The comedian Jerry Stiller has died at the age of 92. His death was announced on Monday on Twitter by the actor Ben Stiller, who called him “a great dad and grandfather, and the most dedicated husband”.

Jerry Stiller enjoyed a long career on stage and screen, often accompanied by his wife, Anne Meara, with whom he formed a popular comedy act. They met in 1953, married the following year and regularly teamed up for improv sketches, performing in Las Vegas nightclubs and on The Ed Sullivan Show and other TV programmes, often in character as the squabbling spouses Mary Elizabeth Doyle and Hershey Horowitz, playing upon their Irish Catholic and Jewish cultures. In 2010, they took their act online, performing from the front room of their New York apartment. Meara died in 2015.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Granted though, Jerry Stiller has been 'the old funny guy' for like four decades now. And boy was he good at it. Mr. Costanza was an amazing character.

The last time I watched Seinfeld was either last year or 2018, and I know I wondered then who would be the next "parent" to go. Mr. Seinfeld went a long while ago, but Mrs. Seinfeld and Mr. and Mrs. Costanza were getting up there.

I feel like the original dads for Jerry and George went a long time ago.

Jerry's dad was fantastic too, or his parents in general.

I know we once saw Elaine's dad right? Did we ever get to see Kramer's parents?

We saw Elaine's dad, and he was never shown again because the actor behind him was a kook behind the scenes. This is from Wiki, the source being the DVDs:

"The Seinfeld cast recalls that he was difficult and scary to work with, specifically recalling a moment when he attempted to steal a real knife from the kitchen set in Jerry's apartment. He could have been a recurring character, but they were afraid to have him back."

We saw Kramer's mom.

Jerry's parents I think were underrated just because the Costanzas light up the screen, but fuck, they were hilarious too. I loved how the set of parents didn't like the other.

Yup, that was Lawrence Tierney who also plays the mob boss in Reservoir Dogs. He apparently was a mean, nasty fuck in real life too.

How the hell did I miss Kramer's mom...I thought I've seen every episode five times at least by now.

I love when the sets of parents bicker, it's so good.

Stiller had trouble remembering his lines, but the Seinfeld cast and crew developed patience with him because of how spectacular his performances were. In fact, what look like Frank’s angry gestures are often Stiller’s gestures of frustration with his inability to remember his lines. Everything about him looked pained, a perfect expression of Frank Costanza.

The bit where Steinbrenner comes over to explain that he thinks George is dead and Frank just sits there stewing until he blurts out "What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for?!" makes me laugh every time I think about it. And then the voice mail in the next scene. "Steinbrenner's here, George is dead, call me back!"

Incredible.

I love just how much they doubled down on how horrible they all are in later seasons. One of the few shows that just got funnier to me. This moment is gold, Jerry.
