So I was tempted to make a topic about this last week but ended up not because I had to digest the album first.

Sadistik is back and he seems to be more depressed than ever. But his loss is your benefit. Dig in before he kills himself because these songs are dark. Also, seems he raps over an Ulver song on "burning lakes" which I'm always for.

In the end I probably should have made the topic because I'm pretty impressed, was just baffled at what I heard the first time I listened to the album.

@thewhyteboar

I guess he released a music video for Burning Lakes :o

Denzel Curry - ZUU   8.5/10

Man this album is great. Took me a bit to get into, some of the beats are a little out there, but are still bangers. Curry's flow, aggression, its all still there.

Wish is the only song on the album that is kind of a slower? more relaxed song on the album, which works for me because its one of my favorite songs on the album.

I've somehow never really paid real attention to Pink Floyd but listening to Dark Side of the Moon on headphones for the first time recently has been quite the revelation honestly. Their lyrics especially are doing it for me and some aspects I just can't shake. Time especially is stuck in my head lyrically.

If there is any proof out there that God exists and inspires man, it's the guitar solo in that song.

That is a good fucking solo, very tasteful and lord knows solos can get tasteless quick.

I'm especially fond of the drumming and specifically drum production though on this album.

Machine Gun Kelly - Hotel Diablo 7/10 (I linked my favorite songs)

I typically don't like 75% of MGK's albums. Its usually two, maybe three songs stand out, this album is the exception though. It's like all of MGK's different rap styles mixed into one album and most of the songs just happen to be solid songs.

Hollywood Whore could 100% be a Linkin Park song. Definitely got that Nu-Metal feeling to it and MGK actually pulls it off really well. I would love to see him continue with this style as I haven't heard it a bunch from him. Its most likely the standout song from the album and it probably contests for favorite song on the album.

El Diablo, Floor 13, and Roulette are all "hard" MGK. El Diablo being the standout, its got a sick beat with a fast flow. Roulette and Floor 13 just don't feel as polished in almost ever way. Floor 13 is a little more dynamic and mixes up the beat, both songs just don't feel as polished as El Diablo.

Glass House, Death In My Pocket, and 5:3666 are MGK's depressed side, talking about the struggles of life, being famous, his depression. Some hit harder than others, but Glass House hits me the hardest with his lyrics. Death In My Pocket is a close second though. 5:3666 just doesn't have a good hook and that's what holds it back, but its still a solid song.

Candy, Wasted Love, Burning Memories, and I Think I'm Okay are MGK's pop/drug side. These are my least favorite songs on the album. I've never really liked his pop stuff all that much with a few exceptions, but Wasted Love and Candy are bearable to listen to. Wasted Love could also been looped in with his depressing songs as well, but it definitely fits the same vibe as the other pop/drug songs.

Ive had the following albums on heavy rotation:

The Ruins of Beverast (Germany) - Blood Vaults (2013)

Atmospheric Black/Doom metal - They have a really unique take on mixing doom and black together with some solid crunchy groovy sections and clean vocals in 1/3 of a song followed up by full on black metal with deep gutteral vocals.  Great stuff. I just saw them too in Brooklyn and they were really great live.

Owls Woods Graves (Poland) - Citizenship of the Abyss (2019)

Blackened Hardcore Punk - This shit is just amazing. Fast frantic rifts with BM vocals about sums it up. This album gives me almost a heavier Blood 4 Blood sound. Check out their debut EP also as I think its just as good. Its got more sing-a-long style sections that remind of the Misfits and the vocals are a little cleaner, which give me a Peter Steele Carnivore vibe. Im absolutely hooked on this band.

Old Tower (Netherlands) - Rise of the Spectral Horizon (2018)

Raw low-fi dungeon synth. Just dark, mellow music. I like to listen to this at work to drown out my obnoxious co-workers in adjacent cubes. This album is a comp of two previous releases  - Rise of the Specter and Spectral Horizons.

Incendiary (Long Island) - Thousand Mile Stare (2017)

Classic LIHC with clean vocals and good breakdowns. Vocals have a Zach De La Rocha vibe to em.

I discovered Pinback back in the mid 00s and fell in love with them. Indie rock isn't usually my thing, but their songs have soaring, epic melodies and interesting vocal trade-offs. Some even have a healthy dose of technicality that I would love in any prog rock or metal song. So many of their songs have gorgeous and beautiful outros. And they are perfectly radio friendly. There is no greater indictment of the music industry as a whole than the fact that Pinback isn't as big as an Imagine Dragons or a Killers. I've been in a Pinback mood the past couple of weeks or so. Mostly listening to their earlier work. These are just some of my favorites from their first 10 years.

Their first album was a self-titled release in 1999. It's definitely not their best work--a lot of the songs are extremely repetitive and don't go anywhere--but it shows their potential and their quirkiness. The song "Loro" is probably my favorite from the album. It's music to relax to, but it's also slightly melancholic.

I also enjoy the songs "Crutch" and "Tripoli" from this album.

Their sophomore effort Blue Screen Life (2001) is where they really start to develop--more complex song structures and compositions (especially in the vocals), more instruments, and much better production. There are several standout tracks on this album, but my favorites are actually the first track "Offline P.K." and the last track "Tres".

I love the contrasting verse and chorus in "Offline P.K." that then blend together and resolve in the epic outro. It's a brilliant song.

"Tres" is another simple song that is just beautiful and melancholic.

But like I said there are several great songs on this album. The zany trip of "Prog" and its soaring chorus that arrives halfway through the song; "Boo" and my lack of ability to describe how beautiful the song and its outro are; the catchiness of "Penelope". This and their next album go back and forth as my favorites.

Summer in Abaddon (2004) might be peak Pinback. This was the first album of theirs I heard. The song "Fortress" was popular in the indie scene back then. I enjoy that song but it can't compare to some of the others on the album. For example the opener "Non Photo-Blue". I think it's my favorite song on the album.

It's follow-up track "Sender" is great too.

And the closing track "AFK" is another one with a beauty of an outro.

Another track that is awesome and epic is "Syracuse".

Autumn of the Seraphs (2007) was their next album. From here on their work gets a bit spottier and less interesting IMO. But there's some really good stuff here still. "Good to Sea" has to be one of the catchiest songs I've ever heard.

So despite always liking many Led Zeppelin tracks, I somehow missed the boat and early Rock education and never actually owned any albums other than the first. I'm making my way through them now.

Led Zeppelin IV - 10/10

Get the fuck outta here...I can't even believe I've managed to stay this ignorant until now. This album is just a straight 10 all the way through for me with maybe only Rock And Roll being about a 9. My favorite track is possibly Going To California, it almost makes me tear up every single time I hear it, no exception.

Wait till you get to Houses of the Holy and hear The Crunge. Your life will change!

I went to a music festival here in Freiburg, Germany on Wednesday and saw Foals. They were really great live, and I was about 10 feet from the stage. The only dumb thing was they only played for about an hour and didn't give any kind of an encore. The organizers said that the singer had a fever, but I don't quite understand why you play for an hour and then don't do even 1 more song when you have several hundred people going nuts for it. :p

Oh well. Anyway overall it was completely worth it, especially since it was a birthday present and I didn't pay.

Also I've really been digging the new Silversun Pickups album, Widow's Weeds.

Just bought myself the album too. Huge fan of their first 2 albums and the last one had moments but was t the same sound. Glad they went back to no synths and brought back in the strings (violins and cellos) It doesn’t hit the highs of Swoon but it does have some catchy songs. I was hoping for another Royal We type high I would get when it starts slowish but keeps building and building to rush of energy chorus. So far I’m really liking We Are Chameleons, Freakaziod, and It Doesn’t Matter Why. They have some fun lyrics and catchy riffs. I have given it a full 2 listens so far and would rate it roughly 7.5/10.

little high right now as I type this and Simpatico works amazingly well as a nice mellow song before bed

My year end list is going to be so fucking hard to sort out a top 10. Jesus.

Cloudkicker - Unending (2019) - 10/10

Ben Sharp (who does everything in Cloudkicker) is one of my absolute favorite overall musicians that is currently making music. His ability to build epic melodies by adding layer upon layer as the song goes on is unmatched. Just listen to the middle section in "Blackwing" for the perfect example of what I'm talking about. It just builds and builds on itself while getting louder and more complex until the end of the song. Yet the underlying melody and rhythm don't change. And it beautifully transfers the emotion into the interlude of the following track "AR-Lp 36".

Another track that does this well is "YHWH"--a grungy, fuzzy, post-rock downer.

But I save the best for last. The standout track for me is "Void". A rhythmically complex, djenty, and melodic piece that just rakes you over the coals with its heaviness and emotion.

Go download the album for free on Ben's bandcamp page. But I'd encourage you to leave a tip.

I like how they went through all that trouble with personalized paint, blood, belts, gauntlets etc. and yet ended up in the local city park on a summery, sunny afternoon.

I'm into the caveman-ish opening/recurring main section there but the rest of the song, including the sound itself, isn't my cup of tea. The bass line and drumming in that part are cool.
