seem to come out before it was finished which is a shame since the issues that you mentioned do hurt the overall experience a bit. There's so much good about the game, it just needed some more fine tuning before release. I'm still enjoying my time with it since there's a lot to like about it, but the bugs, jank and overall lack of polish definitely take away from the fun factor.

    2 hours ago, Xbob42 said:

I saw a lot of reviews about how the combat is hot trash where you're overly-locked into animations in a way the enemies don't seem designed around, so that you just get your ass kicked and even when you don't, using your weapons simply isn't fun, so I've been holding off on it until I saw some improvements or contrary opinions.

The combat isn't THAT bad IMO. It might not be perfect, but I still somewhat enjoy it. I personally think that a lot of critics are being harder on the game than it deserves. While it has its fair share of issues, it's still a charming and fun fantasy action adventure experience if you can tolerate some shortcomings.

The following review is one of the more accurate ones that I've seen:

  15. Game: Decay of Logos

    Genre: Action adventure

    Developer: Amplify Creations

    Publisher: Rising Star Games

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC

    MSRP: $19.99 (digital only)

I've been playing Decay of Logos for a few days now, and I'm really enjoying it. The best way to describe it is a mix of The Legend of Zelda and the Souls games. It has the aesthetics and adventure feel of the Zelda games, and the challenge and design structure of the Souls games. It's not quite as punishing as the Souls games, but it's definitely more challenging than its colorful and cartoonish look might make you think.

It begins rather abruptly, and offers no real direction or handholding. There's no map, or quest markers. There are some stone statues in the environments that you can get some slight hints from and an occasional NPC that you come across that sheds a little light on things, but that's about it. The game is all about exploring, and discovery. You feel pretty much alone in the world other than for the enemies that are roaming everywhere. You also have an elk companion that you can ride and store things on, but it controls so clunky and poorly as a mount that going it on foot is the better option.

The gameplay consists of weak/strong melee attacks, ranged attacks (bow and arrows/magic), block (shield required) and dash. It takes a while before you acquire a bow, magic and shield, so you'll be using strictly melee weapons for quite some time. You start with a basic sword, and no armor. To gain weapons and armor pieces (head, chest, arms, legs) you need to defeat enemies, and find treasure chests. There are no shops in the game, so everything that you obtain (including potions and arrows) is either from defeating enemies or finding treasure chests. Both weapons and armor will break after extensive use and damage without any way to repair them, so you need to continuously get more throughout your journey. But it takes a long time for weapons and armor to break, so you usually find more before needed and you can store them on your elk.

The environments consist of fairly large and open outdoor areas, and more confined indoor areas like caves and ruins which are basically the game's dungeons. You're encouraged to explore everywhere to find key items to progress, and better loot.

While the game is action adventure, it has some RPG elements such as stats and leveling. However, there's no XP and I've just leveled after defeating a bunch of enemies. Stats go up the same way, but they will decrease if you die. If they get too low you will go into an injured state, and not be able to sprint. You need to rest at camps (the game's bonfires) to gain them back to where they were.

If you like Zelda and Souls games then this is something that you should consider checking out, because it's basically a mix of the two.

The only thing I have seen that I have disliked is the Main character. He looks and sounds like a fucking bitch, just like the DA:I human protag.

It seems like in most games that give you the option to choose between a male and female protagonist (you can choose the gender of your character in GreedFall) the male character is usually somewhat douche-y, so I almost always choose the female character when given the option.

I don't think this game will be much better than BbF, tbh, but that isn't bad IMO. What this studio needs is a bigger audience and then I see the games getting better.

The Technomancer was a big improvement over Bound by Flame, and this looks like a big improvement over that. I think that this might be the game that finally puts the developer (Spiders) on the map.

As you play there is this constant feeling like the game wasn't even halfway finished and yet they still released it.

From a content standpoint Bound by Flame feels like one of the most incomplete games that I've played, it feels like you start the game at the halfway point. It's like they made a few levels and then ran out of their development budget, so they went ahead and released it without including half of the content that they originally planned for it. That was my biggest complaint with it as I found everything else about it rather competent for a lower budget action RPG.
