I have little doubt that the are more than a few House members who are furious.

It's ok the senate will pass their bill, then negotiations will go on until the night of march 13, when the UI extension runs out and then some arm twisting plus guilt shaming over not letting UI run out and the dog shit Senate Bill will be passed in the house for biden to sign

The Senate has outlived its usefulness and should be abolished entirely. The House should expanded by 10x and the term limit changed to 4 years (to coincide with the Presidential election). The Senate only exists to give power to nobles in small states...and it doesn't even do that anymore since Senators clearly are more closely tied to ideology and class than to their state. With Machin, you have the people of his state and the Republican government of his state calling for something, and he stands against it.

Ah yes, the way a country is supposed to be governed: The chamber of the people wants something and the chamber of the gentry/noble class (senate) doesn't. The compromise? The gentry get their way or the nation crumbles.

But what is important is that the byrd rule remains

Easy to say if you're not one of the 11.8 millions of Americans whose reaction to this is going to boil down to the fact that they just got shafted by Biden on a major campaign promise.

Like seriously, most people are not going to sit around listening to wonky reasons everything is still awesome, they're just going to know that the Democrats didn't give them what they promised to get their vote.

There will be people who received two checks under Trump who receive nothing under Biden.

The sooner Democrats stop making excuses for moderate Dems, the better.

Yup.

During the campaign for the two Georgia Senate races, Joe Biden repeatedly promised to pass $2,000 stimulus checks if the Democrats won. After they did, the administration argued that $2,000 really meant $1,400 in addition to the $600 that had already gone out in the December rescue package.

Whether that is true or not, now Biden is inarguably breaking his promise. Under pressure from moderate Senate Democrats, he has reportedly agreed to cut down the formula under which the checks will be sent out. In the previous packages, the amount started phasing out at $75,000 in income for individuals and $150,000 for joint filers, and vanished entirely at $100,000 and $200,000 respectively (as of 2019). Now the phase-out will start start in the same place but end at $80,000 for singles and $160,000 for couples.

The $1,400 promise clearly implied at least that the checks would go out according to the previous formula used under Trump. But now singles making between $80,000-100,000 and couples making between $160,000-200,000 will get nothing. The Washington Post's Jeff Stein reports that roughly 17 million people who previously got checks now will not.

Unsurprisingly, progressive Democrats are not pleased about this (just check any Hill reporter’s mentions right now). And politically, it very much does feel like Democrats are cutting off their nose to spite their face here, given that they made a new round of relief checks a centerpiece of the Georgia runoff campaigns that won them the Senate. It’s probably not the end of the world if a family that earns $170,000 doesn’t get a little extra help from the government this time. And in the end, ITEP says that 86 percent of Americans are still set to benefit from a check, versus 91 percent under the previous version. **But that’s still several million voters who could feel let down. To be clear: Some upper-middle-class voters who got a check from Donald J. Trump will absolutely not get a check from Joseph R. Biden, and I cannot possibly imagine that will help cement the Democrats’ new suburban Sun Belt coalition come 2022.**

The problem is essentially that, because the check amounts phase down so quickly, the payments now effectively create an insanely punitive marginal tax rate on a very narrow band of Americans. As Ritz noted to me, a single taxpayer who earned $80,000 last year is going to be hit with a 70 percent tax on their last $5,000 of income, which means some people are going to realize they were working extra hours for basically nothing. Already, complaints about that are popping up:

The problem is the framing "The democrats" when the actual headline should say Joe Manchin.

The headlines can say whatever the fuck they want, most voters are just going to know the Democrats didn't deliver.

Agreed 100%. I’m upset about this too, but leftist Twitter really wants this to be the end of the Democratic Party. It’s just too fucking much.

Yeah it's dumb, but not destructively so. The real help was never the checks; it was paycheck protection, unemployment, child tax credit, and a few other things.

Again, dumb, but the fact that vocal lefties are focusing on this one thing is telling for how much of the assistance they were waiting for.

Considering how we begged the Obama administration for eight years to stop pre-negotiating I wouldn't have expected this reaction. Biden clearly asked for the moon in his relief bill and is getting 97% of it but here that missing 3% is the end of the fuckng world. Isn't it exhausting never being happy about anything?

"Wow I can't believe they're phasing checks out for individuals making over 80k instead of 100k!" -said nobody on unemployment
