Chuck Schumer comes out in favor of decriminalizing marijuana (AKA: full Democratic control means this will be a reality)

Recommended Posts

People act like alcohol prohibition was was some insane old-timey thing we have no modern precedent for, but everyone's been living through an even more crazy prohibition our entire lives.  It's a start.  Some psychedelics and stuff like MDMA will hopefully be legalized at some point.

Centrist Democrats are pushing House Democratic leadership to pull legislation expected to reach the House floor next week that would decriminalize marijuana at the federal level.

It could fizzle.

Quote

"There are some policy concerns with the bill itself — the bill goes far beyond legalizing marijuana," the aide added. "But that is ultimately the main concern, is the timing of this."

Right now the problem is timing, next the issue will be the policy or some minor element of price reform or justice that they just can't stand for. These people are fucking useless.

Also, I really don't understand why house Dems don't just do what house republicans did back in the day when "repeal Obamacare" was a thing and just vote, vote, vote, vote on the same bill over and over and over and over again with regard to covid relief. Or even slightly different bills, so they can say "we've passed x number of bills, the senate has passed none" or something like that. They don't do any shit for show!

That’s a great point. If the GOP can vote to repeal the same law 40 times, why can’t the house take the time to vote on descheduling just once?

...But don't realize it's all political, and this isn't the west wing, and repetition, repetition, repetition is what voters get, it's what trump innately understands, just fucking do it!

Seriously, the ads write themselves! "We've passed a dozen relief bills, all while trump and Mitch's senate have passed nothing!" That the details muddy this situation are irrelevant, it puts them on the defensive in having to explain why nothing has gotten done, and the line "the Dems are playing politics/stopping us from passing a single bill in our chamber" rings hollow when you've got a dozen bills passed from one chamber that the Dems control! It really seems like they're allergic to playing politics despite working in a political institution, mere weeks before an election!

Like you read the article and you'd think that the house can't work on covid relief, government funding, and the MORE act at the same time. These people are unbelievably stupid. The senate is the hurdle, they haven't even passed a bill.

Flip control of the chambers and the House GOP would be sending bills for Schumer to sit on every single fucking day so they'd have something fresh to yell about on Fox News on a daily basis.

Now, now. We can't be "playing politics", we're the Serious Party, we don't "do" politics. We're just here to govern.

Again, how many times did the GOP vote on an Obamacare repeal from 2010-2014?

There's much support for this in Congress across the spectrum in the Democratic Party.

Quote

“In about two weeks, the conversation has gone from 'no problem' to people now doing a stutter step, maybe trying to … avoid this vote altogether,” said Rep. Lou Correa (D-Calif.), a co-chair of the moderate Blue Dog Coalition and a strong supporter of cannabis legislation. “[It] should have been a non-partisan vote, support on both sides of the aisle.”

Quote

“If you're trying to punt it as a result of a political calculation, I disagree with that calculation,” said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), a co-sponsor of the bill. “This is an enormously popular policy — not just for our base, but it's also very popular amongst certain parts of registered Republican voters and independent voters. I think this is a win-win-win policy, and I think that we should be doing this before the election.”

Quote

Political strategists say that while each House race has its own dynamics, moderates should see the MORE Act as a way to turn out both their Democratic base and undecided independents and not worry about how it plays to voters worried about the “defund the police” movement.

“If you're already motivated on the [idea that] the thundering hordes are coming over into your suburbs to take away your wife and imprison you in a socialist hell, I'm not sure being for [marijuana] is going to add any fuel to that fire,” said Joe Trippi, a Democratic strategist.

Quote

Sal Pace, a former Colorado House minority leader who now is a consultant focusing on the role cannabis plays in political races. He said targeting voters who care about cannabis helped increase turnout during now-Colorado Gov. Jared Polis’ 2018 campaign, which he worked on.

“If a candidate is talking about cannabis in an effective way, and they're running against someone who is not pro-cannabis legalization, that issue can be used to turn out young voters,” Pace said.

Quote

“This should be seen as a prime opportunity to address a form of systemic racism,” said Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), pointing out that the number of co-sponsors on the bill has jumped from 87 to 111 in the last two weeks.

Quote

Both Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) and Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) argue that taking the unprecedented step of passing legislation to decriminalize marijuana — even if the bill will not pass the Senate this year — would encourage their base and increase Democrat turnout in key Senate races this year.

“There's a moral urgency in this I think a lot of voters understand — and that this is a motivating issue for them — especially for younger voters,” Booker said. “I know that everything's through a political guise, but I think no elections are going to turn based upon voting for something that is all about restorative justice in this country.”

The Democratic leadership really sucks. Can we put these people in charge? You have Blue Dogs and progressives uniting on this; wtf do you really think is gonna happen?

The problem is they're going to replace her with someone equally shitty in all probability.

I mean that's the nature of the caucus, and I'll hate whomever they choose. But after ~15 years of her leadership it's time for someone new, her leadership just isn't up to the task anymore (but neither is the caucus so, ya know, not sure what will come of this all)

I’m used to disappointment, but this one stings since it was so damn close. AOC and others are correct. This would help Democrats at the ballot box. It’s really weird to not push this through.

A vote on the bill to remove federal penalties on marijuana will be delayed until after Election Day.
