At least cyberpunk is fun and interesting and plays well.. A beautiful world is useless when it's completely boring.

I agree. I personally like Cyberpunk 2077 more myself. While it might not be as polished, it’s more entertaining and fun to play IMO.

I’m fairly positive that I’m going to like the other open world games that came out last year (Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Immortals: Fenyx Rising, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Watch Dogs: Legion) more as well since they look more enjoyable to me.

I think that Red Dead Redemption II is a good overall experience, but as an actual game it’s somewhat dull to play IMO. While its story, characters and world are all topnotch, its gameplay is lacking when it comes to fun factor IMO.

As per usual, games don't have to be actually released in 2021 to be discussed/reviewed/critiqued, etc. in this thread.

I would hope not considering that we’re not even a full week into 2021 yet. :p

Heck, if you wanted to devote the entirety to 2021 to making a significant dent in your Steam backlog, then this is the thread for you!

The entirety of 2021 for me is going to be devoted to working on my massive PS4 backlog which I continue to add to due to all of the game deals and sales that are continuously happening.

I’m currently playing Cyberpunk 2077, and I’m about 60 hours into it now. I’m on the final act of the story, but I still have a lot of side stuff to do. As much as I’ve been enjoying it, I kind of want to wrap it up soon so that I can move onto something else.

The game is definitely not for everyone.

No game is, some just happen to come closer to appealing to the majority more than others.

I dont know about game of the year - but its absolutely the best open world game of the year. Nothing has come close the the depth and detail of this game.

It’s definitely detailed, but lacks depth IMO. Its core design and gameplay mechanics are fairly basic. Ghost of Tsushima is the best open world game of 2020 IMO, but I don’t consider Red Dead Redemption II to be a 2020 game anyway since it originally came out in 2018 and that’s when I played it.

One of the things I really appreciated about the Witcher 3 that isn't present as much in Cyberpunk was the environmental progression. Moving from Velen to Novigrad to Skellige made the world feel much more substantial than the relatively homogeneous Night City.

I agree, but The Witcher III is more of an adventure RPG that has you embark on an epic journey across the land similar to The Elder Scrolls games while Cyberpunk 2077 is more of a mission driven action shooter that primarily takes place in one big open city similar to games like Grand Theft Auto, Saints Row and Sleeping Dogs.

I dunno, there have been some stellar parts of the game that will certainly remain with me, particularly certain lines and story content. Is it The Witcher games? No, but it's so different it was never going to be. I don't forgive the bugs and jank, but this is still a game like few others.

Despite it not quite being the game that I was expecting it to be and it failing to meet my expectations, I’m still having a great time with it. I like its story, characters, world, gameplay, music, etc., and it’s packed with stuff to do. There’s a lot of exciting things that happen in it, and it’s hard for me to put down once I start playing. But unfortunately its bugs, glitches and jank hurt the overall experience, and are what I have a problem with the most.

Overall, Cyberpunk basically met my expectations. In comparison to TW3, I liked the gameplay and main story more but didn't like the world or characters as much. I put 106 hours into TW3, including expansions, and was sad when it ended. I have 56 hours in Cyberpunk and felt like that was about the right amount of time.

While I think that The Witcher III is a higher quality game overall, I’m enjoying Cyberpunk 2077 more since I like the futuristic sci-fi cyberpunk theme and gameplay/combat more. I’m 40 hours into it now, and I’m not ready for it to be over anytime soon. I’m doing just about everything that there is to do in it, so I expect it to take me a long time to complete.

It;s not just that for me though... coming off of The Witcher this game feels like a step BACKWARDS for them as a dev. Like it feels like to me, that they just had to polish what they had and put the game out. Game just feels like a mess of unrealized ideas and potential.

It lacks the same overall quality and polish of The Witcher III, and seems like it was made by a different developer IMO. Like I said before, it seems like something that Techland would have made. It has a Eurojank feel to it that The Witcher III doesn’t have, and a big part of that is due to the amount of bugs, glitches and jank that it has. But l also agree with you that it somewhat feels like a mess of unrealized ideas and potential. It seems like something that went through several different design changes during the course of its development.

It’s a rather ambitious game with an exciting scripted main storyline, and a ton of optional side content a lot of which is the quality of main mission content found in other similar games. So I can see how a game of this magnitude of storytelling, character interaction and sheer amount of gameplay content put into a large varied open world could be difficult to polish to a shiny sheen, but it still should be in a better state than it is considering the developer behind it and the amount of time that they worked on it.

this game did NOT live up to the hype or my expectations.

I don’t think that it did for anyone, it’s just not the game that we were all expecting it to be based on how CD Projekt Red presented it over the years. I’m still enjoying it, but it’s far from the game that I was envisioning it being.

My wife got me this game for Christmas on the PS4. Is this still a mess on the PS4 or is it stable now?

While it looks and runs a little better now on the PS4 compared to how it was at launch, it still has a lot of bugs, glitches and jank. Nothing that I’ve experienced so far has been game breaking, but its performance problems are still annoying and frustrating at times. I’m personally enjoying the game enough to put up with a lot of its technical issues, but YMMV.

@Phaseknox did you get Avengers? You should because you'd probably like it and its cheap right now. 29.99 bucks. I know you're primarily a single player guy and you can play the whole game in its entirety solo.

I haven’t gotten it yet, but I plan to soon along with some other new games that have also gotten cheaper recently such as Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Watch Dogs: Legion and Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

I just got Immortals: Fenyx Rising which is a game that I’ve been wanting, and I’ve been buying a lot of digital/indie games as well because the PlayStation Store has been having some great deals.

My backlog is burying me, and I continue to add to it. :silly:

The bug that annoys me the most is the "press button to draw weapon" prompt duplicating and stacking.

I've had 4 prompts stacked up at times.

I’ve had various prompts including ones for combat controls and driving controls stacked together taking up the entire right side of my screen.

I agree with you both. I started going fem since mass effect 1 and haven’t looked back

I’ve been gaming since Pong (yeah I’m old :p), and it was during the 16-Bit generation when I was in my 20s when I started preferring to play as female characters in games because not only were they usually more acrobatic, agile and fast which I preferred to their often more sluggish and tank-y male counterparts, but they were also more appealing to look at as well IMO.

I’ve chosen to play as female characters when given the option ever since, and games with female main protagonists have been some of my favorites over the years. It’s gotten to the point now where I don’t even really want to play games with male main protagonists anymore, and only want to play ones with female main protagonists or ones that let you choose to play as a female character which is thankfully becoming more of the norm.

There are of course games that have what I consider to be really good male main protagonists such as Jin in Ghost of Tsushima for example, and I like playing as them just fine. But in general I prefer playing as female characters in games, and I will often pass on playing ones with male main protagonists that I don’t care for and don’t want to play as.

What’s the verdict on male vs female voice actors.  I’m gem and think her voice acting is really good.

From my experience every game that allows you to choose between a male and female protagonist the female voice actor is always better, and it’s true for this game as well IMO. A lot of the time male voice actors for main characters in games (especially ones that allow you to choose your gender) seem to try too hard to sound like cool tough guys, but end up sounding douche-y lMO.

V's relationship with Panam feels like it develops much more naturally than with Judy. The romance with Judy is super abrupt and is mostly compressed into the last 10% of her quest line.

Can you have a romantic relationship with Panam if you play as female V? I’ve only played the main story missions with Judy and Panam so far, so I might feel differently about them when I play their specific side missions.

    5 hours ago, Moa said:

I played as female so can't speak much to the male VA, but I thought female V was great throughout the game. I don't know how much of the writing changes between the genders, but I feel like the dynamic between Silverhands and V makes a lot more sense when they're opposite genders.

Yeah, the game in general seems like it was designed with V being female and I can’t really picture the character interactions (especially with Johnny) working quite the same with V being male. I plan on playing the game again as male V just to see what the experience is like with him.

I’m working on the Judy side missions. I’m sad I can’t sex her up so I’m going to pursue panam even though she’s whiny af.

I’m at the same point in the game as you are, but unlike you I can have sex with Judy because I’m playing as female V. :p Judy is a cutie. <3

Everyone seems to really like Panam, but she doesn’t really do it for me for some reason.

I don't remember GTA V, RDR2, Spiderman, or any number of open world games having THIS amount of bugs particularly game breaking ones.

Because those aren’t Eurojank games like this is. :p This game even outdoes Dead Island when it comes to bugs, glitches and jank. It feels like a Techland game instead of a CD Projekt Red one.

here's an example of just plain jank that I haven't seen in a game of this size and budget in a long time. I just did (or attempted to do) a mission that involved me escorting a gang member to a meeting place for some folks that would get him out of town.  As we're leaving the hotel room he was holed up in, of course his gang mates show up to kill him. Now the way I THINK the game works is that I could either shoot it out with the gang or stealth my way out. I chose the latter, bypassing a fight with the gang altogether and taking an alternate route to his waiting car. Well the route I took must have been too much for the game's A.I. because once I reached his car undetected, not only did the NPC stop following me, he walked BACK to the enemy covered area we just escaped from undetected, alerted the bad guys and started getting shot. I then killed them all thinking that once they were dead, he then get in the fucking car and we could complete the mission... NOPE. He just walked back to the hotel room I found him in and started smoking completely ignoring my presence :| I couldn't progress the mission and I had to reload an earlier save so... yeah. Think I'm done with Cyberpunk for the day.

I also stealthily got to his car undetected, and he followed me to it but wouldn’t get in it once we reached it. I was like WTF? Thankfully he just stood next to it while I proceeded to kill all of the enemies, and then he got in it after they were all defeated. But if that’s not a bug, then it’s pretty stupid that you have to kill all of the enemies before he will get in the car especially if you reach it undetected.

What platform is everyone playing on and how is the game performing?

I’m playing on a PS4 Slim, and I’ve experienced quite a few bugs, glitches, jank and the game has crashed on me three times so far. But it does seem to improve with each new update, and there seems to be less issues the further that I get into the game.

wow was I disappointed with the montage. That was what I was looking forward to playing the most. I love those parts of the story. Instead the game just skips to the point where you are fully involved with everybody already. Like, I might be one one of the few, but I love long ass intros. Like, with Twilight Princess. I loved getting to know Link's life. People hate that it seems, but it really puts me into the world.

I agree, if people don’t like long beginnings in games that take their time getting the player invested into the story, characters and world then they shouldn’t be playing RPGs IMO.

I was expecting to play out all of the events that were shown in the early montage, but instead we’re just given a few quick scenes with goofy comedic music playing in the background.

But the real disappointment are the life paths IMO. You’re just thrown into them, and they’re extremely short. They were made out to be similar to the origin stories in Dragon Age Origins, but they’re nowhere near as in-depth and lengthy as those are. The game rushes you to the main game too quickly IMO.

While I’m definitely enjoying the game, it’s not what I was envisioning that it was going to be all of these years. I was expecting something more than what is essentially Deus Ex meets Grand Theft Auto.

I was thinking the same exact thing when I kept seeing reviews for Re-Reckoning mentioning how far we've come since the release of the original back in 2012. Current gaming seems like one step forward, two steps back as far as I'm concerned.

I guess the main story can be beaten in 10hrs if you rush through on easy. The main story is well over 10 hours long bpt to mention each characters unigue stories take up even more time.

And you do know that all of those multiplayer missions(minus the raids) can be played solo with AI companions made up of your other characters that you level up?

Sounds good, I'll probably buy it sooner rather than later after all.
