Shut down Social Media (except D1P, naturally), update: Facebook to shut down its facial recognition program

Recommended Posts

I've had my FB account deactivated, not deleted, for several years now and I logged back in to download pictures and fully delete it over the weekend. What a fucking mess my wall was, it just reinforced how much I disliked the whole concept. When it's not idiotic political nonsense I don't care about, it's just everyone complaining or posting something legitimately cool nobody interacts with anyway. What a shitshow all in all and I still have a couple friends where I wish I wouldn't have seen a certain side of them and lived in blissful ignorance instead and remained friends.

Frances Haugen is testifying in front of a British parliamentary committee today:

LONDON (AP) — Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen told British lawmakers Monday that the social media giant stokes online hate and extremism, fails to protect children from harmful content and lacks any incentive to fix the problems, providing strong momentum for efforts by European governments working on stricter regulation of tech giants.

I wish I could figure out hashtags so more people could see my art. It drives me nuts that I’ll post something, it’s get one or two likes on Instagram, but then gets 86 likes on Facebook.

I want to sell my art dammit, and I don’t want it on a right wing hell hole like Facebook.

The only time I ever dabbled I'm actually using Facebook, I briefly reconnected with people I hadn't spoken to in years, I used it to test out jokes that I was working on in my brief foray into stand up (to "mixed" success, let's say. Stand up is really hard and you have to work a lot at it), and within a couple months I had ruined relationships with like half of my family and learned a lot about how shitty people really are. I'd rather live in blissful ignorance.

"Politically neutral" is just right-wing by a different name.

Reality has a liberal bias.

Bro hashtags are just like, categories or topics or pre-generated search terms. Just imagine someone searching for the term and then your shit will come up. That way you can search for content without having to know the user. I use them to search for comments about the trashy reality TV I watch.

Ignoring the fact that this is about Meghan for a second, I think it’s worth acknowledging that so many online hate campaigns on social media platforms are orchestrated by a handful / small pool of accounts and signal boosted to a ridiculous degree as a blood sacrifice on the altar of engagement. The fact that such a small number of users hold the keys to driving an outsized impact on online discourse is really troubling.

These platforms know what these accounts are and what they’re doing and elect to simply not respond or react in the overwhelming majority of circumstances..

As I said before. Twitter will only ban these accounts if it turns into bad press. That's only because Twitter isn't as financially strong as Facebook. Facebook, being loath to actually banning people, will usually just ignore these stories. Right now, nobody is really talking about how some 65% of COVID-19 misinformation is generated by a literally dozen people. Facebook never banned those people and they've continued to generate more COVID misinformation. Facebook was right. They were able to wait the story out.

How do so many of these chucklefucks seem to forget that in the technological future fiction they love referencing, the corpos are the villains?

It’s like bragging about forging a magic ring in a volcano, how you really put your heart and soul into it, and that nobody will want to take it off.

Because bros always miss the point of these movies. Remember how influential Wall Street was, leading to whole new generations of asshole traders?
