Replaying GOW.

I had to give up on SFV and the whole online fighting thing. I usually might curse at the TV at my absolute worst Souls rage or so but this whole thing has brought me to the brink of firing my controller into the ground. Realizing that that the next absurdly crushing defeat I might just do it, I instead deleted the game and have felt much better since!

I'm about 2/3rds of the way through the AC7 campaign.

The story is complete nonsense -- I can follow what is happening.  It just makes no sense.

Spoiler

Having a teenage girl making fighter jets out of spare parts, then using prisoners as jet pilots is just strange.  They never really explained about how a "fake" military airport was useful -- and if the "landing strip" was just painted on -- how are the player's jets using it?  Our team was banned by our leadership from using weapons -- but why did they send us up with a full arsenal of missiles to us?.  I then rolled my eyes, when the "real pilots" wouldn't communicate over the radio to us -- like they were the "cool kids" in high school.  And the soliloquy's in the cutscenes felt like they were straight out of a bad 80s anime.

The only good part, is that the cut scenes have become mercifully much shorter mid-game.

After the first few missions, I thought it would play much like a previous AC game -- and it does.  HOWEVER, every mission so far has had a new "gimmick" -- that is a one off for the level.  While some are interesting, I actively dislike some of them.  (i.e. land targets dropping off radar due to a sandstorm, the obligatory escort mission -- except the SAMs don't show up on radar, you need to find them via their smoke trails, a mission where you have to "guide bombs" into targets, etc.)

The airplane tree also looks like it is designed for grinding, and I believe that in order to "open it up" you need to play through the single player missions multiple times or get heavily into the multiplayer.  So, during my first playthrough, I kind of get stuck playing one jet for a lot of the game.

I plan on finishing the campaign (just cause), but not sure I could recommend Ace Combat to anyone else.

The overrated/overhyped games thread got me wanting to revisit The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. I couldn't find my old copy (I think I sold nearly all of my Wii games ages ago, despite holding onto both my Wii and Wii U :silly:) but I was able to get a copy on ebay for about $8. I would have gone for either the Wii U or GC edition, but they were a lot more. I don't know if I'm going to waggle my way through this whole game again, but it's interesting to revisit now, with OoT 3DS fresh in my mind.

Started Hat in Time.

The game controls so great, has plenty of charm.  But the first level is a garish, cluttered mess.  Some pick-ups have giant rainbow-colored indicators just to stand out among all the tight corridors and litter.  There's interactables everywhere you don't have the ability to use (ice panels, floating hooks), but it seems like you can cheese most of them.

I get a Sonic Adventure 2 Knuckles vibe from it, at worst.  Fun enough, but feels slapdash in its layout.  Really hope it gets better.
