Resident Evil VIIIage - Information Thread, update: "Winters' Expansion" TGS trailer

Got through the first encounter finally and it has indeed been smoother sailing since then. It’s… kind of a cheesy encounter. If I’m getting it correct, my initial tactics would have literally never allowed me to proceed, which is weird. Maybe I’m wrong?

It is a good / weird mix of RE 4 and 7. On Hardcore the enemies with default weapons are super spongey. Also they can catch up with Ethan from behind when he’s running at full speed, which makes the first area in particular annoying but has been fine elsewhere.

Maybe it’s familiarity but I feel like there’s much less tension than RE7 so far. I haven’t had the, “I don’t wanna open this door, it’s spooky,” vibe that 7 had a bunch of in the early game, on your first run.

It’s also one of the campier games to come out of the series in a while.

I guess there is no FOV slider in this game so someone made a mod to increase the FOV and you can remove the vignette

So CAPCOM still has this insane idea that games are more spook if the FoV is so tight you get motion sick. So I fixed it. Oh and the vignette. Fixed that too.

(The thumbnail is a bit extreme but even zoomed a bit out the game seems better)

From what I understand if you're on PC there is a memory leak in the ray tracing (turn it off) and you want to use the Rec 709 color space over RGB.

Yeah I finally got the memory leak after like 5 hours of playing. Thankfully I was right next to save point when it happen so no biggie.  That said outside of a couple of tiny frame dips (just enough that they were noticeable) the game run smooth as hell.

After several hours of play I did notice the frames start dipping. A quick restart of the game fixed it right up.

Been loving it so far. It's definitely less tense than 7, which is fine by me, since I'm mainly in it for the gunplay, which has been great. Absolutely enjoying the mix of RE7 and 4 style of gameplay, and it seems like the map just sort of opened up for me in a way. Part of me was always a bit bummed in most previous RE titles when the older areas just kind of got left behind fairly early on. Seems like a much better use of a sort of semi-hub here, if I'm seeing this right.

And yeah, the first big encounter on hardcore was definitely rough. I had to redo it several times before triggering whatever it was that finishes the fight. I assume it's just an internal timer or something, I dunno. I didn't do anything special on my successful run besides survive longer.

Since then it's been really good. I'm glad they've kept the much beefier enemies that don't just fall over in a couple headshots. You've got so much weaponry even early on that it's just fun to lay into enemies, and the new defense upgrades seem great so far. You can fire while guarding (sort of like a hipshot, great for when enemies are right up in your face) and if you hit the block button after blocking an attack, you do an RE4 style of knockback on the enemy who hit you.

The puzzles have been interesting and not all just crest finding, the environments are fucking beautiful, the characters are interesting, Ethan's as much of a sort of lame dork as ever which I love, the goats you shoot are hidden in fun ways, backtracking is rewarding, the map system they've been using for a couple games now is better and more useful than ever thanks to a slightly more expansive game world, the merchant has at least one or two interesting new options that make exploration even more rewarding. It's been fantastic.

If I had to pick a gripe, it'd be the weird cutscenes. RE7 was basically just your perspective the entire time. RE8 does a lot of cuts and at least a few minor flashbacks to scenes you've seen during conversations. It's not terrible, but it's a little weird. RE7 very lightly reminded me of Half-Life, in that every step (aside from being moved if you got knocked out or something) was essentially yours. It had a few scenes where you lost control, but it was still first-person.

Also switching between weapons quickly is hilarious. It looks like Ethan has like a wheel of arms or something. Try switching really quickly between the pistol and shotgun. It makes me laugh.

It's sounds like after a rough beginning it takes off. Glad to hear that. I'll just play on the normal difficulty because I suck at games.

I hear that Normal is kind of a cake walk, like you could breeze through it in one sitting type of easy.

Played for another couple hours last night and it's really, really good.  The writing and tone of the game is all over the place, but it's funny and bizarre in the way that all RE games are.  The graphics are out of control great on Series X so far, the combat is really fun, and I'm having a total blast.

Hmm. Maybe I'll try hardcore then. I do want some challenge and feel a sense of danger.

Other than the first encounter I’d say Hardcore hasn’t been hard at all.

Yea I'm gunna play on hardcore then. Or maybe "hard".

I didn't play the demo, so I can't comment on how the gameplay compares in the full release, but it's been extremely fun to play so far.  The combat feels as good, if not better, than other games in the series to me.  It feels on par with RE2R, though the gore isn't detailed in the same amazing way.  But it's really about staggering opponents and exploding headshots a la RE4 rather than removing limbs and avoiding enemies.  I've never thought that RE games had technical combat, so maybe there's more to criticize if that was the expectation, but Village feels to me like the continued evolution of the magic RE formula.  The environments are meticulously detailed and the art direction is phenomenal throughout all of the sequences that I've played so far.

It's directly inspired by RE4 to the point that this really feels like RE4 Part 2.  There seems to be a similar amount of weapons and customization, and I've already run across some stuff that I truly did not expect to find.  The fact that this is cross-gen and plays very well on last gen consoles is pretty amazing, because this is maybe the first game I've played that feels "next gen" to me.  I'm still pretty early on, but unless it completely falls apart, this ranks very highly among the RE games I've played.  It's a different beast than the recent remakes, but it feels just as good, and runs and looks better than they do.

So far each "zone" mixes it up a bit, and each return to the village seems to offer something new.

I'm on the third one right now and its another new puzzle/obstacle. Theyre keeping it pretty fresh.

Agreed.

But the demo really unimpressed me :(

Demo was way too short for me to form a real opinion, I wasn't very impressed either. Kind of hard to be when you're trying to "get through it," they also either foolishly or cleverly, depending on how you feel about the topic, exclude some of the more intense stuff from the full game, which is what starts to get you intrigued into the story.

Yeah, but does it look Exodus amazing?!

Yes, YES IT DOES! :sun: Sure, it doesn't have the scale of Exodus, but its quite pretty in its own right!

Ok fine green man gave me an additional 5% off coupon for it so it was like $47 and that’s impulsey enough to check it out earlier than I planned to!

The color calibration is dick. Also there is some vignette shit i need to use a mod to get rid of.

Yeah that FOV mod I posted can fix that.

Then you use the Rec 709 color space, turn the brightness 2 tics from the top, and min brightness to the bottom and the last brightness setting 2 tics from the top (Something like that. I'll look it up accurately if you actually care)

EDIT: Here's what I'm referencing https://www.resetera.com/threads/resident-evil-village-pc-performance-thread.421793/page-6#post-64507880

Yeah I already messed with it during the demo, it’s the same here, it was just the fucking vignette. It just looks like someone throwing shit at the screen. I can’t believe it doesn’t have an in game option for this, it looks so much better with it off. Turn this off asap anyone with the pc version, if you haven’t already.

There are a couple effects / rooms in the game that turn my framerate to absolute poop. Other than that, looks and runs great. I assume I'm 75 - 80% done now and it's been a treat.

I haven't had any rooms turn my framerate to crap yet, but there was one room so far that made all the fans on my gpu (including the case fan I have hooked into it) run at 90%+. My gpu went from running 50c to 70c for the room.

Spoiler

It was the one where you have to break open the wall to fight one of the daughters. The moment I entered the room things ramped up and didn't stop until I exited the room.
