This ban won't because that is not how either of these companies work. WeChat due to WePay is tied in with banks with china for all transactions, far as I know you can't do any transaction in the app anymore without a chinese bank account. Second TikTok does not run/exist in china. Due to the nature of how china is, when TikTok creator ByteDance was looking to bring Douyin (The platform in china) to the west, they spun up a clone of the platform which is TikTok.  So TT shutting down has no direct impact on Douyin in china.

Blame this on the vagueness of the EO. If, in this case, Apple cannot perform any type of transaction with Tencent, how would that not ban Tencent from, say, updating or Apple providing tools and such to support the iOS port of WeChat?

The EO seems to state that US companies cannot engage in any sort of transaction with Tencent in regards to WeChat.

In software, none of those examples falls under transactions. The only one would be Tencents/ByteDance renewing their yearly dev contracts with apple. Yet there are most likely legal ways for apple to get around that in the 45 day period before either EO kicks in.

Surely no coincidence that Facebook is buddy-buddy with Trump and launched their TikTok competitor at the same time Trump is banning TikTok!

Announced literally the same day as Trump announcing he's banning TikTok.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/14/politics/tiktok-trump-executive-order/index.html

"President Donald Trump issued an executive order Friday evening directing ByteDance, the Chinese-owned parent company of TikTok, to divest interest in the app's US operations within the next 90 days.

Trump explained in the order that he believes there is "credible evidence" that ByteDance "might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States" following the company's acquisition of the social media app Musical.ly."

So far we have Oracle, MS, and Twitter all talking about buying. MS still seems the most likely, given their Chinese connections, but who knows. Bill Gates certainly doesn't want MS to buy. Maybe TikTok is just going to win in court and no sale will even happen.

Oddly, it seems very fragmented. Microsoft seems interested in all of TikTok minus Douyin whereas Twitter and Oracle only seem interested in TikTok's US operations.

Walmart?

Walmart has been building up their data presence. Walmart Labs does a lot of things similar to Amazon, in terms of analytics.

the reason why TikTok would be attractive to Walmart is because TikTok ads seem to work better than FB, Google, and Snap in getting users to buy physical stuff (via ads). And ads on TikTok are half the cost of FB.

Seems to be the smallest of the possible players involved.

But Oracle's business model is to lock you into dependence Oracle products and then milk you for everything you're worth. I'm sure they were only interested because they think they can do the same here.

Better than having Microsoft or Walmart enter the social media fray.

So pretty much they're just going to slap their names on the servers and say that is all. I wonder if Oracle's CEO being budy budy with trump will be enough to pass his bullshit test or will FB get in his ear again to screw this up.

"Handling the cloud stuff" means easier US gov access into their servers.
