So now that it's hitting republicans, and pretty much entirely republicans, the far right talking heads suddenly are starting to give a shit.  You wonder how many viewers he's losing a week from covid.

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey says that unlike last year, games will not be postponed over COVID concerns. Six of the conference's 14 football teams have reached an 80% vaccination mark.

The SEC was a mistake

I mean last year was worse and no fucks were given when they played.

It's incredibly hard to feel sorry for the people clearly falling for this propaganda when them falling for this particular propaganda helps advance (by virtue of disproportionately lessening ballot box support of the opposition) political causes that I support which would directly help millions more instead.

lolol Ontario is going to pass a bill that will result in lower pay for nurses (wow, what a coincidence that Alberta's conservative government is also trying to lower healthcare wages after the worst pandemic of our lifetimes...)

When asked how he could be lowering the pay of nurses after the pandemic, the premier said:

Excess deaths in India between January 2020 and June 2021 are estimated at between 3.7 million and 4 million, ten times the "official" amount of COVID deaths reported by its right-wing Hindu supremacist regime:

Things got pretty heated between Fauci and Rand Paul during a Senate hearing:

Quote

He said the study Paul was referring to does not constitute gain-of-function research. “Senator Paul, you do not know what you are talking about, quite frankly, and I would like to say that officially. You do not know what you are talking about,” Fauci said.

Paul countered: “No one is saying those viruses caused the pandemic. What we’re alleging is that gain of function research was done in that lab and NIH funded it. You can’t get away from it, it meets your definition and you are obfuscating the truth.”

As the two men talked over one another, Fauci interjected that Paul was the one who was obfuscating the truth.

“You are implying that what we did resulted in the deaths of individuals,” Fauci responded as he pointed his finger at Paul. “I totally resent that, and If anyone is lying here senator, it is you.”

A comment like that deserves a public stabbing and slashing with scalpels.

Bill 124 is not new -- it was passed 2 years ago.  It caps public service raises at 1% P.A. for a period of 3 years.  The nurses are asking to be exempted from that, and get higher wage increases this year.

There is no plan in existence that gets the majority of the planet vaccinated before the end of 2023.

Most epidemiologists are anticipating that before that time, a break-through variant will occur that will bypass of the immunity of the present vaccines.  This is one of the reasons that mRNA vaccines are so groundbreaking.  The vaccines can be adapted to protect from new spike proteins in a few days -- rather than in months or years.

We will need boosters every 1-2 years, likely for the foreseeable future.  We may need to lock-down again waiting for booster shots that protect us from the break-through variant.

None of this is really new thinking.

For the first time since Oct 2, my city has 0 new reported cases of COVID-19. Over the last 7 days our average for new daily cases is 3/day. Population of 275,000, for reference. Provincial stats for today, things are looking pretty good:

Overall my province has the almost-worst vaccine uptake in Canada (only 64% total pop with first dose, 51% with second), but we seem to be averaging around 25 new cases per day (total pop 1.1 million), and over 80% of new cases are unvaxxed, with another 18% being single-dosed.

A comprehensive effort to estimate excess deaths in the country during the pandemic produced figures 10 times the government’s official coronavirus toll.

Yikes.

Quote

The number of people who have died in the coronavirus pandemic in India so far is likely to exceed three million — nearly 10 times the official Covid-19 death toll — making it one of the worst human tragedies in the nation’s history, according to a new study.

Quote

In a comprehensive examination of the true toll of the pandemic in the sprawling nation of 1.4 billion, the Center for Global Development, a Washington research institute, attempted to quantify excess deaths from all causes during the pandemic based on state data, international estimates, serological studies and household surveys.

Quote

“True deaths are likely to be in the several millions, not hundreds of thousands, making this arguably India’s worst human tragedy,” said its authors, one of whom is a former chief economic adviser to the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

I am not sure how to treat the vaccination data...

Ontario claims that 96.5% of people 80+ have 1 dose.  BUT, Toronto claims to only have have 75.9% of their 80+ partially vaccinated.  And Peel claims to only have 73.9% of their 80+ partially vaccinated.  They all show that ~80% of eligible population is partially vaccinated....  But it is impossible for Ontario's numbers to be that high for 80+, and the two biggest PHU to have numbers that low.  [The 18-24 numbers don't make sense in the opposite direction...]

Pretty much all the smart people I’ve been reading have said the wealthy nations are transitioning into living with Covid in the same way we live with the Flu. That seems right. But we still need to keep trying to get more people vaccinated as that is part of how we mitigate the overall effects of the virus in our communities.

It is also why I’ve been posting about some of the cool treatments that will be coming on market in Q4. These will be needed both in the developing world where vaccination is way behind the rich countries, but also in rich countries for those who ended up infected including vaccinated people. We will be in a significantly stronger position this winter with both the high numbers of people with immune system protection and much better therapeutics.
