I really do have to wonder just how critical was the cash flow situation at Zenimax for them to agree to this buyout.

I remember reading plenty of stuff that basically said Fallout 76 was them kind of going "we need something to make money NOW," which is why we didn't hear about it until mere months before it was released.

A publisher is just a group of developers who also owns the IP.  Zenimax/Bethesda was available, IMHO, largely because the vast majority (maybe, all) of their output over the last 5 years has been a commercial/critical disappointment.

Doom Eternal earned $450 million since March 2020.

Not enough for Microsoft talk down the asking price significantly.  They paid a hefty amount.

Going by history, and adjusted for inflation, they paid more money for Bethesda than Gearbox, Namco, Bioware, Insomniac, and Codemasers went for all combined.

Absolutely - however, that valuation price is based on the expectation of future cash flows, not necessarily the current cash flow environment.

Which is still fundamentally true for all those acquisitions.

But it's not equal circumstances here.  Microsoft really wanted to beat that Games Pass/console war drum with this type of move.  That's why Bethesda got the price they did.  I don't believe it was any sort of desperation move on their part.  More of Microsoft being an "offer you can't refuse" kind of buyer.

I don't know if Microsoft has shown, in recent history, that they are capable of making top-tier games (outside of Forza for racing fans).  I think it would be awesome for Bethesda to return to their past glory.

What's recent?

They postponed Halo to improve it, that will be fantastic when released.

Outside of that there is:

  • Gears of War
  • Flight Simulator
  • You mentioned Forza
  • Minecraft still seems popular, and that Minecraft Dungeons people seem to enjoy
  • Ori

Fable and Perfect Dark are on the way, safe bet they'll sell well.

All of these make bank

It wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft tried to do some kind of Game Pass thing on the Switch. They're already releasing games on Steam, and Nintendo isn't necessarily a competitor for them the way Sony is.

I do wonder if they'd release games on PS5, but charge full price for it. Like, "you could buy this on PS5 for $70, or you could just subscribe to Game Pass" or something. They win either way. Depending on what they put on Game Pass.

MS has said over and over that Sony is not there competition

Any company with (or planning for) a games library subscription service not included in Games Pass is technically competition to it.  Anyone producing a mainstream console is competition to Xbox.

At the very least, we're all the sheep they extort multiplayer paywall fees from.  They're all in competition for that dollar. :p

I didn't really follow this but as a fan of Prey, I assume this means it won't be a patch of any sort for PS5 if Bethesda is going all in on Xbox or how does this work?

FPS boost isn't a patch for the game, it's the system level process Xbox is using for some BC games, similar to Auto HDR.  So PS5 won't be getting the boost, but the faster loading I'd assume is possible.

Oh okay thanks. I assumed it was a patch.

I understand the disappointment from some people that Bethesda will no longer be publishing on Sony platforms.  I also understand the anger at Phil Spencer for his apparent turnaround on his belief on "exclusives" -- but didn't anyone really believe what he was saying at the time?

However, Bethesda does not really make that many GREAT games.  Skyrim was 2011, Fallout 4 was 2015 and Doom was 2016.  Yes, there have been some other good games in the interim (Wolfenstein series, Doom Eternal, Dishonoured series, and maybe Rage 2 and Evil within).   But this isn't like they are taking FIFA, Madden, CoD, GTA or Assassin's Creed away...

I'll admit I have a different opinion on what a "big deal" is.  Buying Xbox, Sony, Nintendo, Activision Blizzard, EA, Ubisoft, Valve, Roblox, Epic Games, Rockstar/2k, Riot and arguably Square-Enix would all be a big deal.

The only time I can think of a publisher being purchased by a console manufacturer was in the mid-90s when Sony bought Psygnosis -- but I may be missing one somewhere

In terms of developers:

Sony purchased Insomniac games in 2019 -- they had a top 10 selling game in 2019, and a top 20 selling game in 2020.

Sony purchased Sucker Punch Games in 2011 -- they had a top 10 selling game in 2020.

Sony purchased Naughty Dog in 2001 -- they had a top 10 selling game in 2020.

Were Elder Scrolls online, Elder Scrolls Blades, Elder Scrolls Legends and Fallout 76 successful?

You are clearly lost.

Zenimax is responsible for many of the best games of the last decade, the own fucking ELDER SCROLLS, FALLOUT, AND DOOM. The next ES is in development, Starfield is upcoming.

Seriously, all I hear from you is nonsense. People were upset because they make amazing games people love.

"EVIL WITHIN FANS REJOICE. The microsoft gamepass version of TEW1 is basically a remaster."
They Added
- first person mode + FOV option
- Infinite ammo mode
- Icons for lantern/sneaking in first person view
- Low/Medium options for Camera Bob
- The stamina has been adjusted, you can now run for 5 seconds at default stamina(was originally 3 seconds)
- All DLC Included
- Separate Achievement List from Xbox
- The game also feels less janky and smooth. definitely worth getting!

Much like my question in regards to Prey, I assume this whole deal means they won't be patching any of the PS versions I guess? I have quite a few games by them that I was really hoping would see a PS5 patch or edition or whatever, I have a feeling that's not happening.

I don't know how much you want to believe it but this is what someone wrote on the steam forums for this game:

Quote

I asked Microsoft support if this update for the evil within would come to GOG and steam and they assured me it will. I also asked them if they could contact square enix to say if they could update nier on steam too and they said they would try.

Some worries calmed at least.

So if it's true maybe they patch the Playstation version too. 🤷‍♀️

No clue. I think it would benefit Microsoft to put out great updates to the Bethesda games to get people hyped for the next game in the series. Please make Evil Within 3 happen

I'm actually quite the fan of The Evil Within so I'd love to see a full update. I do have it on Steam actually from one of those $2.99 type sales so that'd be great.

Also I think I'm secretly just butthurt about not having this cool upgraded version of Prey :salt:

yeah, sure was a big deal when Sony bought studios that exclusively made games for them already. Definitely bigger than a publisher that primarily published major games on every platform that now will only be available through the MS/Xbox ecosystem.

Someone else already posted in this thread... but really the newest updates to Prey were more enhancements for backwards compatibility on Xbox rather than direct Prey updates.

No I know, I appear to just have general not-on-PS5 saltiness going.

So should I just go ahead and play Prey on my Xbox one x? I downloaded it off gamepass and from what I'm gathering there isn't any performance boost for the new consoles.

Those load times....damn. If you have not played either game, you should. Both are great
