Update: RIP in Peace, Raised by Wolves

Ridley Scott directing the pilot is cool, but I doubt he's otherwise very involved at all. Who matters here is primary writer and showrunner Aaron Guzikowski, who solely wrote the films Contraband, Prisoners, and the remake of Papillon. He also wrote and showran The Red Road (with Jason Mamoa). That's a pretty interesting resume, so I am cautiously optimistic about this show.

Oh...I was 0% interested, now I'm at like 90%. I fucking love Prisoners

True, I agree, but that's probably far more thanks to director Denis Villenueve than Aaron Guzikowski, which is why it's important to look at his entire body of work, which still confirms this could be good! :)

I similarly had 0% interest in this until I read up on the actual creative staff involved, and I was like: "definitely at least keep an eye on". Always good to check the writers/directors!

Hey, I actually have HBO now, I'll check this out.

Although, Ridley Scott's name being attached is something I consider a big negative at this point in his career.

If it helps, he's just directing the pilot and executive producing, I believe.

Well that I agree with 100% but still a killer story. Villeneuve is the shit. You can see his style all over it.

I remember being excited for something with Paul Schrader's name on it once just because all it reminded me of was Taxi Driver and I learned my lesson.

Paul Schrader can be very good (he recently did the excellent First Reformed with Ethan Hawke) but he's been bad more often than good in the last two decades. His early work is phenomenal though. He's like Lucas and Coppola and a lot of artists that way.

Also, IGN doesn't mean much, but they loved it. The specific reviewer Siddhant Adlakha, has written at BMD and /Film, so he's legit. Apparently Ridley directs the first two episodes (the review reviews the first three episodes).

For movies maybe. But I’ve really enjoyed all the TV Shows his name has been attached to

So do we get the first three episodes today?

Is it a weekly release on Thursdays?

Yep, you are correct - first three episodes drop all at once today (the first two directed by Ridley Scott himself, the third by his son, Luke Scott, who has done shorts for Ridley in the past) and the one new episode each week every Thursday. It also looks like it will be a ten episode season overall.

This is VERY much "Euro sci-fi" in tone.  It reminds me of the comics from the French publisher Humanoids.

In regard to the religion of the series, it appears to be a syncretic faith that combines the ancient Roman/Persian religion of Mithraism and the Roman cult of Sol Invictus

Raised by Wolves: Mithraism and Sol Explained (Den of Geek)

Quote

The Mithraic get their name from an ancient religious cult of the god Mithras. The god Mitra originally came from ancient Persia (modern Iran). At the height of the Roman Empire, he began to be worshipped as Mithras in a Roman mystery cult. The cult became very popular, especially with soldiers. The sun god Sol was originally a separate god, but Mithras was often worshipped together with “Sol Invictus”, the conquering sun. This is why in the show, the two gods have been blended into one and the Mithraists, or “Mithraic”, worship a single god called Sol, who is associated with “the Light”. It’s also why the Mithraic characters wear sun emblems and sun pendants in the same way Christians might wear crosses.

Yeah, there are 3 shows I want to watch all coming out at the exact same time...

The Boys, Raised by Wolves and Lovecraft Country. (Also now Watchmen, which I have not seen yet, but now can)

I hate waiting for new episodes, so I'm kinda letting them all bank up for the next few weeks before I start. When I watch a show I usually like to do one episode a night.

I have HBO Max through Hulu, yet I can't find this show. Any tips?

Based on a quick google, it looks like to get Max-specific content, you’ll need to log into the HBO Max site/app and use your Hulu credentials.

So if you signed up via Hulu in the hopes of having one less app to mess with, sorry!

That sucks, but at least I have some way to watch it, thanks!

Watched through the first three episodes, and I'm impressed how many big swings this show is taking so early. There are a couple things I feel like could easily have been season finale events. It does very much explain the release of the first three episodes together. I would expect the show to settle down a little bit, but who knows.

It sure is a novel sci-fi concept for a show, but as of now I feel like it's more interesting than exciting. I want to know more about the world they've built, but it's the world they've left behind that is more interesting than the planet the show takes place on. I also I can't say I'm particularly attached to any of the characters. I think that's a product of many of the primary characters being either androids or children.

Even the setup for the show feels like a science experiment. You want to know what happens, but the overall result is more interesting than the fate of a given specimen.

As an aside, my wife (who majored in ancient greek) thought it was nifty that they used the cult of Mithras as the basis for the religion in the show. Bottom line she had for me was that it was a really big deal for a time, but somehow we know very little about it. I think that makes it a good candidate for a show like this. It has a real basis, but especially if you account for a couple millenia of development, you can mostly ascribe whatever beliefs you want to it.

Finally started watching this tonight and its nowhere near as dense or confusing as I thought it would be based on the trailer. Plot is pretty straightforward and I'm impressed by the amount of plot twists have occured so far (I'm halfway through episode three). Interesting world they've built and there are some compelling characters as well. Looking forward to seeing how this thing pans out. I hope it gets picked up.
