It's the military, so suddenly deficits don't matter

I wouldn't mind this if Biden used the Trump policy of reallocating military funds for emergency items...like climate change. I mention that because I swear I recall Biden talking about doing just that.

The only reason we have such a large military is to support empire. We need to close down bases all around the world.

Counter-point: exploit American military fetishism and forgiveness to backdoor in a greatly expanded socialist state.

"defense."

The unfortunate reality is that the military industrial complex has become an integral part of our economy. We could break away from it, but it would be ugly, and a lot of people would lose their jobs. I'm not saying it shouldn't happen at all, and I would absolutely be for military budget cuts being put directly into unemployment benefits gradually for years, but it's important to note that all that military spending doesn't ALL go into corrupt government contractors. (A lot of it does)

RAISING the military budget is inexcusable to me. Lowering it is good, but it depends on how it's used, with the ultimate goal of just not spending as much, however far away that might be.

I have mentioned it here before but part of the December Covid relief package was something called the Shuttered Venue Operator Grant. It is a 16 billion dollar fund for live performance venues, movie theaters, and museums who were amongst the hardest hit industries during the pandemic.

The grant program is being administered by the SBA, and into March they still had no application or even a timeline for when it would become available. About two weeks ago they announced the applications would begin to be accepted through a portal at SBA.gov on April 8th.

April 8th rolls around, the portal is open and...it doesn’t work at all 😬 They took the link down and have now said they don’t yet have a date for when it will open back up but that they didn’t get a single application through during the brief time it was open. A real kick in the junk for a lot of venues that need the grant if they are going to come back.

Hopefully they get it sorted out over the weekend.

@sblfilms some impressive cinematic real estate up if you're hungry

Fuck, there's an ArcLight in Santa Monica that's been my go-to, it's a great theater. Their Widescreen format was a good IMAX substitute, coming from being used to having the Lincoln Square IMAX in NYC.

This makes me sad. Arc light is a real throw back to showmanship. They have a staff member introduce every screening for example.
