  1. I have a Hisense from a year and a half ago. It's great. Basically the equivalent of a mid to high end range of a Samsung, but half the price. OLED was off the table because my main room is way too bright, and the TV would be practically useless during the day. It does 4k/120hz. Minimal input lag. Every HDR standard. I imagine I'll keep this one for a few years.

Have the Goemon games made it to Nintendo Online yet? I don’t remember which I’m of the games it was, but one was a 3D game more akin to Super Mario 64 and I wanted it so much - but this was in the day when PAL releases were literally years behind the US and Japan - or just never came out in general.

The first one on N64, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, was like a mix between a 3D platformer and OOT (though it came out a whole year before this). It's a great game with a lot of charm, though the translation is terrible and a lot of it makes no sense, but it's still funny. The emulation is notoriously tricky for this game, and considering the issues Nintendo has had with their 1st party titles, not sure how well this game would fare. The sequel, Goemon's Great Adventure, is a 2.5D sidescroller closer to the SNES games. Another great game that is really well polished.

  3. Love the Goemon games. Would love to see Konami do anything with this franchise, even if it's just a collection. Most of the games never left Japan, and some of those PS1 games are even hard to find ROMs of. Doubt they would bother translating them though. I'm really surprised the DS game never came over here considering the install base for quirky titles.

    This game looks cool though.

  4. I really love all of the little flourishes to everything you do. The text, the sound effects, visual cues, animation touches... it's all a very slick and a creative take on Mario. Love the direction they're taking this, and not just playing it safe with the "New" series. I think they realize they can't just make straight platforming 2D Mario games anymore, since Mario Maker more or less makes them irrelevant, so they're really playing with lots of twists and unique spins and items. Looks awesome.

The only game on the horizon that could possibly be anywhere close to this is Sea of Stars. It's even composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. But even if it is half as good as CT it'll be a hollow victory. But who knows, I could be pleasantly surprised

Mitsuda is only a guest composer doing a handful of tracks. Still, the game has a lot of potential.

  6. I haven't played a single Souls-like, not even the good ones like Nioh. Most of them just seem like they're missing a crucial element in one way or another that the From games have. I watched some streamers play this one, and the gameplay looks pretty good, but the world just felt uninspired. It just seems too ambitious for their budget and it feels lifeless.

I should just give the demo a try though. If they can nail the gameplay, it could be at least fun to play.

  7. I've played about 20 hours of Fallout 3 and 20 hours of Skyrim, and that's it for Bethesda RPGs. I like the idea of them, but just get bored with the execution. And honestly, those games would be better off without any combat. I think I'd rather just explore and do menial tasks rather than deal with a half-assed combat system. Starfield looks different though, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Where did they say any of that?

What do you think being anti-woke means?

    From their bullet points:

    Quote

Discriminating against white people is racism

How many dog whistles do you need? These are crotchety white men upset with the changing landscape in America. And it's not just the diversity, it's the push for equality and equity that really gets their blood boiling.

A year spent on polish; something you just won't see for Western AAA games.

I suspect there’s more to this than polish. I would guess this was targeting the Switch Pro, and when Nintendo scrapped that for the OLED, they moved release dates around to better extend the life of Switch. That original trailer looks noticeably better than the final product, which basically just looks like BotW graphically.

That this is news shows how weird things have gotten.

He is participating in in a con that leftists don’t approve of. That’s basically it. He hasn’t actually done anything, anything bad, just going to con.

its not even a gaming con, apparently. It’s for authors.

    Why “BasedCon”?

In internet parlance, “based” means something like “in touch with reality.” Based behavior is the opposite of social justice activism, which is about meaningless virtue signaling and beating up strawmen. Some based beliefs include:

    • Men cannot give birth
    • Guns don’t kill people; people kill people
    • A fetus is a human being
    • Socialism has failed everywhere it’s been tried
    • Discriminating against white people is racism

BasedCon isn’t about pushing any particular ideology, but honest conversations have to start with a shared understanding of reality. If you think people with a certain skin color can’t be racist or you expect people to use made-up pronouns when talking about you, you may want to do a reality check before coming to BasedCon.

Leftists don't approve of? This just seems like a miserable group of white men more concerned about bigotry and trending culture wars than the fantasy/sci-fi con they're running. Ah yes, women having bodily autonomy is just another overreaction by the left.

  11. Still OOT.

But I need to replay some of the 3D Zelda's again. I've played both Skyward Sword and Wind Waker recently enough to know they're not my favorite, but I need to revisit Twilight Princess and Majora's Mask. Majora's Mask is likely the only candidate that could trump OOT for me.

The 2D games are good, but not my favorite.

  12. Don’t really want to see remakes.

I enjoy the BotW style games, but I prefer OoT Zelda. Honestly, I’m fine with the open world, I’m just not a huge fan of the focus on basically crafting your own experience. I want unique dungeons, unique items, and don’t want to have to puzzle solve every minor thing I come across. Like I just want to swim across a lake, don’t make me build some contraption for a simple task. Also, Elden Ring ruined horse riding in every game to the point I’m resentful to games that don’t control like that.

  13. Hoping this one immediately grabs me more than BotW did.

Got BotW day one, but dropped it pretty early and didn't finish until like 2 years ago. Kind of ironic considering I'm a huge Nintendo/Zelda fan. Well, hopefully Amazon delivers it early tomorrow.

And it's funny, I just built a new PC, but I haven't even considered emulating Switch games. :mthinking:

“it’s gotten quite big” is kind of the last thing I want to hear from this team but we will see!

    My thoughts exactly.

Hollow Knight already went far beyond a reasonable length for a Metroidvania. I just hope they can make traversal, combat, and item discovery actually exciting. Still, I'll be there day 1.

  15. Console wars aren't as prevalent anymore because there's unlimited options to play games and on almost any budget, AND the industry grew up because the primary audience isn't exclusively kids and teens anymore.

  16. Pretty cool. I've definitely seen a lot of emulation handhelds. Seems like I come across a new one every week.

I have the GPi Case from Retroflag. It looks and feels close enough to a Gameboy which is really what matters to me. Sure, I could get a cheap "Switch" style handheld for emulation, but I'm more interested in at least a semi-authentic experience. I only play GB/GBC/GBA and GameGear games on it though.
