Strength, Runic, and Cooldown are the most important stats you should focus on. I think Luck only determines drop rates for items. Could be wrong on that, but still the the I listed are what I focused on since Vitality and Defence are only good if you're getting hit, and dodging is really important in this game (which is a shame that it's actually kind of broken, and I hope gets tightened up in the sequel (there are times when you have perfectly dodged, but the game goes "nope", and teleports either you or the enemy into the line of attack, and you still get hit)).

No, luck absolutely increases chances of perks from enchantments, like runic refreshes, as I said. And luck over 120 means almost constant perks from everthing but “very low activation chance”.

Last valk fight is some good shit.

It was definitely worth it.

6 more ravens for the plat.
fully upgraded Valkyrie armor w/ grip of the fallen is a deadly armor set. I started NG+ on hard, but im just picking through it slowly. I just woke tyr’s head and went to muspelheim. The Valkyrie there is way, way harder on all difficulties. So far I didn’t beat her, but I only tried 3 times. I decimated her the first time on normal.

Have you gotten the Niflheim armour yet? That's the best armour in the game (didn't know NG+ adds new Red tier armour sets; that's cool). They are a bit of a chore to get though because they require a lot of grinding.

Oh yeah. I beat the 9 Valkyrie. Most of them using it. Though there are better builds than the Ivaldi Armor, as I said above.

So after finishing Ghost of Tsushima, I decided to embark on my journey through the God of War series on PS Now.

Just don’t expect GoW ps4 if you never played them. They are pretty much dmc clones. Still fun thiugh, and the set pieces are huge.

I don't think he's played the PS4 one. This probably would serve as a good transition from TLOU2 and Ghost of Trushima. TLOU2 is linear but still is a meaty, longer linear game. Ghost of Tsushima is open-world, but the GOW games will now be shorter action-adventures to break things up if he decided to go into GOW4, which is easily my favorite of the bunch.

As much as I loved God of War, I gave up on the next to last Valkyrie. It wasn't fun, just frustrating. I did almost everything else in the game, IIRC, though.

That's where I checked out too.

Same thing here. I love a good challenge but just had enough at that point and stopped giving a shit. The investment was too high.

Yeah this is my first time playing any God of War.

I got through the 1st area of the game.  I will admit, after playing TLoU2 and then Ghost, it's going to be tough to go this far back in time to play a PS2 game.  I played through the 1st Uncharted not too long ago, but that as part of the Nathan Drake Collection, so it was remastered, and still looked pretty good.  The camera in this game is going to be tough to deal with.  The audio was also crazy loud and obnoxious as well.

This is also my first time using PS Now.  I did have some lag spikes happen during gameplay, while having the PS4 hardwired, but the responsiveness of the controls was extremely good.  I couldn't tell I was playing a Streamed title other than when the quality of the image or it lagged a bit.  Also, the sheer amount of titles in the catalog is extremely impressive.  I counted 41 PS2 games, and like 440 PS3 games, and something like 360 PS4 games.  While Game Streaming isn't a perfect solution, and of the 3 I've used, Stadia/xCloud/PS Now, PS Now probably had the lowest quality of service, I can't discount the value of $40 for the year I paid for PS Now and the amount of content they have available.

I do hope the game isn't too long as I'd like to run through them fairly quick.  The boss fight last night lasted way too long for not being challenging at all, just a time sink.  So hopefully those get a bit more fun and interesting as the game goes on.

It's pretty short. You should be able to knock it out within 8 - 10 hours even if you're taking your time to the extent that you can in this game.

The bosses can be fun, but I'd say the best bosses are in 2 and 3 (and most numerous). This game's strengths, believe it or not, are the puzzles. I mean, the combat is fun, but the puzzles are really, really well done, particularly the culmination of Pandora's Temple.

Just put more time into it.  I assumed it'd be broken down into different stages with Bosses to finish each area, but I was going on for awhile without it ever having a break point.  I think I just got to Pandora's Temple, after saving the Oracle.

It's decent fun.  Knowing it is a PS2 game, I can definitely enjoy what it's doing.  I guess the PS Now version is the HD version from a PS3 remake, so that was why I was confused on the visuals.  The cutscenes I don't believe were redone, so they look downright terrible compared to the gameplay.

PS Now has held up really well today, very little lag or any other issue.

Yep, the gap between the first and second boss in GOW1 is huge. GOW1 and GOW4 have the fewest bosses, but there are more mini-bosses in GOW4, plus exploration is a bigger element to break up combat. For GOW1, the first half of the game is the attack on the ship and the trip to Pandora's Temple. After you finish the game, there's a great video on Youtube that came with the original game that showed early testing of the game, cut levels, and a cut boss in Pandora's Temple. It was really cool at the time, and I still think is, because the only behind-the-scenes stuff at the time could be found on a DVD for a show or movie, so GOW1 felt ahead of its time in that department. Now you can just get a lot of that online in dozens of interviews and videos and documentaries.

GOW2 introduced more bosses and more variety of bosses.

The game has an active slider for difficulty...can't you just lower it for a boss fight and then raise it again?

It took me about 75 tries on normal. She is incredibly hard to beat. You almost need to be perfect, because once she starts hurting you its really hard to recover. Her attacks are constant.

Get your ass back in the game and finish it

I went for a second playthrough not that long ago but lost interest halfway through. I tend to do that so apparently I'm destined to never "finish" it! I've also never Platinum'd a game in my life, I don't really have that completionist streak.

I'm not saying do it for a plat; I mean do it because the last valk is fun. :p

It feels closer to a Souls boss than much of what I've seen in any GOW game. Basically, it'll damage you severely, but if you get the tells, you'll kick her ass.

I'd have to get back into it, learn the combat again and all that...noooooooo man, NO! haha

I finished the first God of War.  Wasn't too impressed at all, but trying to remember it was a 2005 game.

I did start up God of War 2, but it seems to be damn near identical to the original in both combat, upgrades, animations, everything just about.  I did just get to the part where you lose your powers, so maybe now that I am "reset" all new stuff opens up?

So I think I maybe taking  a break for another game first.  Don't think I can do another back to back.

Just so you know, some of the games can be downloaded.  I know GoW3 can be.

Just skip them and go to GoW4. You really don’t need to know anything from the other games, aside from Kratos’ symbol. And maybe who pandora is.

Not true.  I have Arc the Lad downloaded, and I know there others that aren’t PS4.

If it's downloadable, it means they adapted it and basically re-released it for PS4, and you can purchase it for PS4 separately I believe.  It's not only available through PS Now at that point.

Quote

Description
Experience Arc The Lad: Twilight of the Spirits™ for PS2™ system with 1080p up-rendering and Trophies. Additional enhanced features include Shareplay (active PS Plus membership may be required), Remote Play, Activity Feeds and Second Screen support for game manuals with PS Vita system or PlayStation App.

It's up-rendered and has other enhancements for PS4.

Just checked the store. It’s not for sale, PS now only. But it does say its uprendered with trophies added.

Yeah, I can too. I made a mistake. I did a search and it just said PS now, but when you click on it you get other options.

Yeah I actually didn't know they had remade some of these older classics playable for PS4.  I'll have to dive into that list sometime and see what else I may have missed from back then.

Upgrades will be different. And combat will be expanded from the first. Remember that it was a two-year gap between games, so don't expect significantly different experiences.

The main change is pacing -- the bosses become more frequent and varied, the set pieces are varied and more numerous -- and honestly, that's much bigger than it seems. The mix of bosses/puzzles/combat is just better.

Guess now I can share this comic from 07.

  • 1 month later...

Just wrapped up God of War 2.  I took some time off playing Avengers.

It was definitely better than the original.  Really only thing I ended up disliking was the dumb QTE's at Zeus to finish up the game.

Other than that, it was a step up from the original, but I still wouldn't quite say I loved it or anything.

The most comparable game combat wise I played to this is Castlevania Lord of Shadow.  It's been a long time since I played it, but I remember enjoying that a lot more.  It did come out 3 years after God of War 2 though.

Gonna take a little break from the series, and come back to GoW3 hopefully next month or something on PS5.
