I mean, I'm near the end of playing it. It's . . . nothing like the experience I had with Dark Souls, which I played way after it came out. The level design simply doesn't compare, especially the questlines.

I'm not talking about level  design.

The Souls-ing is getting so out of control that this now looks like a 3D version of Blasphemous which was a 2D version of 3D Souls.

The bigger concern to me is that this entire thing looks like some sort of vertical slice or tech demo or whatever the term would be, I'm not sure. None of this looks like someone actually playing the game with a controller in hand. I don't get what the level design etc. is supposed to be at all from this either, it just seems like these random disjointed 'arenas'? That's part of what made this look like just some sort of concept thing.

You can try to get into the PC beta that's running from July 3 to July 10 :p

I'm thoroughly surprised at how bad this look in game.  Like, I almost think a 30fps trailer could do it better, because it might cover a bit for the animations. :o  Hits just don't seem to have weight and heft, think it might be in the reactions perhaps.

Plus, whose idea was to show it in that water environment?

Every animation is exaggeratedly long in a way people used to pretend Dark Souls was. There's soooo much windup and so little result, although the player character seems to get knocked on his ass pretty easy so it comes off as doubly bizarre.

The presentation is very nice, which I imagine is what a lot of people will pay attention to, but the combat in that video had me annoyed just looking at it. It's like you're playing in slow motion or something.

I hope it's great because combat aside it really looks neat, but every time I see more of the combat I have less faith in it being a good game.

Combat looks like what the change from DS1 to DS2 was only this time it's DS2 to Mortal Shell. No bueno hermano. It's like they made your character a slow, encumbered, Zweihander-wielding sloth as default and none of the enemies actually react to a 200 lbs piece of steel smashing them.

By the way, enemies not responding to your ridiculously huge weapon with clearly powerful swings was something I absolutely loathed about Final Fantasy 7 Remake's combat, but at least that was generally fast as those characters are basically superhuman. This is like that but way slower.

There's something else going on here. I watched the gameplay video again and it feels like the audio is delayed ever so slightly, or something similar, to where the combat audio feels disconnected from the actual action on screen. That's on top of the dog shit hit reactions and lame combat.

The audio was definitely out of sync for some reason and I thought to myself maybe that's what people were subconsciously reacting to. The combat looked about on par to me as any other Souls or souls like game to be honest

Audio definitely makes or breaks action in general so with that properly 'aligned', it'll probably feel much tighter.

IGN Preview details a lot of the games unique mechanics. Beta drops on the 3rd (tomorrow :o

I'm really looking forward to this game. Highlights:

  • No block button, you defend by "hardening" yourself, dodging or parrying
  • Very limited Health items
  • You have to try items first in order to discover their effects
  • Combat felt smooth, and weighty.
  • Game crashed several times during this playthrough (early build)
