Well, this answers that particular question!

Gotham Knights Is Officially Not Part of the Arkham Series

Quote

ComicBook.com reached out to WB Games Montreal to figure out where Gotham Knights fits into Batman Arkham's continuity. It turns out, it doesn't. WB Games Montreal tells ComicBook.com that, "Gotham Knights is an original story set in DC's Batman Universe and not connected to the Arkham series." Despite picking up in a similar place to where Batman: Arkham Knight left the Arkhamverse, Gotham Knights will start something new.

It makes sense that they would eventually need to separate from the Arkham series if they wanted to continue making Batman games. They probably started out as a sequel, using the ending of Knight as the starting point, but eventually shifted it to its own thing, using the death of Batman as inspiration.

At first I thought this was a sequel to Arkham Knight, but I don't think it is since it mentioned Gordon being dead, and Gordon never died in Arkham Knight, he was mayor by the end of it.

Plus (Arkham VR spoilers):

Spoiler

Nightwing is dead in the Arkham series

Oh shit, really? I never played the VR game.

Yea, I’m unsure if it’s cannon but it takes places (seemingly many) years after Arkham Knight

Spoiler

The Joker, whom you locked away at the end of AK, has been slowly etching his way out, and has been taking over Bruce when he sleeps... and murdering his companions as Batman. It ends with The Joker locking you (Batman/Bruce) in the cell (within Bruce’s brain) that you had locked him in at the end of AK.

Origins wasn’t a canonical prequel to Asylum?

I always thought it was. I also thought that game got unnecessary hate because it wasn't from Rocksteady.

Origins is very much a canonical "Arkhamverse" prequel to Asylum.

Gotham Knights: Our Biggest Questions, Answered (IGN)

Quote

Gotham Knights, WB Games Montreal's game set in a brand new Batman game universe, came with a nicely explanatory gameplay trailer - but we still had a lot of questions after the reveal.

Thankfully, I got to speak to creative director Patrick Redding and senior producer Fleur Marty, who answered many of the questions we were left asking after the reveal - from how the open world works, to whether you can play co-op with two of the same characters, to how gear and costumes will work. And much, much more.

Gotham Knights Devs On If Batman Is Really Dead, Gameplay Structure, And More (Gamespot)

Quote

After rumors, teases, and a few unexpected leaks, WB Montreal's Batman game has stepped out of the shadows. Except, it turns out it's not a Batman game as much as a Bat-family game. Gotham Knights brings together Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and Red Hood for an ambitious open-world crime caper that will pit players against iconic villains to keep Gotham safe.

The big twist is, in this game, Bruce Wayne and Batman are believed to be dead, which means the Bat-family needs to rise up to the challenge and establish themselves as the city's new saviours. It's an interesting premise that separates itself from the Batman: Arkham series in distinct ways, the most obvious of which is a greater focus on an RPG experience, and one that can also be played in co-op at that.

To get a better insight into WB Montreal's ambitions for the game, as well as clear up some details on the gameplay experience, we spoke to creative director Patrick Redding and senior producer Fleur Marty about the concept and structure of the game, as well as where it drew--or didn't draw--inspiration from.

Only thing I hated was a game breaking glitch that prevented you from continuing the story. Everybody had to wait until that got fixed if the glitch happened.

It was where you needed to grapple out of a room but he wouldn't enter the vent.
