Then they have fucked up the marketing for this. I mean, I'm not necessarily against changes, but they've made this look like it was going to be FF7 with fancy graphics and "updated" combat. If it was going to be different, they could have presented that in some way.

No see RE3RE is good in gameplay and everything else (an actual good game nothing "wtf" about it") and FFVII is incorporating bad gameplay and bad story and everything else from FFXIII (including WTF level remake)

I'm really curious to know what this spoiler is. You all have me intrigued. I hadn't never played the original, but I do know about the major plot point from it that saddened everyone back in '97, and I already watched the launch trailer and didn't notice any major changes because I probably wouldn't recognize them.

Actually to be honest if we go by the original I would say it's not very "anime" it's a futuristic setting (not that that's not anime but in this case it's not that anime) you play as some rebels taking down a corporation. I'd say it's probably mostly a compelling story.

I'd say maybe chocobos are anime to you, or moogles or something. I dunno. They even tuned down Tifas boobs so that is less anime.

 

But these changes might ramp up the anime. Who knows? You're getting it!

I expect it to be more anime-feeling just from the voice acting and camera cuts.  Text bubbles don’t always read that way.  They’ll try to rewrite some of it read better spoken... which could be a problem for the translators.

 

The original game does have character though.  The main cast and certain scenes are iconic for good reason.

If you have never played the original and Aeris dying is your only real knowledge of the plot, watching the new trailer would essentially mean nothing to you lol. Maybe one part would seem weird, but even then it's not clear. 

 

I've probably played FF7...I dunno, 5-6 times through. It took me 2-3 and the explosion of the internet to REALLY understand the plot of the game, and I think if people watched that trailer with casual knowledge of the game, even if they beat it back in the day, they probably wouldn't come up with a fraction of the stuff in the OP.

I'm in that boat, even having beaten it a few times back in the day.  I did fully understand the details of it at some point, but I've played plenty of other large-scale JRPGs since that have kind of supplanted its headspace in my brain.  (Xenoblade 1 & 2 stand out in recent memory)

I dunno... most of the main FF games are pretty convoluted. You’re right though not KH levels, but at least my young teenage self usually had no clue what actually happened by the end of most FF games.

Haven't read the spoilers.   I'd hope that being a "remake" is somewhat a safeguard against that.

But FF7 was pretty convoluted plot-wise compared to other JRPGs at the time.  So it might actually fit?  lol
