I didn't really catch the premise fully from that trailer but is this some sort of roguelike (or whatever it's called sorry)? Is there a full single player campaign?

Looks a lot like Dishonored but I'm not really sold somehow.

It's a single-player campaign where you can elect to be "invaded" by another player who will take the role of the female assassin.

It's totally optional though - you can turn that off and it'll just be you playing.

Ah okay, I wasn't really sure what the huge emphasis on 'loop' and dying over and over etc. was about and thought maybe it was some sort of rogue-like thing? Although I'm never 100% sure I know what that even means.

That multiplayer element sounds cool though.

Yes, the "deathloop" element is very much a rogue-like/rogue-lite gameplay attribute.

It's essentially building on what Arkane did for the Mooncrash expansion to Prey.

I actually haven't played that despite loving Prey, the description really turned me off honestly. I'll give it a shot some day just because it's Prey. I just equate rogue-like with 'the same level over and over'.

This just reminds me how much I need to play Dishonored 2 and Prey. My weird lingering need with Dishonored is that the game heavily disincentivized killing while providing much more rewarding and fun lethal tools than non-lethal tools.

This is really the core flaw of Dishonored, but it's not really a flaw unless you really care about getting the "good" ending.  Otherwise, the lethal tools are much more fun and the game seems entirely designed around them.  The Death of the Outsider expansion to Dishonored 2 does away with the chaos system and seems to outright admit that the lethal path is intended in these games.  Dishonored 2 is easily one of the best games this generation in my opinion, along with Prey and Mooncrash.

So since it came up already, what's the deal with Mooncrash? I kind of blew it off after reading the word rogue near it and never bothered despite loving the game. Sell me, Sir!

And this also annoyed the shit out of me in the first Dishonored. I didn't like the chaos system, I always felt the game was calling me an asshole for engaging with its much cooler systems.

I love the Dishonored games, and I like this premise for a game. Another player invading your otherwise single-player story-based experience seems like it could be either fantastic or terrible, so I'm glad you can turn that off.

Mooncrash is incredible, and I generally can't stand Roge-li(t)(k)es!  What's cool about it is that it takes the best elements of that genre (randomization, a persistent world, and a collision of different game systems) and streamlines them into a focused 10-15 hour experience.  Essentially, the goal is to escape a moon base using one of 5 characters.  The characters have slightly different stats and specializations, so the game challenges you to approach the encounters differently based on who you're playing.  The ultimate goal is to escape with all 5 characters in a single run, but the items in the world are persistent, so you have to strategize to determine what to leave and what to take, and what path to take to escape.  Because there are all sorts of ways to achieve your main goal, you begin to understand how to optimize runs with different characters in order to give yourself an advantage in later runs.

On top of that, it has the same level of gameplay and storytelling depth that Prey does, so if you liked that game, it's more of everything that made it great.  Essentially, it's a rogue-ish game that's not overly frustrating, a survival sim that's not a drag, and an immersive sim that forces you to play with all of its toys rather than let you spam one element to win.

I guess my use of the word “invading” really evokes the souls games, but this feels a little different. Most of the time in souls games it feels like a PVP match just interrupting your game. Here the named, primary antagonist is being taken over by another player. In practical terms, that might be a minor difference, but this feels closer to that one boss battle in Demon’s Souls than what happens in the rest of those games.

The Bethesda Blog explains the mechanics of DEATHLOOP

Quote

While you will experience the main campaign as Colt, you also have the option to infiltrate another player’s game as Julianna and do some hunting. But keep in mind, that means someone else could be lurking in your campaign, waiting for the chance to strike. This is Arkane’s approach to an immersive multiplayer experience, where the focus is still on the main story, but there is unpredictability around every corner. “We felt this style of multiplayer, where we give people the option to play as the main antagonist, is a great way to really ramp up the level of trickery, tension, chaos and just plain unpredictability that we love in games like this,” explains Bakaba. “We feel that our game systems uniquely position us to allow for the confrontation between two players to be one not just of skill, but of wits, creativity and an open display of your personality.”

If this PvP element is disabled, Julianna will still appear your game from time to time, hunting you, but she will be AI-controlled. The developers at Arkane Lyon built this system with a hybrid approach in mind. “The focus is on the campaign and the story," Bakaba says. "And that campaign can be played with Julianna controlled only by the AI, or – and this is our recommendation – by a mix of A.I. and random players to experience the range of unpredictability and chaos that Julianna is capable of."

Deathloop interview – a strange blend of Dishonored, Persona, Dark Souls and… Cluedo? (VG 24/7)

Quote

Deathloop is a game for anyone who felt shackled by Dishonored’s finger-wagging morality system.

You’re crashing a party at the end of the world, stuck inside a time loop, and the only way to escape is to shoot your way out, killing eight targets before the clock strikes midnight and the loop resets. Deathloop presents a world without consequence, where even those you kill will resurrect when this violent groundhog day spins back up.

“You can really go crazy, go loud, go silent, explore as much as you want or be as fast as you want, but without missing out on the content,” game director Dinga Bakaba explains. “So, there is something that furthers the Dishonored paradigm to an extent, in terms of gameplay.”
