What I love is Housemarque was always a developer I loved, but this has really helped spread more awareness as to what they're all about.

I say go experimental with Returnal 2: have the player be one of the bosses and sit around at the end while @Joe or I try to get to the end, allowing you endless time to contemplate the fine intricacies of life.

If they come out with a PvP mode for some reason, it's on...I'm gonna fuck you guys up. :dab2:

I'm on the fifth biome now.

So the third was still a big spike in difficulty; I actually got through the first two biomes without dying. And man, I forgot how cool the path to the fourth boss was, especially if you're wearing a headset with 3D audio (Sony Plat headset here). Fantastic boss music, cool concept, hot damn.

This new feature is gonna make me pop in for quick runs even more now, god help me.

I just play another run through with all the fragments and this would’ve been handy, but whatever. I had a good time!I

So I’m going to try and get back into this. First time I got frustrated and rage quit. Any general tips to make my second try go better?

  • Max those weapon perks. Initially, you might think they're small upgrades, but a lot of perks kick a ton of ass and can make formerly OK weapons monsters.
  • Use that ether on that device near your ship. That'll get you some good items that'll pop up each run.
  • I find that moving around gets me hit less than trying to be cautious and stationary. Fortune favors the bold in this game, imo.
  • There's not broad agreement on this, but since we're talking about fortune favoring the bold -- I actually open up many malignant chests/items. A decent amount of time, you don't get infected, and even if you do, I find the benefits can outweigh the risks, plus there are plenty of ways to get rid of the malignancy.
  • That said, I would avoid opening weapon chests in the first world until you've cleared out the map. The reason being that you're at a low level, so the weapons you get will have way fewer perks. If a weapon drops from an enemy, that's different, but as far as chests, clear it out to get as much proficiency as you can, and then start opening chests. Your weapons will have more perks and be stronger overall.

Major update adding the much-requested "Suspend Cycle" soft-save feature and Photo Mode. Also various bug fixes and quality of life improvements but no details on that just yet.

Is it like a self erasing save that you can go back to later, but only once?

The original way was a dumb as shit decision. Don't you dare have things you need to do, or multiple people who use your console!

It's basically the Souls save system but you do it manually. I haven't used it yet myself. So yeah, you save your current state, go back later and if you wanna save again, it overwrites automatically. There are no save files or anything from what I understand, they just incorporated the system suspend thing into the actual game more or less.

What made the absolute biggest difference for me and kept elevating my playstyle was putting more emphasis on constant movement and repositioning. Also absolutely turn on auto-run. There is no reason to ever not run in this game and by always sprinting you can out-maneuver most enemies and their attacks just simply by staying on your toes.

I also remapped the controls early on which I think made it feel much quicker overall:

L1 = Dash

R1 = Interact/Grapple

Auto-Run = On

When you get the grapple, use the shit out of it in combat constantly. There will be grapple points all over the arenas and it grants you major I-frames, you can even grapple through purple beams which are usually impassable.

Don't worry about your accuracy and don't stand still. Only use ADS when you're in a spot where you need to hit a weak spot or when you want to use your secondary fire and it requires precision aiming. Play it like a twin stick arcade shooter, not a TPS.

I second L1 Dash and Auto Run. Both are huge. I was playing Destiny 2 with a friend last week and I kept spamming L1 trying to dash lol.

The default dash being on Circle makes no sense. The reason I remapped it was because I was playing Nex Machina, their previous game, a lot right before Returnal and the dash quite literally feels the same and it's mapped to L1. Also don't really know why auto-run isn't turned on by default, there is no level design or combat scenario where you need precision platforming or anything that doesn't require speed.

I'll try the remapping thing later then. I want to like the game, but I fucking suck at it. I think for me it's the Overload mechanic in a "bullet hell" shooter where I miss it and now Im fucked. Getting better at that will help.

That'll come with practice. I never hit 100% of them or anything but once you get used to your favorite guns, it'll mostly become second nature. But again, it's not that big of a deal to miss the overload if you're moving, moving, moving.

Also dash through projectiles, not away from them, or simply jumb over them and dash mid-air. The only projectiles you can't dash through are noticeably color-coded in purple.

And regarding combat, lean into your melee. It's really strong and will kill the basic grunts in Biome 1 with one hit and many other small grunts as well. Bigger enemies can often be instantly staggered with one melee hit opening them up for serious damage to weak points. Also the melee move is highly magnetic, you don't have to be precise at all. You can even easily do it on flying enemies like the purple bats, the melee will pull you into them even if you're not exactly on them. Also a good tactic if you're down for a sec because of a botched Overload, dash in and melee instead.

I just remembered I had saved a little clip at one point of me no-damage clearing a lockdown room in Biome 1 after Act 3. I'm not saying this is some amazing shit or anything but just to illustrate some of the tips I've been throwing out there:

I haven't even been able to reach the melee unlock yet. Guess I just need to git gud.

It's a really intimidating game until it clicks, I had a hard time with it at first and was too focused on progress in terms of beating a level. Focus more on unlocking weapon perks and learning how to deal with each enemy type and fast movement at first. Also always unlock things at the obelisk you see in the first room you always spawn in, the Cthonos obelisk. You can spend Ether to permanently unlock potential artifact drops

Had my best run so far last night. Got the melee upgrade, was doing pretty good until I picked up an anathema key on a small narrow platform which spawned enemies and I fell off the sides a couple times trying to dash around. So that was annoying because I was doing good in normal combat rooms. Oh well, onto to the next breakthrough run hopefully.

Now that you have melee at your disposal, get in there and get aggressive. The regular blue grunts and purple bats in Biome 1 are one-shot kills with melee.

I have found that being aggressive has helped. Just empty those clips and hope you get the reload right, but it's not a huge deal if you don't. Before I was being too passive and only firing a few shots because I didn't want to deal with a failed reload. But now I'm just holding down the trigger until shit stops moving and shit is stopping moving faster this way.

If you wanna be careful with the reload, stop firing shortly before you run empty and focus on evasion for a few seconds. Your ammo will fill up automatically again. Sometimes that's an option if you're in too tight of a situation and risk the downtime of the Overload fail. Game is ALL about being aggressive.

Had my second breakthrough run last night. Got to the first boss. Things were going well until I realized the fucker had 4 mother fucking health bars. The first boss of the game has 4 motherfucking health bars. Fuck this game. First form was pretty easy but next form killed me. Get to the boss room and they don't give you a health drop near it or anything. I get the game is supposed to be hard but they can give a little bit of a break. I guess the only good thing is I think the boss room is just unlocked now and I can go straight for it next time? It does seem the game has some sort of checkpoints you can reach where you keep your level progress instead of having to start completely over, so that's at least nice.

Phrike is such a joke. Once you get good and come back to him, you’ll wonder how you ever died versus him. Biggest thing is to stay back and to make sure you have the timing down for the melee strike he gives you. I was dodging too early for a while and that attack is devastating. However, once you get the timing down, he should not ever land the melee strike.

I think he has an AoE attack that was fucking me up before I ended up shelving the game…Still going to go back and keep playing but I seem to recall that’s what was pissing me off.

If that’s the one where he just drops a ton of those bullets/orbs, the key is just staying far back. The farther back you stay the easier they are to manage.

This update also adds The Tower of Sisyphus – accessible as long as you've unlocked the Icarian Grapnel.* It's an ascending gauntlet of increasingly dangerous phases, with each containing twenty floors. Upon entry, eliminate all the enemies on each floor and secure your passage to the next one up. Just be ready for what you might encounter within…
