JFC...the next stimulus might include a $4,000 travel voucher to stimulate the tourism sector, if the White House gets their way.

Yes, encourage people to travel around the country and spread the virus.

I haven't been following this news closely, but they're maybe thinking about doing another $1,200 stimulus with possibly more strings attached this time....but they want 4,000 in a fucking vacation subsidy?!

I understand why it might be important to prop up the tourism business, but even without the dangers of travel giving three times as much away on subsidizing a trip to Disney World as you are giving to people who badly need money for food, rent, and utilities is so out of tune with reality that....well....I guess that's exactly what you'd expect in Trump's America.

And it's even stupider because it's 50% of travel costs up to a maximum refund of $4,000, and you have to wait to get it on your tax return. So it's not even going to stimulate lower-income people to travel because in order to claim the $4,000 you still have to be able to both front $8,000 and then be able to afford to wait for the $4,000.

https://www.cdcgamingreports.com/harrahs-reno-permanently-laying-off-471-workers-property-to-close/

Quote

Caesars Entertainment notified the state, city of Reno and Washoe County that it will permanently lay off 471 employees at its Harrah’s Reno property, which remains closed after the state-mandated shutdown of nonessential businesses in March. Caesars is in the midst of closing its sale of Harrah’s Reno to Las Vegas-based developer CAI Investments.

This was going to happen before the shutdown but still sad to see so many jobs lost. Even after it eventually reopens it won't be a casino so those jobs won't be returning.

Once the project is finished, the remodeled building will feature about 530 market-rate apartments, 150,000 square feet of new office space and 78,500 square feet of retail. Retail offerings will include food options such as restaurants, a bar, coffee shop and grocery store. Reno City Center will also have a gym as well as entertainment set in a park-like setting, according to CAI. Plans also factor in the east tower but remain fluid, CAI told the Reno Gazette Journal.

One thing the reimagined Harrah’s Reno site will not have is gambling. Reno City Center is planned to be a strictly non-gaming facility.

Probably will be overpriced apartments.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2020/06/18/unemployment-claims-coronavirus/

Quote

An additional 1.5 million workers filed for unemployment insurance for the first time last week, a marginal drop of just 58,000 claims from the week before, despite reopening efforts nationwide.

Since the coronavirus pandemic began earlier this year, there have been 13 straight weeks where more than 1 million people have filed for unemployment for the first time. The previous record before the pandemic was in 1982.

The numbers come as the country’s reopening is in nearly full swing in many states. Yet the economic outlook is complicated by continuing coronavirus outbreaks across the country. Twenty-one states are seeing an increase in their daily average of new coronavirus cases this week compared to last week, according to data compiled by The Washington Post. New infections nationwide also surged.

The total number of people receiving benefits edged down slightly, to 20.5 million; more than 45 million people have filed for unemployment at some point during the pandemic.

About 9.2 million people are also receiving unemployment from a new supplemental benefit available to self-employed and gig workers, bringing the total number receiving benefits to about 29 million.

I just closed a deal to acquire a big chunk of land just east of downtown Houston, less than 5 minutes from Minute Maid Park (Astros) and Toyota Center (Rockets). The ground lease is exactly zero dollars for 5 years. It’s basically just a piece of marketing for the overall development they are trying to do with the 150ish acres they have which used to be KBR’s corporate headquarters.

We will be building a drive in there. Much excite.

What a great time for Trump to threaten new aluminum tariffs on Canada...for some reason?

IIRC the last time Trump started this shit with Canada, your government agreed to a 10% increase in milk imports in exchange for Trump giving away literally everything else being asked for by your side. I wonder what Trump winds up giving away everything else for this time? Maybe some corn or soy exports?

People went back to work after the shutdown, but millions also lost their job on a permanent basis per the bls report

It effects even people who didn't lose their jobs. My wife may file soon, herself. She's a mental healthcare worker. She was never out of work. However, as things locked down she did more work with patients over video chat. Problem is that so many people have lost their jobs her hours have been cut to basically nothing since so many of her patients are now without insurance.

There is Mass Health for a public option in Massachusetts that most of these people should qualify for, but many are still choosing to forgo help for fear of getting hit with a bill they can't afford right now. That fear is there even if Mass Health tells them they're covered.

Yep. I ended up bailing on my retail job. The risks to my family just weren't worth it. Especially with the mouth breathing morons in GA refusing to use masks.

Makes sense considering you get left on the hook for the bill no matter what you were told, sent in writing, etc if it turns out they were wrong/lied.

This is pretty neat. I got to work directly with Amazon on putting this together on the drive in end of things, helping to craft our piece of the program. One cool thing is that Amazon is going to buy a bunch of concession items from businesses owned by POC to send out to the drive ins. The movies and concession will be free to the guests.

TBH, I would probably be dumb enough to go to Disney World if Papa Trump wanted to pay me back to go.

My wife just told me Disney World reopens in July. My dumb ass is gonna do it.
