PaladinSolo
Laura pushed further west, which seems to be forcasting Marco to make a more westward push into TX, wonder if Laura blocks Marco from eventually pushing east allowing it to sit like Harvey did?

marioandsonic
Louisiana about to be double penetrated. Thankfully neither one of these storms is expected to be anywhere near as powerful as Katrina, but if something like that happened, I shudder to think how poorly Trump's FEMA would handle it. marioandsonic
Marco was greatly diminished due to wind shear and other factors. Laura is not forecasted to have to deal with any of that.

Guest
@SaysWho? Any idea why the NHC cone seems much further east of all the major models? Looks to me like the consensus overnight turned into a landfall between Houston and Beaumont and the NHC charts still suggest the Texas/Louisiana border in the likelier location of official landfall. Nearly every model I'm looking at, from the global models like Euro/GFS to the HWRF/HMON, has it between Texas/Louisiana. And I think the UK was the same earlier when I saw it. What are you looking at?

SaysWho?
As of 8am, Laura is the first major hurricane of the season. It's an interesting season because it's outpacing the record 2005 season (the one with Katrina and Rita and Wilma, the only year we went into the Greek alphabet, and a season when a tropical cyclone made landfall in Spain). But that season had TWO major hurricanes (Dennis at Cat 4 and Emily at Cat 5) in July, which is unheard of, so in terms of ACE (accumulated cyclone energy), it's still more active than 2020. We'll see what the next few weeks bring.

marioandsonic
The one silver lining is that, unlike Hurricane Harvey, Laura is going to be continuously moving, and so it won't linger and just keep dumping rain in one particular area.
SaysWho?
My feeling is that this isn't going to be as destructive as Harvey unless it intensifies waaaaayyyy past expectations. Harvey's flooding was devastating, and that kind of rain can do the same damage wind can do and weaken your home.
SaysWho?
Now it's expected to be a Cat 4 at landfall. It'll still hit wind shear, but it's strengthening much quicker, up to 125mph, a strong Cat 3. 130mph is considered Cat 4, but it's looking to go past that and get up to 145.
marioandsonic
I doubt it could reach Cat 5 (which is at least 160 mph), but who knows at this point...
PaladinSolo
Its a Cat 4 already 140mph winds.
marioandsonic
At this rate of intensification, it might actually reach Cat 5 before landfall. Holy shit.
