So they’re adding better AA?!

I tried disabling it in game and using it in NVIDIA control panel and... I don't know if it works but maybe it was better... Game is laggy AF though, laggier than ever so that was irritating me more. More  maintenance plz.

@Mr.Vic20

There are a lot of "fixes" going around regarding the resolution and graphics settings but it seems that they amount to nothing as the game seems to override all the settings you put in.

There's a method to changing the exe properties to disable DPI scaling

There's a method for changing the resolution through user.pso2

and then of course NVIDIA control panel (Changing AA settings or image sharpening to fix the blurriness if you keep AA on in game)

but it seems nothing changes if you do that. 🤷‍♀️ - Resolution is still a funky 2560x1440 (scaled up I presume)

This is particular frustrating to me because as you know I play everyone's second most hated game at these boards

Spoiler

Genshin Impact

And that game is free to play, much like this one, came out a year ago, can be played on mobile, but the PC port is great, in fact probably the best version. (I saw someone playing PS4 version briefly but it struggling to hit 30 fps was kinda gross looking). I know they are not the same style but one looks light years better than the other.

I hope that SEGA sees that this game is actually more popular than they had anticipated and actually put some assets into improving this game. I can honestly put up with the blurriness and like half assed look of the game but they need to fix the lag asap. But after that, they need to make this game look proper on PC.

Your first guess seems to be a solid one with some kind of internal rendering issue that doesn't want to play with others well. I find it fascinating that this game was in beta and clearly is designed to refresh interest in the series. One presumes that during the beta many people provided feed back about the resolution/anti-aliasing issues and yet...

I think the beta was mainly for a stress test type thing. The first one was only in Japan, the second one was global. They did release a feedback survey but I didn't get to participate because I had to hunt for it, when I saw it it was too late.

Also, they released a benchmark (you probably can still download it) and I think it looked better. :p

I think this game looks really cool but I don’t have enough time right now to dive into another huge time sink.

It's probably the best and worst time to jump in. There isn't a heavy amount of content right now, level cap is at 20. You could goof off and get what you want out of it right now.

I think I’ll wait until it’s fleshed out a bit and then swindle some friends to play it with me.

Well, I was finally able to force 4K on this game by choosing High DPI scaling via the compatibility tab (right click on the EXE and choose the compatibility tab). This fix, plus forcing AA at the Nvida driver level and turning off in game AA has resulted in a crisp, clear image finally! :sun:

Have you guys been playing? How is it?

I got to Lvl 4 or 5 I think.  Just not sure I was feeling all it's systems yet.  It was still hard for me to figure out how I was progressing at all.

I played another hour, the world looks nice and the combat is sufficient, but so far its just OK.

I'm actually liking it a lot more than I thought I would. I guess since I haven't been keeping up I was expecting "PSO2 but with maybe slightly bigger, more open stages" wasn't really expecting open-world PSO with Zelda-like shrine challenges and challenging open-world bosses. I especially like how you can just go in and out of the city like it's part of the world.

I think a not insignificant part of my enjoyment of that is the fact that I've been playing PSO since the Dreamcast version (and in fact it's the reason I'm posting here now, I made my IGN forum account specifically to share the Japanese version with people before it was out in the US) and it's ALWAYS been a lobby followed by small stages. Even the biggest areas in PSO2 were not all that much bigger than PSO1 or PSU or any of that stuff. So it's very novel to me.

My only concern so far is variety. I've only really seen one big boss enemy and he seems to be present... everywhere. Hoping we're not dealing with a Genshin Impact situation where the game is like 5% done at launch. Also the characters are ugly as shit (which I find funny) and the acting is so bad I actively skip every cutscene. I dunno how Sega gets worse and worse at storytelling and character design, but it never ceases to amuse me.

I saw some huge Giant looking thing walking around pretty close to the original city.  I think it was Lvl 15.  I ran away as I am only like Lvl 4/5.

My main issue is I hate when new loot, especially armor, doesn't change your appearance.  Also when I level up, I am not sure what really gets improved.  Some stats? Do we get to choose which stat, have points to distribute? I know you can upgrade some skills from that vendor, but the skills you choose from don't seem overly interesting.

I have too much other stuff to play right now to really dump a lot of hours into an MMO I'm not totally into it, so I'm still in the wait and see stance.

It usually says on screen when you level up which stats level up.

EDIT: As for the appearance of armor, well this game is basically fashion souls. Armor upgrades are separate from cosmetic looks. If you want to look different you have to get into the scratch ticket thing.

Try applying those steps to the pso2launcher as well. I think that will do the trick. I would also add that some how it does not work on the title screen! So when you see all the grass in the title screen as a sea of pixel hell, keep going to the actual game!

Yeah I guess I'll try. Have you taken a screenshot to verify? (Pressing print screen saves it to the folder) I'm guessing the screenshot dimensions capture what resolution the game is natively running at.

I'm still fussing around with the frame drops (I guess they are frame drops not lag? - At least when I pull up the FPS counter it shows FPS drop all the time) - Running on a 2080ti which should be a cakewalk for this game so I'm not sure what's happening. Well I know what's happening, it's just kind of an unoptimized mess. :p

Well this was fun! Turns out that the wireless Logitech Keyboard I game with (K780) does not have a print screen, but after using Windows Key+shift+S, yes I was able to capture an in game screen grab at 3840x2160. Native 4K, just as Jebus intended! As for frame drops, I have no doubt that the port is crap, but my 3090 does not feel it. :p

This does not work I believe. I did the same thing. Yes, because it is capturing your screen it will take a correct resolution screenshot. Pressing print screen is the real test because it will save it to the game folder and you can see the resolution that it saves as is 2560x1440

Also, I'm pretty sure you can change the keybinding on this so that you can actually press a button to take a screenshot. Try it out!

I wanna check something else out. Are you playing in Window mode or Virtual Full Screen mode?

I tried using some other hot tip to make the game run better, supposedly you have to start regular PSO2, then log out and back into PSO2NG but it didn't quite work.

I'm running in Virtual full screen set a t 4K. As for the print screen, I can't find where in the settings menu I can rebind screen capture. If you do find it let me know and I'll give that a shot!

@Mr.Vic20

I decided to do a deep dick dive into these issues and I would say half a victory today.

I found this thread that said to download special K because it will remove forced Vsync that causes stuttering. It didn't exactly fix the stutter issues but I found something else out. The game is running windowed 2560x1440 stretched to 4k, which is why it looked like butt. Why was this happening? Well it's because I don't have young spry eyes like yourself and have 150% scaling for text and such set. Well I guess this game is dumb and if you have 150% scaling set then it breaks the resolution. I set it to 100% and the game runs at 4k now

You can compare this top one to the old one that was kind of a blurry mess (well not kind of, it was!

Spoiler

pso20210620-074054-001.png

pso20210610-010615-001.png

So it will be annoying but I guess every time I play this I'll have to change the scaling. :|

As for the stutters (This game will be running at 60 then just randomly drop down to 1 or 3 fps) they are still there, so I guess the next thing I'll have to do is look into that. The special K thing hasn't helped with that but maybe there are other things I'll have to fool around with.

@Mr.Vic20

I finally fixed something that has been driving me crazy (no not the random frame drops lol)

I had issues with the lock on targeting not what I wanted. There's a control option to change the lock on to where the CAMERA is facing not where the CHARACTER is facing. So I changed that and the lock-on is much better. Generally the character is facing all sorts of weird angles and my camera is looking at what I want targeted so this cleared up the issue. :p

Also for folks who probably gave up on this like @JPDunks4 sadly it looks like the game locks a lot of features out at the beginning until you progress in the story which seems to be acting as a tutorial of sorts. I got past a section that allows me to make multi-weapons now and unlock weapon potentials and such. I'm about level 13 in my main class so maybe stick with it a bit more. (You also have to get to a point in the story that unlocks daily and weekly missions - This was in the beta but was unlocked rather quickly)

Also, since I doubt any of you log in daily there is a daily scratch ticket you can use as well as get daily login bonuses.

So I got to the end of the story content, I think. It said "To be continued"

Spoilers, you fight Nex Aelio with Dozer!

But for real it is a pretty cool fight.

I made an alliance, called dayonepatch, join it if you can find it. For some reason it's not showing my XBL friends list, so I can't invite from there. 🤷‍♀️

I may try this again at some point.  Any further impressions in Progression and character builds?. Does that get a lot deeper?

Depends on what you mean by "build"

You choose a class

choose a sub class

level up the skill tree (which isn't too robust)

I think the game gets deeper when it comes to weapons.

You can have a normal weapon, or you can have a "multi-weapon" which can use skills of another class (ideally your sub class)

You level up weapons, you can put augments on weapons and then you "unlock potential" on weapons.

Basically as you progress through the story and your power level goes up more of these features are unlocked for you. You'll really want to get that power level up because the urgent missions are pretty cool and give good loot. I'm level 19, almost 20 right now.

Someone needs to party up with me so I can get the "use group chat" quest out of the way. :p

The 9th anniversary event going on is a good time but I think you need to make some progress with your character to partake.

Here's a video about multi-weapons that kind of explains it better than me.
