DC Comics, DC Universe Hit By Major Layoffs

Hoo-boy.

This is definitely one way to start streamlining operations for an eventual transition from the actual comics development/publishing business to an IP licensing model.

You can bet that this is coming to the WB Games side too.  They're going to "lean up" that division to make it more attractive to potential buyers.

From Bleeding Cool:

With so many staff leaving the company, around a third it is estimated, the continual production of comic books is likely to take a hit, but the graphic novel line, which has become more valuable to DC, is so far in advance of production, that no one would notice until well into 2021.

Because we also hear about what is described as a Two-Year Plan for DC Comics which will see DC Comics move to mass-market production through Walmart, the licensing of titles with editors moving to brand managers/approval roles, alongside a move from DC to digital serialisation and original graphic novels. Content will still be provided to the direct market but it will no longer be the priority that it (still) is at DC Comics.

That's been the word for awhile. AT&T does NOT want to be in the publishing business.

It's going to be cool when someone at AT&T thinks "Those Disney folks really know how to make money on superheros. Let's work out a licensing deal.".

There's already been rumors that DC's characters would be licensed to Marvel for publishing at least. When I first started hearing those rumors months ago I dismissed them. Now, I don't think they're THAT off base.

Following massive layoffs and company wide restructuring, DC Comics has confirmed the cancellation of several titles including Teen Titans, Young Justice, Suicide Squad, Hawkman, and John Constantine: Hellblazer. These books join the already confirmed cancellations of Batgirl, Batman and the Outsiders, and Justice League Odyssey alongside the planned conclusions of The Batman’s Grave and Metal Men.

I don't think that this recent interview that Jim Lee gave to The Hollywood Reporter was particularly "reassuring" regarding the future of the "comics" part of DC Comics.

What about the rumor that AT&T hates comics and wants to get out of the comic business?

I don’t think they want to stop us from publishing comics. Comics serve a lot of different purposes and one of them is it’s a great way to incubate ideas and creating the next great franchises. We want to continue that. Why would you want to stop that? Why would you want to stop creating great content that could be used across the greater enterprise?
