God of War Advice?

I ended up getting Ghost of Tsushima, as I've decided I will try to get new games and tackle them quickly, so my backlog doesn't keep growing.  And that way I can participate in discussions on them here on the boards.  I'll tackle backlog during the off times, which seems the next few months will give me a some time.

I'll prob start tackling the GoW's after Ghosts.

Huh. Twas not a major criticism of the game. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to control Atreus while fighting with Kratos.

Is the control scheme reasonably representative of modern action-adventure (or at least similar PS4) games? Maybe I'm just out of touch with the current thinking on how these sorts of games should control.

But for comparison, the PS4 Spider-Man game's controls felt really natural to me, other than the occasional wonkiness with stuff like running around on buildings and whether or not the auto-ledge-grab stuff would engage the way you were anticipating.

It’s a very deliberate combat. Kinda like Souls light, where the originals were hack and slash.

For me the controls felt like a natural evolution of what the PS3 games' controls would be in modern times. The game still FELT like God of War to me even though it had a more modern control scheme and the game was in full 3D. I was actually surprised at how well the game played and how much it felt like an action game. I think I need to kill one or two more Valkryies in that game.

So far I think its the best GoW by far. Im only 7-8 hours in, but I love it. Took me a bit to get into the combat, but once i got more abilities I loved it.

I think I've brought this up before, but...I'm not the only one who found the controls on the PS4 game very awkward, right? Especially when you're simultaneously controlling Kratos and the kid.

I'm wondering if what you felt was more the camera. I had a really hard time getting used to the insanely zoomed-in thing and those weird attack direction arrows. It feels stiff. Once I got used to it however, I had a lot of fun with the combat despite a shitload of the abilities, armor and other collectibles often feeling really inconsequential. The ax is really cool and the kid's abilities open up quite a bit as well and end up being very useful. He's basically just an auto-aim, mostly, distance weapon you don't have to ready yourself.

Some of the valkyries were fun and some were so hard I just gave up lol

That last valkyrie felt like a Souls boss, for realsies. You'll die in a few hits, but if you play close attention to her tells, you'll win, and it'll be exhilerating.

I died in the most hysterical way once time. I had her down, I just needed to press one prompt to finally defeat her, and then I stepped on some fire she set and I burned myself to death because I had 1 HP left.

Oh you sweet summer child. :daydream:

By that, I just mean if this is impressing you now, you're going to love discovering new abilities over the course of the adventure. :)

I'm pretty sure the post was deleted during the purge of 2018, but @Xbob42 gave a very well-written description of the game's pros, and one of them was how you really, truly felt rewarded for exploring. There are objects to knock down or break in so many places which will give you materials for good gear, there may be a side path there you want to explore, and once you do, oh shit, it's a Runic Attack and it's now my favorite Runic Attack.

Shit, just talking about this makes me want to go back to it once I finish Ghost of Tsushima/Persona 5/Ace Attorney. Fuck!

I am shocked at how amazing this game is. I enjoyed the original trilogy, but Kratos was just a rage machine with no personality.  Everything about this, the combat, the story, the RPG elements. This is probably the best game I’ve played this generation.

It's also incredibly atmospheric and has a really great sense of place if that's a term. The sound design especially is fantastic which I always appreciate. Some aspects really don't do it for me after the first playthrough but they're no biggie.

I don't know how much further he is from that 7-8 hour mark, but I can't wait until he gets further a head and meets that new character.

I actually beat tge main story late last night. Now i’m working on The Fire Realm trials.  I loved Mimir, and listening to his stories.

Spoiler

The Loki reveal was amazing as well. And the scene with Thor in Atreus prophecy/dream, wow!

I would love to see the end to this pandemic, but damn, it’s been cool to have time for games.

Just because you just beat it and OP hasn't played it, I'd put that in spoilers.

Fire Realm is a lot of fun! I'd think it would get frustrating, but the combat is so good that you don't feel like the AI is playing by different rules.

I just remember the 'kill 100 enemies without dying' challenge...my god (of war lulz).

But man, that's when I really realized how good the combat was. It's like, holy shit, you become a countering brute of a machine.

Done, sorry about that.

the combat is incredible. At the beginning it seemed so slow, now im a Valkyrie killing machine (ok, I only killed 3 so far).

And once you get the second weapon, the combat choices become never ending.

Imo, it’s one of the best games I have ever played.

The whole ending was incredible as well.

Spoiler

Kratos taking off his wrappings, giving Atreus the ashes to carry, the scene in the temple where they find out hus mother was Laufey, and then the end, the two of them with her ashes.

And that dream/prophesy, damn! I hope the second game comes out early in PS5’s life. I can’t wait to go on a god killing spree with my son.

I am so looking forward to next-gen God of War.

Also, if you're enjoying the Valkyrie fights now, wait until you get to the end of that quest line.

Ah yeah I meant that in a good way. Those trials were actually really fun unlike many other games who do this kind of shit because I felt myself steadily and noticeably improving. Flinging enemies off the cliff while doing fifty other cool things at once was incredibly fun.
