Mortal Shell - Information Thread, update: "The Virtuous Cycle" DLC free until August 23

Died 3 times on the end boss the first time. One of the times was fucking BS tho cuz I was trying to get back into the shell but the boss was literally body blocking from all angles. Second time I I didn't even take damage. I don't want to say no hit cuz, I mean, you technically are getting hit when you harden. First time I fought it as the Rogue, then the second time as the Knight. The Knight is really OP for the boss if you have full resolve. Nearly 3-hit the boss because I used the empowered strike twice with the Sword. I never use the hammer much, and haven't against the boss.

I basically played it like Dark Souls and it actually worked really well once I got use to the funky timing and movement this game had. The game is actually pretty OK. If the game is at least 6 hours for 30 then that isn't really that bad IMO, but it really isn't great either. The gameplay feels better that what the trailer showed. I feel like the enemies are actually reacting to the hits, unlike in the trailer. Gameplay also seems way faster than in the trailers. What I don't get tho is like the weird pauses my guy sometimes does. Like, he will do the first attack in the combo, pause, and then does the rest of the combo. Really fucks up the flow.

Now, I can't say I am a fan of the Shells and whatnot, especially how they are handled. I really don't like how you have to pick a load-out from the crypt. As in you pick a shell and weapon and then you are nearly stuck with that. It feels very restrictive and that is probably the point, but I dislike it. Now, you can use an item to swap shells, but boy does it suck that you lose nearly all of your HP. Maybe it would make it too easy, but it would be a lot more fun if you could swap and have at least 50% of that shells HP. The game also really needs an Estus or something. Like, in the demo just having two charges of Estus would make every other healing item invalid. The way it is done how is very tedious and it feels like the devs are trying to slow you down so you don't beat the game too fast. I mean, the healing items in the demo don't really even work when fighting the boss unless you run like a bitch for a literal fucking minute. Like, I get that this next thing is the devs intention, but using poison to heal is shit. Like, the poison no longer hurts you, and the ticks are faster than the normal mushroom, I think, but it still sucks. Like, it is kinda neat that with the Rogue shell you can use the poison mushrooms and normal ones to heal. Or well if would have been except after like 2-3 uses you become familiar with the item and it gives you two minutes of poison protection which makes the Rogue poison heal useless if you accidentally use it.

Parrying feels bad, IMO and it is very odd that you can't riposte unless you have a charge of resolve. The familiarity system seems neat as an idea, but it is very underwhelming, at least based off of the demo. Loading seems too long. Like, it loads with an item description, and then it loads to a blank screen, and then it loads to an item description again before finally allowing you to play. The Souls games load nearly instantly for me.

A lot of people are calling for an Estus system for the healing. @Bacon did you experience and crashes or any other bugs? I've had the game lock up on me a couple of times so far and I've gotten some weird audio glitches. I'm on my laptop with HDMI output to my TV though so that might be the issue.

BRO, I was HELLA fuckin mad when my game crashed. I don't mind it usually, but it crashed so hard I could not even close the game. I was fucking stuck on the blank loading screen. There was literally ZERO ways to close the program. My monitor, no matter what, would just show that black screen. I brought up task manager, but because it and the game were on the same monitor I could not even access it as the black screen was always on top even tough the TM was set to always be the program on top. There was no other option but to restart the whole PC.

I can't recall any audio glitches except for a single audio stutter. It was just a quiet "ch".

There were plenty of enemy+terrain issues. As in, enemies would kinda float, and not stay grounded. Best way to see what I mean is to exit from the crypt by that locked chest. It takes a few seconds but one of the pole weapon enemies will spawn, and it does not handle that sloped terrain well at all. I have also gotten a bit of air time from rolling up slopes at weird angles but it never broke the game.

Yup... same thing just happened to me for the second time exactly like this. Task manager doesn't work and I too hard to restart the whole PC. I'll report it in their discord.

Since we're now all on the fabled list of super qualified folks who have played the game, I gotta say: Well, at least it's pretty to look at.

Yeah, I thought more than once, it would be cool if from used UE4! :daydream:

I've become so outrageously lazy that I ended up not checking this Beta out simply because I didn't want to have to download this EGS shit and delete it later.

It's a timed EGS exclusive so unless you wait for steam you won't be playing it till next year. :p

I don't get it either... the only people I've seen that have major issues with the combat are in THIS thread. Not surprising to be honest. Anybody know what the vibe on Resetera is?

I mean, you can read the feedback on their discord see there are complaints of all kinds along with praise. But, at the very least, this demo is better than DS2.

DAMN you HATE DS 2

Sure there are critiques  but they are generally positive and folks are looking forward to the finished game.

I don't understand this analogy but people seem to be enjoying the combat loop.

DS2 is the only one I skipped. Kinda helps that it looked like straight up poo at launch.

DS2 is the only game I've ever done a midnight Day 1 thing for and all that hoopla. I even took off the day after. The sequel to my favorite game of all time, my god was I excited.

Let's say it did not work out well. I've never been so baffled by a video game before.

You'd have to play it to really understand how...off...everything feels. It's not just the obviously botched things but there was something very eccentric and off-kilter in a unique way about Demon's and Dark that attracted me so much to those. It's just nonexistent here and it has an entirely different vibe overall. I'm sure it's perfectly playable if you didn't borderline worship Demon's and Dark Souls like I did but yeah, it's still the most disappointing mess of a sequel I've ever played.

I really want a Souls knock-off like this that incorporates enemy dismemberment and gorier combat, that'd be cool. Kind of like Blasphemous but in 3D.

It would fit so well in this game.

Give me a console demo!!!

I heard there wasn't a console demo because the certification process for consoles is so involved and this game only has a 15 person team.

I would've loved to have seen it in Bloodborne considering you have weapons like a saw cleaver and other really crazy shit. But then Sekiro was just begging for it, it's a samurai flick staple basically to at least lop off an arm here and there.

Quickly checking out that Beta video posted up there somehow drove this home again.

Does Tsushima have dismemberment? Do we know? The Shadow of Mordor games did.

Last time I tried to tell you anything about that game it was all entirely false, I'm not saying anything haha

Edit!!!!!:

"Indeed, it seems as though Ghost of Tsushima will feature a lot of gory violence -- perhaps in honour of the many blood-spraying samurai movies that inspired it. The ESRB description reads: "Some attacks result in dismemberment and/or decapitation of enemy soldiers, often accompanied by large blood-splatter effects"
