SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Former Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson began his campaign Tuesday to unseat New Mexico’s junior Democratic senator, seeking political opportunity in the space between Democrats and voters loyal to President Donald Trump.

Johnson, a former two-term governor of New Mexico, was added to the state’s list of Senate candidates as final paperwork was being filed with election officials.

In an alternate universe where he actually wins, who do you think he would caucus with?

30% undecided means the changes in this poll are going to be large in the next two months.

Yeah.   I still think Johnson is a long shot, but he was an incredibly popular Governor, and has drawn support from Republicans, independents, and even a number of Democrats.  If he can key in on his socially liberal policies like marijuana, gay rights, immigration, and abortion, he might win over more Democrats and independents.  Would it be enough to win a three way race?

It's possible, yeah. For all I know, the undecideds will go the other way and some of his support will be siphoned, but it's easier for independents to win Senate races as we have way more instances of this, including two currently in the Senate. :p

Murkowski was effectively an independent as well in the 2010 election.  She had to run as a write-in candidate in that year due to a Tea-Bagger winning the GOP primary in Alaska.

Would he be caucusing with the enabling gop Senate, or have a few stones and stand against the president? My guess is he would Jeff flake it up.

He doesn't have to caucus with anyone, to be fair.  Yeah, if he didn't caucus he would be pretty much barred from any committee positions, but he would still be voting on bills.  If the Senate is otherwise split, his vote would be pivotal in almost all circumstances, making him exceptionally powerful.  Democrats would be lobbying him for support on socially liberal legislation, and Republicans would do likewise with fiscally conservative legislation.

The only legislation that matters is on appointments that require Senate confirmation. There will not be any socially liberal legislation that stands a chance of passing. So he's basically a Republican.
