Don't get used to it. American Airlines, which has been blocking half the middle seats in economy since April in the name of social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic, on Friday said it will end the practice on July 1.

"As more people continue to travel, customers may notice that flights are booked to capacity starting July 1,'' the airline said in a statement. "American will continue to notify customers and allow them to move to more open flights when available, all without incurring any cost.''

American isn't the first airline to do so. United and Spirit airlines are among the airline's already booking flights to capacity. United CEO Scott Kirby has said there's no such thing as social distancing on a plane.

Southwest, Delta and JetBlue are still blocking middle seats or restricting the number of seats for sale on each flight. Southwest has committed to doing it through Sept. 30, for example.

Florida records nearly 9000 cases, around a 4000 case jump from yesterday.

If there's any silver lining, it's that the percent positive didn't jump the same amount, so much of the jump can actually be attributed to increased testing for once.

The trend in percent positive is still going in the wrong direction.

13% seems extremely high.

What's a "good" baseline?

The things I’ve been reading is under 10% is OK, under 5% is actually good, and under 2% is great

This new EO from Governor Abbott is a mess to read. Very imprecise language. Good job, Governor Business, leaving a LOT of businesses unable to know whether they are going to be operating in violation of the order!

Man, I forgot how every time Fauci speaks it's a direct (whether intentionally or unintentionally) repudiation of everything Donald Trump says about COVID.

Surprised he has a job still TBH.

Also I am WFH until Sept 30th.

Trump by his nature is a black hole that sucks in all the media attention, but Pence really deserves to get a lot more shit than he has. He's been traveling around at least as much as Trump has and hasn't been using masks or social distancing whatsoever. There was a photo of him eating in a crowded restaurant a couple of weeks ago.

I do think Republicans like the cover Trump provides.

Does anyone know if there are any reports out concerning number of hospitalizations?

That seems to be perhaps the most consequential statistic in terms of what the shutdowns were/are designed to prevent.  I'd be interested to see how much the uptick is straining the Florida health system. (in terms of beds, supplies, etc.)

From the Sun-Sentinel:

Quote

As of Tuesday June 23, 1,629 patients with COVID-19 were being treated at South Florida hospitals, compared with 1,112 on June 1. About 75% of the adult ICU beds are full, and ventilator use is going back up after a small decline.

The Texas Medical Center, a collection of Hospitals in the heart of Houston, hit capacity on normal ICU beds in the last 24 hours. Approximately 25% of those are Covid patients. The surge capacity for ICU beds in the Med Center is more than double that, but the region was on pace to run out of space in something like 12 days.

It’s funny watching all the Republicans from PA try and crucify Governor Wolf over everything he's been doing.

Meanwhile, we’re in the green phase outside of ONE county that’s in yellow.

Lebanon County is still in yellow because they deliberately disobeyed the stay-at-home order and opened up early.  Wolf is delaying them moving into the green phase because of this.  But now, most of Lebanon county is planning to disregard that too.

It's like they got caught with their hand in the cookie jar, and think the best course of action is to continue eating the cookies.

That said, after weeks of the number of cases steadily going down in PA, the number has kinda flatlined and remained steady this week.  I'm hoping yo chalk that up as a temporary but expected hiccup as the most populated counties in the state move into green.  Today was the day that all but one is in green now, so only time will tell.  The next two weeks will be very important to watch...

The COVID Tracking Project is amazing, obviously, and has been my go to resource during this outbreak. I hope the media learns to follow their lead and starts to report on positive rate and not just raw cases. Positive rate and hospitalizations are what is important to look at right now.
